100 Drones Dance like Fireflies in the Sky for Vivid Sydney | Communication design | Scoop.it

On Wednesday night, 100 drones took to the sky to perform a synchronized “ballet” to live music played by the Sydney Youth Orchestra.After a coordinated ascent to 105 meters, the 100 LED-equipped quadrocopters performed a series of intricate formations, creating three-dimensional figures above the water at Sydney harbor.

Drones can also be used for good.

Antonios Bouris's insight:

Drones are much more easily deployed than conventional search-and-rescue operations. Though the teacher remains missing, the military drone was able to provide a high-tech scan of a large forested area in a short amount of time.

The ability to shoot outstanding video footage, is taking a giant leap forward going into 2015.

The specs on GoPro's new Hero 4 are jaw-dropping-- UltraHD 4k video at 30 frames per second?! 1080p HD video at 120 frames per second?! WiFi & Bluetooth all in a box that weighs about as much as a Snicker's bar and priced at only $500?!

Jaw appropriately dropped.

Along with the continually improving camera technologies, drone tech is keeping pace and it's giving cinematographers options for new perspectives that up until a year or two ago were imaginable only with CGI.

To get a sample of the creative options this combination offers filmmakers and cinematographers take a look at PlexiDrone's video: http://youtu.be/hROA-vOyId4 ;

The hardware and software that run unmanned vehicles in the Arctic must be hardened against the extreme environment and have excellent acoustic communication with their mother ship, since ice, and therefore the vehicles portals to the ocean water, are always moving.

Antonios Bouris's insight:

The photos from the drone provide a near-infrared reading that provides information concerning how efficiently plants are absorbing sunlight to facilitate photosynthesis. Farmers can use the information to adjust their distribution of water and fertilizer to their crops.

Serial hacker Samy Kamkar has released all the hardware and software specifications that hobbyists need to build an aerial drone that seeks out other drones in the air, hacks them, and turns them into a conscripted army of unmanned vehicles under the attacker's control.
