US-Russian discord over Syria stoked by Turkey’s downing of the Russian warplane

US-Russian discord over Syria stoked by Turkey’s downing of the Russian warplane | Global Conflict | Scoop.it
The Russian-Turkish clash over the downing of the SU-29 by Turkish warplanes Tuesday, Nov. 24, has sharply ramped up the personal head-on-head between the US and Russian Presidents Obama and Putin over the fate of Bashar Assad. Obama maintains that the Syria war can’t end and ISIS can’t be defeated so long as Assad remains in power, whereas Putin counters that neither goal can be achieved if Assad goes. US-led NATO and Russian warships are about to come into dangerous proximity in the waters off Syria.
Abraham Erickson's insight:

That's quite the military hardware gathering in the Eastern Mediterranean, wouldn't you agree?

China Announces Military Overhaul to Make Army More Combat Ready | Global Conflict | Scoop.it
President Xi Jinping announced a major overhaul of China’s military to make the world’s largest army more combat ready and better equipped to project force beyond the country’s borders.
Abraham Erickson's insight:

The world will be very different by 2020. "The reform shakes the very foundations of China’s Soviet Union-style military system and transferring to a U.S. style joint command structure will transform China’s PLA into a specialized armed force that could pack more of a punch in the world."

Russia Deploys Warship Off Syrian Coast To "Destroy Any Threats To Russian Planes" | Zero Hedge

Russia Deploys Warship Off Syrian Coast To "Destroy Any Threats To Russian Planes" | Zero Hedge | Global Conflict | Scoop.it
Despite demands from France's Hollande, America's Obama, and NATO's Stoltenberg that this situation not esclate, it appears Putin is not taking the shooting down of a fighter jet lying down. The seemingly cagey confirmation by NATO and Obama of Turkey's claims that Russia invaded its airspace has been rebuked by Russia which claims the Hmeimim airbase radar shows the attacking Turkish plane violating Syrian airspace. In response, Russia is moving a Cruiser 'Moskva' off the coast to strengthen air-defenses - just as French and US carriers are on their way.
Abraham Erickson's insight:

Escalation continues in this deadly tit-for-tat between the West and Putin. Russia will strike in the opportune moment. How will NATO respond then?

EU agrees co-ordinated withdrawal of ambassadors from Iran — RT | Global Conflict | Scoop.it

This could mean two things: First, and definitely a desired outcome, is that the Iranian will be more and more isolated; Second, is the preparation for an overt military attack? Also, with Iran becoming more isolated from the West, the Iranians will seek to strengthen their ties with Russia and China, which will also hurt the West in the long-term, for sure. -- Iran may lose all posted EU ambassadors as European countries begin recalling their embassy staff from the country. According to French FM Alain Juppe, Europe will act in a response to the attacks on the British diplomatic missions in Tehran.
