Introduction to MEPDG Flexible Pavement Design (3 PDHs)

Most of the current pavement design methods including the AASHTO pavement design are empirical-based. This means that they were developed based on an old field experiment with limited local pavement materials, one specific environmental condition, and limited traffic loads. Although these pavement design methods have been used by many highway agencies, they do not design pavements for other pavement materials and environmental conditions accurately. A Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) has been developed in the USA under the NCHRP 1-37A in 2004 to address shortcomings in the current pavement design methods. This Guide incorporates latest pavement knowledge and experiences, which were developed during the last 50 years.
Many highway agencies have plans to implement the MEPDG as their pavement design method. Implementation of the MEPDG requires training, data collection, and local calibration/validation of performance models in MEPDG.

Decision making is a process of choosing among alternative courses of action for the purpose of attaining a goal or goals. This is an important matter for managerial functions. What should be done? When? How? Where? By whom? Do you do it alone? Do you involve others? Do you let others make the decisions? Some people just aren't good at making decisions. Other people can snap to a judgment with almost no information at all. But why? What is it in our minds that help us choose between conflicting options? Is it possible to structure and define some process to be a good decision maker?Problem Solving and Decision Making are two interchangeable terms. A problem occurs when a system does not meet its established goals, does not yield the predicted results, or does not operate as initially intended.
Early identification of a problem will allow more time to develop a well thought-out solution. It may be less costly to solve a problem and to reduce its impact on other parts when the problem is identified early.

Requirement of Materials by Piping Code ASME B31.3 Chapter III in a Process Plant (3 PDHs)

Code requirements for design and construction include fluid service requirements, which affect selection and application of materials. The code sets limitations and qualification of materials based on their inherent properties.

The selection of materials is often set by and under the control of Engineers and personnel from Quality who, although qualified in their own discipline, may not have received formal Material or Mechanical Engineering training. To be effective, Engineers and Technicians should have a fundamental understanding of the principles that dictate the requirement of materials by the Construction Code.

This 3 hour course is designed to meet the needs of Mechanical Engineers, Material Engineers, QA/QC Personnel and Inspectors from Design, Construction and Owner Companies. It is an excellent course for young engineers to get an overview of how materials are classified, specified, and how fluid service and temperature impact the selection.

Hydrostatic and Pneumatic Testing of a Piping System with Vessels to ASME B31.3 Code (3 PDHs)

Pressure Testing is part of the start-up and commissioning phase of a plant prior to initial operation. It is usually done by the construction companies. The pressure testing is often under the control of Engineers, Technicians and personnel from Quality and Safety who, although qualified in their own discipline, may not have received formal Mechanical Engineering training. To be effective, Engineers, Technicians and personnel of all disciplines should have a fundamental understanding of the principles that dictate the requirement of testing by the Construction Code and the risks involved with it. Special emphasis will be given to pneumatic testing, which is not normally encountered in a plant but which involves greater risks to the safety of plant and personnel when faced with one.

This 3 hour course is designed to meet the needs of Engineers, Technicians and personnel of all disciplines (Quality, Safety and Process/Production) from Design, Construction and Owner Companies.

The testing requirements will be based on ASME B31.3 Code.
