C'est pourtant une activité prometteuse et décisive, partagée par une petite poignée d'industriels. Nous avons eu le privilège de pénétrer les entrailles de la SNAM, une de ces sociétés, sur leur site de Saint-Quentin-Fallavier près de Lyon.

It can hardly become more official: CATL released construction details of their first battery factory outside China. The facility in Erfurt, a town in the East of Germany, targets a capacity of 14 GWh and will cost CATL 240 million euros.

CATL says the move “emphasizes their commitment to the European automotive market in general and the growth opportunities electric vehicles represent in Europe”. Adds Dr. Robin Zeng, Chairman of CATL: “Building a smart battery plant in Germany is the first step in turning our European investment plan into reality. Developing a production facility in Germany will also deepen the collaboration between the European OEMs and CATL.” Specifically in Germany, CATL has scored large supply agreements with carmakers. BMW agreed to buy cells worth over a billion euros and had recommended Erfurt reportedly. The facility is close to the BMW Dingolfing factory in Bavaria, where the iNEXT will be manufactured starting in 2021. The CATL battery production in Erfurt will run at full capacity from 2022. Apart from making batteries, they will also install a R&D center for the development of smart manufacturing technology with a focus on battery production. In addition testing, quality control and services are also in focus at the facility. CATL will set up a project company in Thuringia as an independent business. They will deal with clients such as Volkswagen and Daimler that set up supply contracts with the Chinese manufacturer for the I.D. series as well as the EQ brand. Furthermore, PSA and Renault-Nissan will likely be sourcing some battery cells made in Erfurt from CATL too.

Les détenteurs de véhicules électriques et hybrides rechargeables peuvent désormais utiliser la carte carburant du pétrolier pour faire le plein en électricité. Ils ont accès aux 11 000 bornes de recharge du réseau NewMotion en France. Rappelons que l’opérateur est propriété de Shell depuis l’an dernier.

China aims for 900 kW hyper power charging standard

China is planning an upgrade of its fast-charging standards GB/T that would make the 350 kW CCS or the 400 kW ChaDeMo aims for look like child’s play. The new GB/T standard due in 2019/20 would enable charging with four times higher power than today. In numbers that mean charging with 900 kW at 1,500 Volt, whereas the current GB/T version is at 237.5 kW and 950 Volt in China. The new numbers were part of a presentation by the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) which the CHAdeMO General Assembly has obtained. If this new “hyper power” charging standard becomes a reality, it would be limited to China. It does set the bar high though, given it would aim for double the power than the latest HPC standards CCS and ChaDeMo standards of Europe and Japan are gearing up for. Interesting times ahead for carmakers and grid operators in China, surely.

IONITY will be fitting a total of 80 Tank & Rast rest stations in Germany with EV charging infrastructure. The two cooperation partners announced this at the unveiling of the first German HPC park at the Autobahn stop near Brohltal. The first location connected with the IONITY EV charging network in Germany was opened in April near the A61 in the state of Rhineland Palatinate. The new charging park in Brohltal is nearby as well. The location was only now officially opened by representatives from politics and industry, where the cooperation partners also revealed their plans for the next step. The plans will see IONITY adding high power charging stations with up to 350 kW capacity to 80 more locations by the Tank & Rast gas station service provider across the country. The initiative is supported by the ministry for traffic and digital infrastructure and the appropriate local politicians.For the gas station operator, this marks the second step in electrification, as they had previously established a national charging network with 50 to 150 kW charging stations. So far, more than 300 gas stations have been fitted with EV charging infrastructure. IONITY plans to expand to more than 400 HPC locations across Europe. The 80 planned stations in Germany will make a significant first step in that direction. Behind the initiative is a HPC alliance between BMW, Daimler, Ford and Volkswagen, along with subsidiaries Audi and Porsche.

The 3MW storage unit built from reused electric car batteries is among the largest such projects in Europe. Located at the back of the Ajax Amsterdam arena it the result of collaboration between Nissan, Eaton and others. The 3 megawatt storage system provides energy for the stadium, its visitors, neighbours and the Dutch energy grid. It combines Eaton power conversion units and the equivalent of 148 Nissan LEAF batteries. Other partners include BAM, The Mobility House and the Johan Cruijff ArenA. Funding comes through the Amsterdam Climate and Energy Fund (AKEF) and Interreg. The system guarantees the arena’s energy supply even during a power outage. In turn, the energy storage balances supply and demand of energy in the Johan Cruijff ArenA and the grid. For example, the system will provide back-up power and provide relief to the energy grid by flattening the peaks that occur during concerts for example.

Infrastructure provider Fortum has raised prices for fast-charging at its stations by 60 percent in Norway. For now the price hike affects 35 charging stations were the price per minute of charging increased from 2.50 to 4 Kronen. Fortum claims deficits. The move however, effectively makes fast-charging more costly than fuel, according to a report in Norwegian media. Fortum says they had to increase prices because their fast-charging businesses is showing deficits. Apparently their charging stations are not being used often enough and they have to bear high cost for maintaining the network on top.

