A quarter of UK septoria isolates carry SDHI mutations 

The frequency of septoria tritici isolates with mutations that confer reduced sensitivity to SDHIs continues to increase at UK sites. According to early season monitoring work co-funded by AHDB, 26 percent of all isolates gathered and tested carried an SDHI mutation. 

This compares to 15 percent and 0 percent of all isolates tested in a similar period during 2017 and 2016, respectively.

Iraq's state grains board purchased a total of about 100,000 tonnes of hard wheat in a tender which closed last week, European traders said on Monday. 

Some 50,000 tonnes was to be sourced from the United States and 50,000 tonnes from Australia. The U.S. wheat was said to have been bought at $332.17 a tonne c&f free out and the Australian wheat at $309.95 a tonne c&f free out.

Leading agribusiness company Louis Dreyfus Company B.V. (LDC), reported consolidated net sales of US$43.0 billion1 in the fiscal year ended 31 December 2017, with shipped volumes up 5%2 compared to 2016. 

The company’s consolidated income before tax was US$405 million, compared to US$365 million the previous year, including the Metals business, which is in the process of being sold. LDC’s consolidated net income, Group Share, increased to US$317 million, compared to US$305 million at the end of 2016.

Ardent Mills, the premier flour-milling and ingredient company, shared today that it has finalized an agreement to operate the Cargill, Incorporated grain elevator located at the Port of Albany, adjacent to Ardent Mills’ Albany, New York, community mill. 

The approximately 11-million bushel elevator historically has been used to store wheat and other grains. The details of the transaction were not disclosed. According to Ardent Mills Albany Plant Manager Sean Gager, the Albany elevator and associated equipment will add to its capabilities to serve bakeries, food manufacturers, foodservice and retailers across the region, and will support Ardent Mills’ vision of being the trusted partner in nurturing its customers, consumers and communities through innovative and nutritious grain-based solutions. Six existing team members will join Ardent Mills team.

Winter may appear to be reluctant to finish its shift but, through the numerous icy blasts, signs of spring are appearing. One of these signs is the migration of pollen beetle to oilseed rape (OSR) – and an online prediction tool says conditions have been good enough for early migration to occur in some places. 

Pollen beetles are interesting bugs: not only are they highly visible but they also don’t often deserve to be awarded ‘pest’ status. In recent years, in fact, pollen beetles have rarely been abundant enough to warrant treatment, even if seen at the damage-susceptible ‘green-yellow bud’ stage.
