Salford and Deva triumph in Liverpool

Salford and Deva triumph in Liverpool | Handball Super 8 | Scoop.it
Greenbank Sports Academy hosted Super8 English Handball League matches today between Liverpool and Deva (Chester) and Salford and Manchester. The first game saw Dava race in to a four goal lead before Liverpool were able to register a score. By half-time the margin was again four with Deva leading 11-7. Tyler who had been strong in defence and attack for Deva picked up an injury and had to sit out most of the second half, however despite this, with 10 minutes to go Deva had stretched the lead to 13-21. The final score of 18-24 was a fair representation of a game which saw strong defence by Deva giving Liverpool little joy from the back of the court.

The second game was the first Manchester derby of the season. Early on Salford seemed to be in control and raced into a lead but they were gradually pegged back by a Manchester team who began to impose a strong defence on Salford who for the second week in a row will be disappointed by the number of opportunities which went begging.

In the second-half Salford immediately took the initiative and again managed to get a four goal advantage. However, as in the first half Manchester clawed back to the point that they were awarded a penalty with 5 minutes to go which saw a 2 minute suspension for Salford with the score at 19-18 to Salford. The penalty was missed and Salford kept their composure to run out winners 25-23.

The evidence of these games suggest Manchester are going to win games despite losses in the first two of the season. Liverpool have a great deal of work to do if they are not going to pick up the woodenspoon this season. Salford are still not firing on all cylinders and cannot afford to be as wasteful as they were today when they play in London next time. Deva are still a very young squad and will be focused on not losing Super8 status in the first season. If they can maintain their status then the team will only improve. Whatever happens this season, on the evidence of this game, if they can keep the squad together then Deva will be a force in the future.

Super 8 - Leeds Hornets 14 Salford 33

Super 8 - Leeds Hornets 14 Salford 33 | Handball Super 8 | Scoop.it

Salford Handball Club had a convincing win over Leeds Hornets at the Richard Dunn Sports Centre in South Bradford this afternoon. Salford ran out winners by 33 goals to 14 after leading 14 - 8 at the break. Over the first quarter of an hour Leeds were able to stay in touch with Salford, in fact they had been the first to score from the first attack. However, it was the second quarter that saw Salford exert their superiority, racing from 4-4 to 4-10 before Leeds again matched The Reds 4-4 during the last minutes of the first half. It had been clear during the first half that Leeds were short on the right and while They carried a real threat from centre to left wing, the lack of left handers on the right reduced their options. In contrast, Salford were able to move the ball swiftly round the court and were able to attack with strength, particularly on the right. It was only the heroics of the Leeds goalkeeper and some wasteful finishing by Salford which allowed Leeds to turn around just six goals behind.

The second half was over five minutes old before a goal was scored when Salford reached 15. The superior fitness of the Salford team became increasingly apparent and as the half went on Salford were able to stretch their lead with fast breaks and swift attacks. Salford won the second half 19-7.

So to sum up Salford look as good as last season and will take some beating. Leeds have the basis of a team that is going to win some games, goalkeeper, centre and left wing all put in great performances but fitness and a left handed player are needed.

Earlier in the day London GD had defeated a depleted Liverpool side by 44-14.