La société dirigée par Yoann Nussbaumer s’attaque aujourd’hui au marché des flottes avec ChargeMap Fleet. Cette nouvelle offre s’articule autour du badge ChargeMap Pass, la carte d’accès et de paiement aux bornes de recharge commercialisée par l’entreprise depuis un an. Ce badge est aujourd’hui accepté sur plus de 50 réseaux en France.
Le principal intérêt de l’offre calibrée pour les professionnels est que toutes les informations liées aux recharges effectuées par les collaborateurs à l’aide du ChargeMap Pass remontent directement sur un outil en ligne. Les responsables de flottes peuvent ainsi suivre toutes les dépenses, à l’image de ce qu’ils font avec les cartes carburant classiques.

The era of Sergio Marcchionne is nearing its end but before the head of Fiat-Chrysler will quit his job next year, he wants to ready all brands for an electrified future. His 5-year plan calls for a move away from diesel and into electric and hybrid models.
The CEO of the FCA group, Sergio Marchionne, had been heard a sceptic when it comes to electric cars. However, he had also moved gradually the growing circle of executives that see themselves forced, or drawn, to electrification. In the case of FCA, the undertaking is huge as hybrid and electric models must be introduced across all brands, including Maserati or Jeep.

Toyota investit massivement dans l'hydrogène

Pour Toyota, l’avenir de l’automobile sera résolument tourné vers les véhicules à pile à combustible. Pour preuve : le constructeur ambitionne de faire progresser significativement ses ventes mondiales de ce type de modèle, pour passer de 3 000 unités actuelles à 30 000, à partir de 2020, dont un tiers écoulé sur son marché national. Mais pour espérer atteindre cet objectif, encore faut-il être doté de l'outil industriel adéquat. Toyota prend donc les devants et annonce la construction d’un nouveau bâtiment destiné à intensifier la fabrication de pile à combustible, mais aussi l’ajout d’une ligne de production sur son site de Shimoyama, pour la conception en grande série de réservoirs d’hydrogène à haute pression. Jusqu’à présent, les réservoirs étaient assemblés en petite série à Honsha.

Véhicules électriques et autonomes : la France affiche ses ambitions

C'est ce mardi 22 mai que les ministères de l’Economie, de l’Environnement et des Transports présentaient le contrat stratégique de la filière automobile. Elaboré avec les entreprises de l’automobile, il est axé sur deux leviers : l’un, la croissance des ventes de modèles 100 % électriques, l’autre, le développement des bornes de recharge. Objectif : assurer l’avenir de cette "industrie cruciale" pour l’économie.  Le gouvernement vise 150 000 ventes de véhicules 100 % électriques sur le marché français en 2022, VP et VUL,contre 30 000 en 2017. A cet horizon, 600 000 véhicules électriques seraient en circulation, en plus de 400 000 hybrides rechargeables.
 Un accroissement des ventes qui ne pourra se faire sans une offre industrielle dans le domaine des batteries, que le gouvernement souhaite voir émerger, mais aussi sans le développement du réseau de bornes de recharge. Sur ce volet, l’Etat promet qu’il "assurera un cadre juridique et financier favorable à l’installation de bornes de recharge", et qu'un "soutien financier" au déploiement des bornes sera mis en œuvre. Levier majeur évoqué, "une plus grande prise en charge des coûts de raccordements des bornes jusqu’à fin 2021, financé par le réseau électrique". Avec ce soutien financier, l’Etat espère atteindre 100 000 bornes en 2022, soit une pour dix véhicules électriques en circulation.
Le véhicule autonome n’a pas été oublié par ce contrat stratégique avec un appel à projets lancé en juin. Doté de 40 millions d’euros, il vise à soutenir un programme d’expérimentations de véhicules autonomes représentant plus de 200 millions d’euros d’investissements.

In Switzerland a comprehensive H2 fuel station network is supposed to be built by 2023. For this purpose, seven companies, including gas station operators and the wholesalers Coop and Migros, have founded an association. Currently the alpine republic has only two H2 fuel stations: One is a publicly accessible station at the Hunzenschwil AG in the Aargau Kanton, while the other station, which drivers must previously have registered to use, is located at the Eidgenössische Materialprüfungs- und Forschungsanstalt (Empa) near Zurich.

In parallel, the company is active in R&D, with a focus on V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid) technologies.

BP will buy one of the UK’s largest EV charging providers. Chargemaster runs about 6,500 stations in their Polar network. They did not disclose any details but the new company will be called BP Chargemaster and plans on setting up more fast-charging stations at pit stops. The acquisition follows a string of deals that see the petrochemical company buying into green technologies and BP say they will spend 500 million dollar a year on clean energy. How much of that money has fallen to Chargemaster is unknown but BP plan to use their technology to roll out ultra-fast chargers (150 kW) across its 1,200 petrol stations across the UK over the next 12 months. Upon completion of the transaction, Chargemaster employees will continue to be employed by BP Chargemaster or its subsidiaries. BP Chargemaster will operate as a wholly-owned BP entity. BP had decided to invest in batteries and charging infrastructure in August 2017 when CEO Bob Dudley announced that it was feasible to add EV charging stations at BP pit stops around the world. BP also invested 5 million dollars in FreeWire Technologies earlier this year, which produces mobile fast charging systems for EVs. BP is planning on also testing their Mobi Charger at selected locations in Europe.

