A makerspace is a collaborative work space inside a school, library or separate public/private facility for making, learning, exploring and sharing that uses high tech to no tech tools.  These spaces are open to kids, adults, and entrepreneurs and have a variety of maker equipment including 3D printers, laser cutters, cnc machines, soldering irons and even sewing machines.  A makerspace however doesn’t need to include all of these machines or even any of them to be considered a makerspace.  If you have cardboard, legos and art supplies you’re in business.  It’s more of the maker mindset of creating something out of nothing and exploring your own interests that’s at the core of a makerspace.  These spaces are also helping to prepare those who need the critical 21st century skills in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).  They provide hands on learning, help with critical thinking skills and even boost self-confidence.  Some of the skills that are learned in a makerspace pertain to electronics, 3d printing, 3D modeling, coding, robotics and even woodworking,   Makerspaces are also fostering entrepreneurship and are being utilized as incubators and accelerators for business startups.  There have already been some amazing success stories that have come out of makerspaces to date.

A pretty well-reasoned, fundamental thought process for most knowledge work research.  This serves as an even better backward (there-to-here) model to guide the core research workflow process automation  a knowledge worker may want to devise, install.  Think work product-informed -> DevonThink structures -> DevonAgent w/'Active Filtered' automated searches.  The most important drivers here are - 'ethical' - (more than just multiple sources, a stage needs to be added at the work product stage to provide authenticity) and - 'bias' -  (a post automated search,  subsequent manual search for corroborating items selection to provide authority).

Such debate about the place and purpose of online searching in learning and assessments is not new. But rather than thinking of ways to prevent students from cheating or plagiarising in their assessed pieces of work, maybe our obsession with the “authenticity” of their coursework or assessment is missing another important educational point.

This is so right on - thank you. Educating one's self online is empowering only if the user understands the difference between "crap collection" and that which is meaningful and useable at the time of curation. Curation only has value when we use the information in the moment as a motivator and inspiration to carry on in bettering ourselves in the here and now. This is my idea of content curation and educating on what speaks to our hearts in the very NOW moment.

Online searching/learning has a definite and substantial impact in our world today. Just remember to use regularly what you are saving (or curating), and to balance it all with real world experience.  Visit your elders, your neighbors, your parents, your community, your friends (and listen to their stories): in many cases they were alive many decades before you were.  They saw wars, political changes, social movements, etc., that can never be described in the same way online than from first hand experience.  Honor these people by your presence AND learn all you can online. Temper all of it by having one foot in the world of FREE information and one foot in the world of first-hand contact with those who lived those times. The cool thing about attending a school (in person) is you get the best of both worlds - interaction with others and your time online.

Explains a lot about how digital tech can help, though on investigation this seems to be a model developed seemingly from nowhere without much academic work behind it. Example of a simple model stating the obvious? Does it matter that it's origins are hazy? Having had the chance to look into it and its creator, it's interesting to note how popular it is and how accepted it is, without much critique. Is it really that great a model?! Just wondering! Raises a lot of questions.

I've used Diigo for years. Changes in the Diigo interface just aren't working for me so I'm ready to try some alternatives.

Many of us sincerely wish students would follow their passions, but many of them, especially the younger ones, sincerely don’t know what that is. When we ask them, “What interests you?” and they respond, “I don’t know,” they aren’t being disingenuous or stubborn. The enormity and vagueness of the question after they’ve been conditioned to provide “right” or “correct” answers sets them up for fear and a blank brain.

Below are strategies I teach teachers when they want to encourage student-led research and they are willing to slow down the process to make the early steps visible.

In addition, some high schoolers tinkering their free periods away can discover a passion—sometimes leading to a future educational focus or even scholarship money.
