Now Apple's Manufacturing Is Leaving China

Several stories from around the world indicating that manufacturing might be leaving China. Some of it will be "coming back home", other parts of it going to where labour is even cheaper. Labour cost are rising in asia so it makes manufacturing more expensive. Apple are looking into manufacturing some products in America, but by machines not people.

Arthur Dodson's insight:

If machines are going to be used in the manufacturing then manufactoring abroad will not cut costs but just increase the cost because of the nesescary transportation. People will lose out on jobs in asia which will have a negative impact on those countries.

Lately there have been labour issues at Foxconn, where there have been complaints over labour conditions, with riots and suicides. The president of Foxconn wants to replace the people with robots. Each 'Foxbot', costs upto $25000.

Arthur Dodson's insight:

Initially, this could create jobs, because people have to design the robots and assemble them. But in the long run, many people will lose their job, pepole will have less disposeable income and consumption will fall. The multiplier in the economy may fall because many people have lost their jobs. Can Apple now shift their production to the US, now robots are being used?

Apple Is Breaking Up with Foxconn for a New iPhone Builder with Labor Problems

Apple is looking to break away from its long term manufacturer, Foxconn. This is due to the scandal of poor working conditions in Foxconn factories that has been strongly linked to apple.

Arthur Dodson's insight:

Apple bases a lot of its marketing on its image, and to have bad working conditions and bad media coverage about them is not good. Therefore it could be a good move for them to 'start over' with a new manufacturer, they have been linked with Pegatron. Many people in Foxconn will lose their job however.
