Reciprocal inter-insurance exchange - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Reciprocal inter-insurance exchange - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A reciprocal inter-insurance exchange may be operated directly by its policyholders. In theory, a small group of individuals could band together to "cross insure" each other on an informal basis.

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Why are we not talking about doing medical insurance this way? I really believe this was what medical insurance was more like in the pre-HMO days. Our Auto Insurance is this type. It is USAA. This would make the medical insurance system and health care of our nation truly consumer owned and controlled and for the most part leave the risk from too much government control and too much for-profit mooching out of the conversation. People with low or no income could elect with national or state medical voucher to buy in as subscribers like everyone else.

There could be more than one to choose from formed by various groups, but since the subscribers would be the voting co-op shareholders on how the business is run there really may be no need for various models.  For-profit insurance does not place their customers on their board of directors or give equal voice to them. The subscriber saving deposit could also build up as a burial policy with the excess being left to those designated as a small life insurance. This would solve another end of life issue for many.

One of the most popular provisions of the Affordable Care Act's Three-Legged Stool's "Blue Leg" is the prohibition of caps on annual or lifetime benefits. When you consider that a baby born prematurely or a cancer patient undergoing chemotherapy can eat up several million dollars worth of care within a few months, this makes perfect sense. Even a moderately wealthy family can be brought down by high medical costs, and a middle class family can be financially wiped out. If you're lower income, don't even get me started. Naturally, the Trump Administration's response to everything above is "Hmmmmm...screw all that:" After approving Medicaid work requirements, Trump’s HHS aims for lifetime coverage limits After allowing states to impose work requirements for Medicaid enrollees, the Trump administration is now pondering lifetime limits on adults’ access to coverage.

View a PDF of this letter here. Dear Representative, On behalf of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, I urge you to oppose H.R. 3299, the “Protecting Consumers’ Access to Credit Act of 2017.” H.R. 3299 would allow payday lenders and other non-bank institutions to use “rent-a-bank” arrangements to evade state usury laws … Read More
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

With so many low income individuals to prey on in Mississippi our northern Mississippi elected GOP officials were proud to cast votes to support the continued legal rip off of those most vulnerable. Do we smell an "ALEC" and libertarian greedy skunk smell in this? Notice the bill does not say “permission to charge 300% interest to desperate individuals” rather it says protection for consumers. Isn't there surely some law about fraud in mistitling legal bills and laws to trip up voters and citizens?

US senator Sheldon Whitehouse didn’t hold back when talking about America’s role as laundering the world’s dirty money on Tuesday, Feb 6. “Our European partners are doing their part to combat crime facilitated by shell corporations. If we don’t soon follow suit, I fear we will risk losing our place as that city on a hill and beacon of justice,” he said at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing.

Last week, the US was ranked the world’s second worst jurisdiction for lack of financial transparency by the Tax Justice Network (TJN). The only more secretive country is Switzerland, according to the anti-corruption organization’s 2018 Financial Secrecy Index.

"Democratic Senators OFFICIALLY introduce bill to fix the single most obvious problem w/the ACA" | 06/09/2017 | AUSTERITY & OPPRESSION SUPPORTERS VS THE PROGRESSION Of The REST OF US | Scoop.it
As I've written about more times than I can remember, for all the very real and highly damaging GOP sabotage of the ACA over the years, there are some problems which were, quite frankly, inherent in the law as passed itself. This should be no great revelation, since it is a major piece of legislation which impacts nearly 1/5th of the entire economy is always going to have some problems to deal with, just as the 1.0 version of any piece of software will always have to have updates and patches applied. If this wasn't the case, there wouldn't be any amendments to the U.S. Constitution (not even the 2nd, so beloved by the GOP). In any event, one of the biggest flaws with the ACA itself is that the formula and rules for individual market tax credit eligibility are, quite simply, too stingy. They only apply to those falling within 100-400% of the Federal Poverty Level (roughly $12,000 - $48,000 for a single adult, or $24,000 - $96,000 for a family of 4), Within that income range, subsidies drop off on a sliding scale, based on what percentage of household income the benchmark Silver policy costs. Here's the official chart:

Franklin Delano Williams's curator insight, July 3, 2017 6:31 AM

INSIGHT: "This is a real problem...with an easy solution: Either raise that 400% cap up to, say, 500-600%...or better yet, remove it altogether. This is exactly what I proposed in my "If I Ran the Zoo" compendium of ACA fixes, although to be fair, it's also exactly one of the major fixes Hillary Clinton proposed as part of her campaign platform.

Here's what I had in mind, although the precise percentages and income brackets could obviously be tweaked (Clinton's proposal was actually more generous than mine...she wanted 8.5% of income to be the cut-off point vs. my 10%; I'd be fine with that!):

In any event, until a couple of days ago, to the best of my knowledge, no sitting Democratic Senator or Representative has actually introduced a bill to achieve this change. Sure, there's the full Single Payer bills by John Conyers and Bernie Sanders, and of course the Dems have been clamoring for the GOP to formally appropriate CSR reimbursement payments to carriers...but nothing specifically calling for beefing up the APTC subsidies. Until now:"
