Eduardo Camina Paniagua's curator insight, November 26, 2013 11:45 AM

Asier Sanado Bonafonte's curator insight, December 1, 2013 7:15 AM

GMO Dangers - FDA scientists warned but were ignored...

GMO Dangers - FDA scientists warned but were ignored... | Gestión | Scoop.it

Genetically modified foods… Are they safe? The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) doesn’t think so.

The Academy reported that “Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food,” including infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, faulty insulin regulation, and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system. The AAEM asked physicians to advise patients to avoid GM foods.

Before the FDA decided to allow GMOs into food without labeling, FDA scientists had repeatedly warned that GM foods can create unpredictable, hard-to-detect side effects, including allergies, toxins, new diseases, and nutritional problems.

They urged long-term safety studies, but were ignored.

This seems like a repeat of the Aspartame story. FDA scientists warned about Aspartame safety as well, and were ignored when Rumsfeld brought his political weight to bear.

It seems that science is only given attention when it's convenient and is ignored when there are business interests to protect.

Aldo Compains Urtasun's insight:

Aldo Compains Urtasun's insight:

Alba Redin's curator insight, October 20, 2013 11:06 AM

Estibaliz Undiano Hernandez's curator insight, November 17, 2013 7:44 AM

Pesticide/Chemical Regulation Overhaul Needed to Protect Wildlife, Ecosystems, Food Chain and Human Health

Pesticide/Chemical Regulation Overhaul Needed to Protect Wildlife, Ecosystems, Food Chain and Human Health | Gestión | Scoop.it

May 1, 2013 Earth Justice, San Francisco, CA —

▶  The National Research Council today issued a report finding that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) must do more to ensure that pesticides do not harm threatened and endangered fish and wildlife.

Among the report's, Assessing Risks to Endangered and Threatened Species from Pesticides recommendations are that EPA more broadly account for pesticides’ direct and indirect harm to wildlife—including harm that is not immediately lethal, and impacts to food supply and habitat—and better consider the combined effects of exposure to multiple pesticides mixing in the environment....

The report’s recommendations will help Pacific salmon populations impacted by the approximately 200 million pounds of pesticides applied on the West Coast every year.... http://earthjustice.org/news/press/2013/pesticide-regulation-overhaul-needed-to-protect-wildlife-from-pesticides

Pau Monzón's curator insight, December 14, 2014 11:36 AM

Elizabeth Holmes dropped out of Stanford and founded a company called Theranos with her tuition money. Now, instead of vials of blood, Theranos requires only a pinprick and a drop of blood.

With that they can perform hundreds of tests, from standard cholesterol checks to sophisticated genetic analyses. The results are faster, more accurate, and far cheaper than conventional methods.

The implications are mind-blowing. With inexpensive and easy access to the information running through their veins, people will have an unprecedented window on their own health.

The main aims of REACH are to ensure a high level of protection of human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals, the promotion of alternative test methods, the free circulation of substances on the internal market and enhancing competitiveness and innovation.

Iranzu González Borja's curator insight, November 29, 2013 5:18 PM

Paula Olaizola's curator insight, November 22, 2014 3:12 PM

Utah biotech firm to argue its patents on breast and ovarian cancer genes are necessary to fund further research

-

The US supreme court will hear oral arguments next week to decide whether companies can patent human genes, in a landmark case which could alter the course of US medical research and the battle against diseases such as breast and ovarian cancer.

A coalition of scientists, cancer survivors, patients, breast cancer groups and professional medical associations, which has brought the case, will argue that genes are "products of nature", like organs of the body and should not be exploited for commercial gain.

Such patents are illegal and violate the first amendment, they say. They are challenging patents on two genes linked to breast and ovarian cancer owned by Myriad Genetics, a biotechnology company, because they say the patents have stymied research and the free exchange of ideas.

Myriad, based in Salt Lake City, Utah, will ask the court to uphold the patents, which it says is vital compensation for developing a potentially life-saving test to asses the risks of breast and ovarian cancer and to advance medicine. Myriad's BRACAnalysis test looks for mutations on the breast cancer predisposition gene, or BRCA.

In March 2010, a New York district court agreed with an American Civil Liberties Union challenge to Myriad's patents on "isolated" forms of BRCA1 and BRCA2, by arguing that genes should not be patented. But the US Court of Appeals for the federal court has now ruled twice that the isolated genes patented in Myriad's case has a "markedly different chemical structure" from DNA within the body.

Breast Cancer Action, one of the plaintiffs in the case, said that the patents has meant that Myriad has become "the gatekeeper of all research on the BRCA gene".

Aldo Compains Urtasun's insight:

Genetically Modified Labels: The debate over labelling GMOs

Genetically Modified Labels: The debate over labelling GMOs | Gestión | Scoop.it

s You see more labels in stores that tell you whether a food is “Non-GMO.”  In other words, that it does not contain anything that’s been genetically modified.  Right now, there is a push in the state of Florida and across the country to require...

Aldo Compains Urtasun's insight:

Aldo Compains Urtasun's insight:
