Narcissistic personality disorder/ Encyclopedia of Mental Disorder ... | Have you got a Narcissistic Personality Disorder | Scoop.it
Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is defined by the Fourth Edition Text Revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders ( DSM-IV-TR , a handbook that mental health professionals use to diagnose mental disorders) as one of ten personality disorders . As a group, these disorders are described by DSM-IV-TR as “enduring pattern[s] of inner experience and behavior” that are sufficiently rigid and deep-seated to bring a person into repeated conflicts with his or her social and occupational environment. DSM-IV-TR specifies that these dysfunctional patterns must be regarded as nonconforming or deviant by the person’s culture, and cause significant emotional pain and/or difficulties in relationships and occupational performance.

Causes of Narcissistic Personality Disorder in Children

Causes of Narcissistic Personality Disorder in Children | Have you got a Narcissistic Personality Disorder | Scoop.it
Personality disorders are caused by a variety of sources and often can be attributed to genetic factors. If you are concerned about the mental health of your child, it is important to consider how the causes of
narcissistic personality disorder may start in your child and what treatment, if any, can be considered.

Narcissistic personality disorder is a complex mental health complication that plagues many adults and often manifests in childhood. For these children, the development of the personality disorder is typically related to genetics, environment, and a traumatic event in childhood that is unresolved from a mental health standpoint. While some patients can develop symptoms that include cutting self-mutilation, most individuals will simply have no outward visible signs but will have deterioration in their interpersonal relationships.

Catalpa Grove: Narcissism A Psychiatric Buzzword Describing Boys ... | Have you got a Narcissistic Personality Disorder | Scoop.it
The new psychiatric buzzword is narcissism and is being quite freely thrown about when describing politicians, movie stars, and business leaders.

In Greek mythology, Narcissus was the son of the river god Cephissus and the nymph Leiriope and he was distinguished for his beauty. He was assured that he would have a long life as long as he did not look upon his own features. Well, he did of course and fell in love with himself as he stared at his beautiful self in a watery reflection.

The poor god, could not stray away from his beautiful self and either died or killed himself over the obsession of his beauty. And according to the story, the location where he died, the narcissus flower (daffodil) sprang up.

.As with most behavioral problems, the causes and prevention are theory. This is just that - A Theory of what causes Narcissistic Behaviors. A Theory of how to prevent Narcissistic behaviors.

I have made it my life’s work to be a people watcher. I’m not sure where it began but I believe it was during my young adult years when I took a college course in Psychology. Back then Psychology was fairly simplistic, of course I could have delved deeper into it, but the College I attended just covered the basics. I was a young mother and Divorcee` who was trying to earn a degree to make a better life for her child. The field of Psychology interested me greatly, since my ‘ex’ was an easily labeled ‘Sociopath’. With that knowledge I could understand why our marriage didn’t work, and why it wasn’t my fault.

Dealing With Teen Video Game Obsession | Ear Muffs For Women

Numerous parents are worried about the amount of time that their kids are spending playing video games. It is simple to get engrossed in a video game and the competition to become one of the first amongst one’s peers to finish the quest is a big incentive. The difficulty can come when children start to abandon their regular healthy routines so that they can play games.
Going to school is like going to work but with long term consequences. If you lose your job, you can get another one (in theory), but if you neglect your education you can never really get to where you ought to have been. Staying up very late or not doing homework to create more time for playing games is a serious error of judgment.

How to manage a narcissist - Management-Issues

How to manage a narcissist - Management-Issues | Have you got a Narcissistic Personality Disorder | Scoop.it
Narcissism is on the rise in the United States. Surveys have found a steady increase in the narcissistic traits of American college students who now score 30 per cent higher on the Narcissistic Personality Inventory than they did in the 1980s.

Moreover, this trend has been steadily gaining momentum over a number of years. An examination of teenage scores on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory has found that in the 1950s, just 12 per cent of U.S. teenagers agreed with the narcissistic statement, "I'm an important person." By the late 80's this figure had jumped to 80 per cent.

Given this increase in people who narcissistically view themselves as important, it is no wonder that U.S. workplaces are often so contentious. If everyone views themselves as an important person who is entitled to special treatment, managers have an impossible task when it comes to eliciting the teamwork and cooperation that contemporary workplaces demand.

In order to address this problem it is important to understand the traits that narcissists exhibit. The term narcissist has its origins in the story from Greek mythology of the beautiful Narcissus who falls hopelessly in love with his reflection when he stops to take a drink from a stream. Mesmerized by his reflection he spends his remaining days lying by the stream looking at his reflection and declaring his love for it.

Why Organizational Narcissism Leads To Failure - WorkPuzzle

Why Organizational Narcissism Leads To Failure - WorkPuzzle | Have you got a Narcissistic Personality Disorder | Scoop.it
Over the past 23 years I have treated at least 50 clients with the diagnosis of narcissistic personality disorder. In addition, I have performed psychological assessments on well over 1,000 individuals who have fit the criteria for the diagnosis.

Narcissism Unlike most mental health issues, these individuals rarely come in for mental health consultation, until it is too late...primarily because they only come in when they have lost or are about to lose everything in their life. In other words, they don’t feel pain until it's too late. Why? Because these people think so highly of themselves that they are blind to their shortcomings. They have built such an inflated sense of self-worth that they don’t invite critique or input.

These people can tolerate only adulation and surround themselves exclusively with people who will tell them what they want to hear. Their dedication to experiencing themselves as beyond reproach forces them to neglect outside information, as this would threaten their outwardly very confident, but unconsciously very fragile, façade. As a result, narcissistic people ignore all messages of trouble and pain around them until their family or life disintegrates before their eyes. That’s when these individuals come to see me.

Less Than Artful Choices: Narcissistic Personality Disorder According to ... - Big Think

Less Than Artful Choices: Narcissistic Personality Disorder According to ... - Big Think | Have you got a Narcissistic Personality Disorder | Scoop.it
Donald Trump was born in 1946. 34 years later, in the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), the American Psychiatric Association’s hefty volume of mental disorder classifications, the term “Narcissistic Personality Disorder” (NPD) first appeared as a diagnosable disease – Trump would doubtless say it was created in his honor (characteristic #1 of NPD: An exaggerated sense of self-importance). After all, the newly-minted personality disorder made its debut only nine years after he took the helm of his father’s company… and renamed it from Elizabeth Trump & Son to The Trump Organization.

The most recent DSM, DSM-IV, is currently under extensive revision, with DSM-V scheduled for publication sometime in 2013, and both its listed diseases and their definitions are undergoing extensive scrutiny and contentious debate. On the chopping block are five of the ten or so so-called personality disorders, including NPD. Among the reasons for the cut are the frequent overlap between disorders, the general lack of stability of symptoms, and the range of those symptoms in reality, as compared to the either/or approach of the manual (either you have a disorder or you don’t). So, before NPD becomes a thing of the past, at least in its current form, I thought we’d take a moment to reflect on some less than artful choices – or the things that make Trump look like he just stepped out of the fourth edition, symptom by symptom.

*many different rituals, etc. including eating habits, contamination avoidance, etc.

I can safely say I have OCD, but I believe the PPD is a part of this OCD, and shouldn't have its own separate category.

2. NPD ....
