This Is How To Make A Team Brainstorming Session Effective

This Is How To Make A Team Brainstorming Session Effective | Design, social media and web resources | Scoop.it

If you want to hold brainstorms that unearth better, more creative ideas, it all starts with the number of people in the room.

That’s my first tip for you: Follow the “pizza rule” for brainstorming. If you’re unfamiliar with the “pizza rule,” it’s the idea that if you have more people in a room than you could feed with a pizza, there are too many people in that room to hold a productive meeting.

The same rule goes for a brainstorming session: If you’ve got a dozen people sitting around a table, expect a really long list of truly mediocre ideas.

So, what else can you do other than bribe a group of two to six people with pizza to unearth good ideas? So glad you asked.

Also check out Edward De Bono's 6 Thinking Hats book - fast and effective way to problem solve involving brainstorming that you might also like to read. Have a great week ahead.

Squashing bad ideas could lead people to fear speaking up, missing out on good ideas as a result. But if you’re giving every idea equal due regardless of merit, then you get off-track real fast and end up down a bad idea rabbit hole.

Google search is capable of so much more, and using the advanced Google search tips outlined in this article, will make your life much easier.

Everyone Hates Setting Goals. Here's How Google Makes It Easier for Its Employees

Everyone Hates Setting Goals. Here's How Google Makes It Easier for Its Employees | Design, social media and web resources | Scoop.it

It's that time of year--leaders everywhere are charging employees with the task of establishing goals for 2018. If you've never been through a structured process, this exercise can be daunting, and frankly, feel like a big waste of time. I can assure you, it's not.

Setting goals is critical. Goals provide direction, help you focus, prioritize your time and energy, and ensure that you can objectively prove you've advanced the company's agenda.

But just any goal won't do. Research shows that goals are not only important but also that the level of specificity and difficulty matters. Goals that are both clear and challenging drive higher levels of performance.

To set their teams up for success, many organizations use SMART goals. Google leaders use something a little different--"Objectives and Key Results" (OKRs). On Google's re:Work site, a resource that shares the company's perspective on people operations, Google explains the concept.

This is a very interesting way to set goals.  I've heard of many different ways, however, have never been introduced to this.  I like the collaborative effort, the transparency, and the simplicity.  There are different templates that can be used.  I'm still reviewing what is out there I'm leaning towards Weekdone.  I can see the framework working not only as a company goal setting plan, it can work as a family or personal goal planning system.

Heidi Freeman's curator insight, February 16, 10:53 AM

This could be a goal-setting technique that may work for you! Goal setting is a daunting task, but one we really need to master. OKR, Objective and Key Results, allows you to dream big and then figure out how you will measure your progress.

Start Caring About the User Experience Now #websitedesign

Start Caring About the User Experience Now #websitedesign | Design, social media and web resources | Scoop.it

User experience is widely encompassing, involving everything from usability, accessibility and performance to design, aesthetics and marketing.

Essentially, the user experience is the connection, emotions and experience a user feels when using a product or site. If the user experience is poor, it's unlikely they will come back. If the user experience is memorable, however, a site or product can effectively engage for long-term potential.

Small businesses especially should care about user experience since they have little room for error compared to their larger competitors. Small businesses often lack the budget to undergo a major brand or marketing transition, making a consumers' first impression of the user experience vital in shaping their chances of becoming a repeat customer.

Here are six reasons why small businesses should care about UX, as well as what they should focus on:

8 Easy Workspace Fixes to Improve Productivity, Mood, Creativity, and Health

8 Easy Workspace Fixes to Improve Productivity, Mood, Creativity, and Health | Design, social media and web resources | Scoop.it

Yesterday I walked into my home office and examined the space from a fresh perspective. It hasn't had a facelift in about ten years and I've hardly noticed its dingy appearance. Don't get me wrong, I love my office but it's simply out of date and no longer reflects my personality. It's time for a change.

Approaching the challenge like any diligent, problem-solving coach, I did my research. What does science say about an office space that boosts energy, creativity, and productivity, all while projecting a safe, calm feeling for clients? Yes, it's possible, and you can do it all on your own. Here's what I've learned.

1. Use color, but not just any color.

Color psychology studies (and there are many) reveal changes in the body and brain when people view certain colors. These changes influence productivity, creativity, health, stress levels, focus, communication, and emotions. That's some powerful influence!

Color psychologist Angela Wright explains the phenomenon this way: "Color travels to us on wavelengths of photons from the sun. Those are converted into electrical impulses that pass to the part of the brain known as the hypothalamus, which governs our endocrine system and hormones, and much of our activity."

