Learning about Ancient Mesopotamian Religion and Culture

Located in the Tigris-Euphrates valley was the land of Mesopotamia. It was here that the world’s first cities were founded between 4000 – 3500 BC by the Sumerian people. They developed their own belief system, with a variety of gods and goddesses. They developed religious practices and rituals for worshiping these powerful deities. David Arrieta's curator insight, April 11, 2014 5:21 PM

After reading this article, it contributed to my knowledge of the Mesopotamian Empire. There were multiple reasons as to why Mesopotamia collapsed; most people assume that it was because of their loss in a war, but that was only a piece. Irrigation was a major part of the Mesopotamian lifestyle, it helped it become one of the strongest empires of its time, but it was part of its down fall. During the Winter and Sprig months flooding would occur and flow into the crops, and would soon evaporate leaving its rich salt like nutrients. So much of the minerals had been left soaked up by the soil that I eventually made the fresh fertile soil poisonous thus not being able to farm in the area.

vanessa ortiz's curator insight, April 19, 2014 10:05 PM

This article says that the fall of Mesopotamia was due to a lack of water for their crops.  This theory could be very possible since the land today is dry.  With a lack of a water supply people would have not been able to survive therefore the kingdom came to an end.
