The Guardian Hits Rock Bottom: 'Putin Is a Bigger Threat to Europe Than ISIS'

The Guardian Hits Rock Bottom: 'Putin Is a Bigger Threat to Europe Than ISIS' | Global politics | Scoop.it
The Guardian is really putting in the extra effort this week. Last Tuesday it declared that big, scary things would happen to Europe if Assad (with Russian air support) retakes Aleppo.
Enrique Ferro's insight:

Since the fall of the Soviet Union, US and European "strategists" have been dreaming about carving up Russia and stealing its resources. Russia has never attempted to destabilize Europe -- Soros is just talking out of his cornhole.

Soros never actually juxtaposes ISIS with Russia -- because it's pretty clear which one is a terrorist organization that chops off heads and uses child sex slaves, and which is a normal country with normal people.

Anyway, golf clap for George Soros and the Guardian. Tremendous work, as always.

Lavrov's Munich Q&A With NATO Bootlickers Was Brilliant | Global politics | Scoop.it
The speeches given at yesterday's Munich Security Conference were frankly too depressing and cynical to write about. John Kerry, for example, accused Russia of "repeated aggression" and bombing "legitimate opposition groups" in Syria.

You Won't Believe What This US Ambassador Said About al-Qaeda's Syrian Allies - Antiwar.com Original

You Won't Believe What This US Ambassador Said About al-Qaeda's Syrian Allies - Antiwar.com Original | Global politics | Scoop.it
Robert Ford was US Ambassador to Syria when the revolt against Syrian president Assad was launched. He not only was a chief architect of regime change in Syria, but actively worked with rebels to aid their overthrow of the Syrian government. Ford assured us that those taking up arms to overthrow the Syrian government were …
Enrique Ferro's insight:

Ambassador Ford talked himself blue in the face reassuring us that he was only supporting moderates in Syria. As evidence mounted that the recipients of the largesse doled out by Washington was going to jihadist groups, Ford finally admitted early last year that most of the moderates he backed were fighting alongside ISIS and al-Qaeda. Witness this incredible Twitter exchange with then-ex Ambassador Ford:

Saudi Foreign Minister says Assad will be 'removed from Syria by force' if peace talks fail

Saudi Foreign Minister says Assad will be 'removed from Syria by force' if peace talks fail | Global politics | Scoop.it
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad will be removed by force if the Syrian peace process fails, Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister has said.

"Bashar al-Assad will leave - have no doubt about it" Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told CNN. "He will either leave by a political process or he will be removed by force."
Enrique Ferro's insight:

When will regime change come to Saudi Arabia, the only country on earth to have the name of a ruling family, and probably the most tyrannical of all? And when will Erdogan be removed, the candidate to new Sultan whose provocations are threatening the world war? When shall we get rid of them?

The Real War Against Terror: Former US Allies Now Fighting CIA-Backed Rebels in Syria

The Real War Against Terror: Former US Allies Now Fighting CIA-Backed Rebels in Syria | Global politics | Scoop.it
The latest Michael Weiss hit piece (note that he isn't credited as the author, only as providing "additional reporting") includes a rather remarkable nugget of insight into what's happening in Syria: Iraqi militias who once fought ISIS with US support have joined Russia, Iran and Syria in the fight against "moderate" rebels in Aleppo.
Enrique Ferro's insight:

Why have these Iraqi militias decided to fight against CIA-backed rebels in Syria? It's not because the rebels are Sunni -- the SAA (including its leadership) is full of Sunnis. The likely answer is because the Iraqi militias do not see any difference between ISIS and the "moderate" rebels in Syria.

In other words, the Iraqis have decided to join the real war against terrorism.

Week Eighteen of the Russian Intervention in Syria: A dramatic escalation appears imminent

Week Eighteen of the Russian Intervention in Syria: A dramatic escalation appears imminent | Global politics | Scoop.it
The situation in Syria has reached a watershed moment and a dramatic escalation of the war appears imminent. Let’s look again at how we reached this point. During the first phase of the operation, the Syrian armed forces were unable to achieve an immediate strategic success. This is rather unsurprising. It is important to remember […]
Enrique Ferro's insight:

What is clear is that in any war between Russia and Turkey NATO will have to make a key decision: is the alliance prepared to go to war with a nuclear power like Russia to protect a lunatic like Erdogan? It is hard to imagine the US/NATO doing something so crazy but, unfortunately, wars always have the potential to very rapidly get out of control. Modern military theory has developed many excellent models of escalation but, unfortunately, no good model of how de-escalation could happen (at least not that I am aware of). How does one de-escalate without appearing to be surrendering or at least admitting to being the weaker side?