First decide what's most important about how color affects you, your employees, and your visitors. In an interview with Chris Bailey, Wright offered this simple breakdown of the effects of color on the mind: "The four psychological primaries are: red, blue, yellow, and green. And they affect the body (red), the mind (blue), the emotions, the ego, and self-confidence (yellow), and the essential balance between the mind, the body, and the emotions (green)." But it's not that simple. Bailey nicely breaks down the process of choosing just the right color in this article.

Use Spring cleaning to do more than giving your workspace a good dusting, throwing out piles of no longer relevant printouts and magazines,  and fishing out those chocolate wrappers, forgotten coffee mugs and apple cores.

Why not give it a fresh makeover, a change of color, a little rearranging, update the wall decor.
Fresh surroundings = fresh outlook = fresh ideas = fresh business.

You'll feel better and perform better.

5 tips for making meetings more effective and Efficient

5 tips for making meetings more effective and Efficient | Design, social media and web resources | Scoop.it
No one likes meetings for the time they consume, but many of them continue to be run ineffectively. Here are some tips to help you keep meetings as small, short, and informative as possible.

Via TechinBiz

Martin Mekatrig's curator insight, March 6, 7:00 AM
Meetings are universally despised, by all but the neediest attention seekers who will say anything, no matter how irrelevant, as long as all eyes are on them, or those with a super ego who use meetings to browbeat colleagues.

But what about the rest of us?

This gathering with the appearance of a social event you wished you could avoid and the feeling of a stint in an interrogation chamber  has the effect of causing people to perform not contribute, trying to get colleges to believe they are on top of there game and producing.
We get intra-personal dynamics, political manifestations, OTT performances, exaggerations and downright lies.

Is it any wonder why most meetings are so ineffective? Many walk away with a sense of, 'well I survived that one' rather than 'we have had a positive outcome and I feel good about myself and the team'.

How many times have issues instead of being resolved are kicked down by the line because no one wants to put forward a plan which might (not will ) fail?

How many times has the best solution been overridden by the solution from the one who shouts loudest?

How many times has a 'meeting, being the boss shoving his latest plan down the throats of his staff and woe betides anyone who points out the obvious failings. Followed by a meeting in which blame for failure is apportioned on some poor victim who should've pointed out these obvious failings in the last meeting?

Meetings which are seen to be effective and where people are encouraged to put forward ideas which are listened to and properly debated are events that are looked forward to.

Meetings were both success and failure are seen as team centered, ( we all agreed we are all responsible )are not dreaded by staff but seen as positive events where success are shared and failure is jointly learned from.

These 5 tips may not get your meetings to be the at the level they should be at, but they will get you started

15 Favorite Interview Questions to Completely Disarm Job Candidates (in a Really Good Way)

15 Favorite Interview Questions to Completely Disarm Job Candidates (in a Really Good Way) | Design, social media and web resources | Scoop.it

Maybe your favorite interview question is one of the most common interview questions. Maybe it's one of the most common behavioral interview questions. Or maybe you have a less conventional interview question you like to ask, like those asked by these company founders and CEOs.

What is your favorite interview question? To find out, we asked the Inc. community on LinkedIn to provide their favorites, as well as their reasons why. Below are some of the responses; go here and here to see them all.

1. "What is the hardest thing you've ever done?"

The answer can be personal or professional. What the candidate accomplished isn't as important as how -- and why. What were the hurdles? What were the roadblocks? Did the candidate seek help? Does the candidate credit the people who helped?

The answer also can provide insight into how the candidate defines "hard," and how their perspective align with the challenges your business faces.

A few people have however grumbled that blaze flash website header design does not work. They say that the glimmer film takes too long to load, thus the vast majority will end up anxious and leave. To be honest, this is consistent with some degree. However, in all actuality, there are approaches to maintain a strategic distance from this. For example, rather than influencing the entire motion picture to stack at one time, the creator could separate it into parts.

Ten principles of design thinking that deliver business value | McKinsey

Ten principles of design thinking that deliver business value | McKinsey | Design, social media and web resources | Scoop.it

The importance of design is only increasing. Consumers have instant access to global marketplaces and ever-higher expectations of service. They no longer distinguish between physical and digital experiences. This makes it increasingly difficult to make your product or service stand out from the crowd. As a result, design has become a CEO-level topic for many executives.

But while the concept of “design thinking” emerged as far back as 1969, and while many companies have tried to adopt its principles, relatively few have made true shifts in growth and profitability through design. Fewer still have been able to prove concretely the exact value of the design actions they’ve taken.

We have begun to explore the underlying design practices that allow some firms to succeed above others. Our research into global companies across multiple industries aims to uncover the connections between business value and design. Our early findings, presented in this article, are not yet statistically significant; we will continue to expand our data set in 2018 to reach that goal. But already some trends are evident. We see ten design actions across three themes that appear to correlate with improved financial performance.
