The Death of Innovation: Romney will end wind energy production tax credit - CleanTechnica

The Death of Innovation: Romney will end wind energy production tax credit - CleanTechnica | Green Energy Innovation | Scoop.it

This is really unfortunate... The simple notion that Romney MAY become President and end the wind energy production tax credit has already had drastic effects on the renewable energy industry in the US. Innovation should not have a start and finish. Clearly changes need to be made to the system so that the fate of initiatives such as this are not left to the whimsical decisions of the next Republican oil baron.

Review: End of an Era - George Monbiot

Review: End of an Era - George Monbiot | Green Energy Innovation | Scoop.it

"So now what do we do to defend life on Earth?" This is a very thought provoking question, particularly when posed in light of the recent end to the utterly useless Rio+20 Summit. And while the author makes some very strong points as to how our collective governing bodies have failed us and why we should not give up the fight, he leaves this initial question almost completely unaddressed other than to say that you can't rely on anyone else. I enjoyed reading this article and very much respect the passion it conveys. That said, I was left with a contemptuous sentiment after having read it because the article is entirely PROBLEM centric.

Governments and global markets alike take their cues from the people they service. So if they are not changing their tune, it’s because we’re not speaking loud enough. Buying behavior, votes, protests, rallies, walk outs; all of these are cues which governments and markets base their activity on. African Americans and women did not gain equal rights because their governing bodies took it upon themselves to make a change; their governing bodies begrudgingly made the change because their citizens gave them no other choice.

At this point, every person on Earth that cares about the ecosystem knows that our governing bodies have failed us time and time again to create an actionable plan that curbs global climate change. What we don’t know is what to do about it. Let’s focus future thought leadership pieces on SOLUTIONS. No more venting, no more defining the problem or placing blame (because realistically we have all failed, not just our governments). Let’s talk change, let’s talk action and let take the necessary steps to make it happen.

Emissions cut by more than 40%: Air Canada Makes Landmark 1st Biofuel Flight - CleanTechnica

Emissions cut by more than 40%: Air Canada Makes Landmark 1st Biofuel Flight - CleanTechnica | Green Energy Innovation | Scoop.it

This is a very exciting advancement in the use of biofuels to cut global greenhouse gas emissions.

It has been estimated that air travel contributes as much as 5% to our total annual emissions. And Beatrice Schell, a spokeswoman for the European Federation for Transport and Environment, has been quoted saying, "One person flying in an airplane for one hour is responsible for the same greenhouse gas emissions as a typical Bangladeshi in a whole year."

This is clearly a very serious issue that requires the immediate attention of governments worldwide. Kudos to Air Canada for getting the ball rolling.

Will Scotland Dominate in Smart Grid? Greentech Media

Will Scotland Dominate in Smart Grid? Greentech Media | Green Energy Innovation | Scoop.it

It's nice to see that some countries are stepping up to the plate and setting their sights higher than simply meeting mandates. 100% of energy consumption coming from renewables by 2020 is lofty goal, but it is also an achievable one. And even if Scotland falls short by half, 50% renewables would still be quite an accomplishment to reach in under a decade.

What do cell phones, energy efficiency, and renewable energy have in common?... - CleanTechnica | Green Energy Innovation | Scoop.it

"What do cell phones, energy efficiency, and renewable energy have in common? One, they are dynamic areas of technology development and market competition, which makes straight-line projections pretty useless. And two, they are distributed, with millions of loosely networked people and organizations working on them in parallel. Distributed, human-scale technologies come in small increments. They replicate quickly, so there’s more variation and competitive selection, and thus more evolution."

The Foresight of Thomas Edison & Solar Energy - CleanTechnica

The Foresight of Thomas Edison & Solar Energy - CleanTechnica | Green Energy Innovation | Scoop.it

This was a brilliant outlook from a brilliant inventor. In 1931, it was virtually unheard of for someone to speculate the finite limits of a particular resource like oil or coal. Now, some 80 years later, we have unfortunately reached the point Edison dreaded where the exhaustion of fossil fuel deposits could potentially be reached before we as a global community can transition our energy consumption to be 100% reliant on renewable sources.