Charging technology specialist ChargePoint has purchased Kisensum, acquiring an expert in the development of software solutions in the energy sector. The company will continue to exist as a unit after the acquisition, confirmed by ChargePoint. Kisensum will continue to operate from their current location in Oakland, California. The team will also continue to work on the development and deployment of fleet and energy management solutions, as well as continue to honor their current customers and pilot projects. The purchase price was not revealed. ChargePoint is one of the largest companies active in the charging infrastructure sector. According to their own statements, the Silicon Valley based company is currently undergoing the most “aggressive growth phase in their ten-year history”. The company counts more than 51,000 charging stations currently operational and thousands of customers, including private companies, cities and service providers.

Daimler and its Mercedes-Benz Energy subsidiary have turned a former coal plant in Germany into an 8.96 MW, 9.8 MWh energy storage facility. The facility, in Elverlingsen, will act as a "live replacement parts store" for Daimler’s fleet of third generation electric smart cars, the company said in a statement. The storage facility will also supply energy to the German grid to provide primary balancing power.

Nicolas Hulot appelle au développement de la filière hydrogène

La France veut mettre le cap sur l’hydrogène. Cette énergie alternative fait l’objet d’un plan gouvernemental dont Nicolas Hulot vient de révéler les grandes lignes. Le ministre de la Transition écologique et solidaire, qui se dit "intimement convaincu que l’hydrogène jouera un rôle important dans la transition énergétique", débloquera par le biais de l’Ademe une enveloppe de 100 millions d’euros pour le déploiement de la filière à compter de 2019.
 Une partie conséquente du plan de déploiement de l’hydrogène pour la transition énergétique est consacrée aux transports. "L’hydrogène, s’il est produit à base d’énergies renouvelables, peut contribuer à la mobilité sans émission de gaz à effet de serre des trains, des flottes de camions, des flottes municipales et des bus, permettant ainsi d’apporter une réponse aux problèmes de qualité de l’air", estime Nicolas Hulot. Il est notamment fait mention d’un développement de l’hydrogène dans les flottes de véhicules professionnels.
Un objectif de 5 000 véhicules utilitaires légers et de 200 véhicules lourds (bus, camions, trains, bateaux) ainsi que la construction de 100 stations alimentées en hydrogène produit localement a été fixé pour 2023. Un objectif encore plus ambitieux a été arrêté pour 2028 : de 20 000 à 50 000 VUL, de 800 à 2 000 véhicules lourds et de 400 à 1 000 stations.
La France compte suivre les exemples de l’Allemagne, du Japon, de la Chine ou encore de la Californie qui ont d’ores et déjà amorcé un mouvement vers cette énergie alternative. La Californie apparaît aujourd’hui comme la zone la plus avancée avec 7 000 véhicules hydrogène en circulation et 62 stations. Les objectifs les plus ambitieux sont à mettre au crédit du Japon et de la Chine, qui visent respectivement 800 000 et 1 million de véhicules à pile à combustible à l’horizon 2030.

In the last earnings call, Musk spoke of performance between 200 and 250 kW per Supercharger station. Further details have not been revealed yet, however.
This marks a definite step back for Elon, who had stated that the next generation chargers would feature capacities far above 350 kW towards the end of last year. A reporter further queried Musk online, who responded stating that 350 kW capacity would be “children’s playthings”. He also addressed this during the earnings call, however, and stated that the 350 kW would have several disadvantages, including energy density and battery costs.

BMW is setting themselves a step ahead of the competition by selling a wireless inductive charging system as of July, called BMW Wireless Charging. Sales will start simultaneously in the USA, China, Japan, the UK and Germany; some of the most important markets for the company. The module itself costs 890 euro in the vehicle side, and another 2,315 euro mounting fee and taxes for the GroundPad module in the building. While the sum suggests that the module will be for sale, the website mentions leasing extras. The charging capacity is at 3.2 kW, where a 9.2 kWh battery can be charged in about 3.5 hours. This single phasing charging is a tribute to international marketing – only in Europe are three-phase chargers the norm, which is often forgotten in the discussion.

Le véhicule électrique a progressé de 21 % dans le monde au 1er trimestre 2018

Les véhicules électriques ont un nouveau trimestre de référence. D'après les statistiques publiées par le cabinet Jato, ce 21 mai 2018, les immatriculations conjuguées de véhicules électriques, d'hybrides et d'hybrides rechargeables ont atteint le volume record pour un premier trimestre de 1,09 millions d'unités. En comparaison à l'an passé, ce total s'inscrit en hausse de 21 %.
Avec 67 % de croissance, le segment des pures électriques grimpe à 174 000 unités. La Chine et dans une moindre mesure les Etats-Unis et le Japon font valoir leur droit à dominer le classement. Dans l'Empire du milieu les constructeurs ont totalisé 83 627 unités au premier trimestre, soit 119 % de plus qu'en 2017. Les deux autres ont respectivement cumulé 26 224 (+18 %) et 10 732 unités (+102 %).
