Design your life to include more money, health and happiness with less stuff, space and energy.

 

After reading The Story of Stuff, I'm all for the idea of "editing" life to minimize the most unimportant elements while maximizing the stuff of fun, joy, and beauty. But I can't help thinking, too, that some of that stuff of fun and joy need not be squashed into 300 sqft of living space. Cooking is a prime example. A kitchen that can accomadate wonderful home-prepared meals would be fairly

difficult in close quarters without much counter space. And sure, the kitchen could be designed with moveable parts that expand for use and hide when not in use - but this just ups the probably of these moveable parts breaking...

 

Also underlying the small-space movement is a new-world premise that about having one's own home. Now, having a "room of one's own" feels essential - even knowing that much of the world's population would find even that a luxury. But there are certain features of a home that could easily be shared: the kitchen, shower, common areas, etc. So why not share a home with a great, well-constructed kitchen instead? Or minimize it and have a shared kitchen in the community?

 

The site has many ideas for "sharing systems" that are worth a look. And the "behavior" bits are great as well.
