Risk assessment is a field of scientific research dedicated to identifying hazards, understanding their levels in the environment or human body, and defining and measuring risk, with experts calculating the likelihood of an event resulting in a specific consequence and estimation of risk at the levels known to exist. For environmental health risk, researchers combine information about the toxicity of a substance with the amount of exposure a population has to the substance in order to calculate what is likely to happen.

oxic air pollutants are poisonous substances in the air that come from natural sources (for example, radon gas coming up from the ground) or from manmade sources (for example, chemical compounds given off by factory smokestacks) and can harm the environment or your health. Inhaling (or breathing) toxic air pollutants can increase your chances of experiencing health problems. For example, inhaling the benzene fumes that are given off when you pump gas into your car can increase your chances of experiencing health effects that have been associated with exposure to benzene, such as leukemia.

The U.S. National Research Council issued a pioneering report in 1983, titled Risk Assessment in the Federal Government: Managing the Process.
