Patrolling for Poachers in Costa Rica (Excerpt from 'Shell Game')

Watch the Full Length - http://bit.ly/1TIBBL3 Since sea turtle conservation in Costa Rica began in the 1950s, conservationists and poachers have peacefully shared the beach. But the murder of the environmentalist Jairo Mora Sandoval in 2013 shocked the eco-friendly country and brought attention to a violent overlap between conservationism and drug trafficking in Costa Rica’s abundant national parks and untouched coastlines. With five per cent of the world’s biodiversity, the unique geography of Costa Rica is a hotspot for eco-tourism and conservation work. However, it is that same geography that makes the country so vulnerable to the violent drug trade that surrounds its borders. Costa Rica has become a major transshipment point for drug traffickers, with deadly consequences for those caught in the middle. In this excerpt, VICE News visits Moín beach with local police to see if tensions remain between poachers and conservationists on the isolated coastline. Do Arrogant Guys Really Get More Women?

Why does it always seem like the most cocky men get a girlfriend? What’s their secret? Read More: Why cocky guys get the girl https://www.uq.edu.au/news/article/2015/06/why-cocky-guys-get-girl “University of Queensland research suggests overconfidence may help people win romantic partners.” Being Confident Will Get You More Dates Than Being Attractive Will, Says Science http://www.thedatereport.com/dating/science/2168-science-explains-why-confidence-scores-you-dates/ “Confidence is sexy. It’s become a bit of a cliche these days: elucidated in Sex and the City (after Miranda fits into her skinny jeans, she’s the belle of the ball at the club Bed, and Carrie’s voice-over notes that sex appeal is “less a state of behind than a state of mind” … anyone?). It’s injected into the creepy creed of the pick-up artist Mystery. Migrant Welfare: Who's Responsible? (Excerpt from 'Migrants Stranded on Kos: Europe or Die')

Demonized by some of the UK's tabloid press and holiday-makers alike, VICE News meets the actual migrants labeled as "boat people" on the Greek island of Kos. Many of these migrants have fled the Assad regime and the Islamic State in the Middle East, only to be met with hostility as they reach the island's shores. The Greek islands are on the new frontier of a major gateway into Europe. The eastern Mediterranean route into Greece, Cyprus, and Bulgaria from Turkey has seen more than 48,000 irregular border crossings between January and May 2015. Kos, a small holiday island whose economy depends on tourism, is facing a refugee crisis right at the beginning of visitor season. Destitute people are sleeping rough or staying with hundreds of others in a small abandoned hotel lacking basic amenities, such as water and electricity. While the authorities refuse to take responsibility, the migrants and refugees who want nothing more than to leave the island find themselves stuck in this desperate situation, often for weeks, waiting for the necessary legal papers to continue their journey to mainland Greece. In this excerpt, VICE News interviews the mayor of Kos and a government representative, where neither can agree on who should be responsible for meeting migrants' basic needs as they arrive on the Greek island. Experimenting on Animals: Inside The Monkey Lab (Trailer)

VICE News gets rare access to Europe’s largest primate testing facility, the Biomedical Primate Research Center (BPRC) in the Netherlands, where scientists try to find cures for the worst human diseases, while struggling to keep life for the monkeys as animal friendly as possible. Inside the laboratories, selected monkeys are shaved, anesthetized, and experimented on for research purposes. Yet the center remains controversial. Protestors gather regularly in front of its gates and there are calls in the Dutch parliament to close the site and switch to alternatives for testing on primates. But as the BPRC explains to VICE News, modern science isn't there yet. In the meantime, it still uses about 200 monkeys a year for a slew of experiments to find cures, and even replacements for primate testing in the future.
