NOVA IMS's USGIF GEOINT Certification

NOVA IMS's USGIF GEOINT Certification | Geo & OS Intelligence | Scoop.it

"The Geospatial Intelligence Certificate, accredited by the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF) provides education and training in scientific concepts, methods and key geospatial technologies, used in the solution of global problems of human security, including natural disasters, humanitarian crisis, environmental risks, military operations, political violence, public health and challenges in access to food.

USGIF’s purpose is to promote the geospatial intelligence tradecraft and to develop a stronger community of interest between government, industry, academia, professional organizations and individuals. USGIF is the only organization providing Higher Education accreditation in the GEOINT domain, being a world leader in this field.

In order to obtain the GEOINT Certificate, students will have to:

- Be enrolled in the following course units: Geographic Information Systems and Science, Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT), GIS Applications, GIS Modelling, Remote Sensing;

- Enroll in other elective course units to complete the remaining 22,5 ECTS;

- Deliver a Scientific Thesis/Work Project/Internship Report, in Geospatial Intelligence."

A geographic feature by any other name would just be confusing

A geographic feature by any other name would just be confusing | Geo & OS Intelligence | Scoop.it
West Africa experienced the worst Ebola outbreak in history a little over three years ago, resulting in approximately 11,325 deaths. Personnel from numerous U.S. government agencies were immediately deployed to assist in the area, but the maps they had access to were outdated. That’s when the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency was called in to assist.

From their desks in Springfield, Virginia, a group of NGA human geography linguists leapt into action, updating the Geographic Names Database with names and features in the West African area, particularly Sierra Leone and Liberia. The GNDB is the official database for all standardized foreign geographic names.

This Esri map shows all satellites in orbit

This Esri map shows all satellites in orbit | Geo & OS Intelligence | Scoop.it
There are about 1,400 satellites up in space orbiting Earth monitoring the planet from their vantage point. But the space around Earth is actually crowded with tons of things — from artificial satellites (amateur and serious science missions) to orbital debris. According to NASA, there are more than 500,000 pieces of space junk in the space. The Department of Defense’s US Space Surveillance Network tracks discrete objects as small as 5 cm in diameter in low Earth orbit and about 1 meter in geosynchronous orbit.

What is Remote Sensing? The Definitive Guide to Earth Observation

What is Remote Sensing? The Definitive Guide to Earth Observation | Geo & OS Intelligence | Scoop.it
Remote sensing is the science of obtaining information without physically being there. For example, the 3 most common remote sensing methods is by airplane, satellite and drone.

So how is remote sensing solving some of our most challenging problems on Earth? And how does remote sensing go above and beyond human vision to capture Earth’s features?

From weather forecasting to military intelligence, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Advanced Machine Learning with Basic Excel - Data Science Central

Advanced Machine Learning with Basic Excel - Data Science Central | Geo & OS Intelligence | Scoop.it
In this article, I present a few modern techniques that have been used in various business contexts, comparing performance with traditional methods. The advanced techniques in question are math-free, innovative, efficiently process large amounts of unstructured data, and are robust and scalable. Implementations in Python, R, Julia and Perl are provided, but here we focus on an Excel version that does not even require any Excel macros, coding, plug-ins, or anything other than the most basic version of Excel. It is actually easily implemented in standard, basic SQL too, and we invite  readers to work on an SQL version.

Smartphones Are Weapons of Mass Manipulation, and This Guy Is Declaring War on Them

Smartphones Are Weapons of Mass Manipulation, and This Guy Is Declaring War on Them | Geo & OS Intelligence | Scoop.it

"If, like an ever-growing majority of people in the U.S., you own a smartphone, you might have the sense that apps in the age of the pocket-sized computer are designed to keep your attention as long as possible. You might not have the sense that they’re manipulating you one tap, swipe, or notification at a time.

But Tristan Harris thinks that’s just what’s happening to the billions of us who use social networks like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter, and he’s on a mission to steer us toward potential solutions—or at least to get us to acknowledge that this manipulation is, in fact, going on."

America’s intelligence agencies find creative ways to compete for talent

AMERICA’S intelligence agencies are struggling to attract and retain talent. Leon Panetta, a former Pentagon and CIA boss, says this is “a developing crisis”. Barbs from President Donald Trump have chipped away at the prestige of work that some consider already tarnished by leaks and the belief that “enhanced interrogations” is another way of saying torture. The backlog of people waiting for a security clearance approval or renewal has swollen to 700,000 or so, with an average waiting time of well over a year. Many applicants simply give up

US wants first drones that can kill people truly independently

US wants first drones that can kill people truly independently | Geo & OS Intelligence | Scoop.it
The US Army wants to develop small drones to automatically spot, identify and target vehicles and people. It may allow faster responses to threats, but it could also be a step towards autonomous drones that attack targets without human oversight.

The project will use machine-learning algorithms, such as neural networks, to equip drones as small as consumer quadcopters with artificial intelligence. Current military drones have little onboard intelligence, sending raw video back to analysts

Bird Migration Patterns - Western Hemisphere Dataset | Science On a Sphere | Geo & OS Intelligence | Scoop.it
This dataset shows the migration of 118 species of terrestrial bird populations in the Western Hemisphere. Each dot represents the estimated location of the center of each species’ population for each day of the year. These estimations come from millions of observations from the eBird citizen-science database. eBird is a real-time, online checklist program, launched in 2002 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, that allows birdwatchers to enter their observations.

A Monumental Success

A Monumental Success | Geo & OS Intelligence | Scoop.it
“What’s the point of geolocating missile launches?” you might ask.  Almost all of our analyses start with the simple act of putting a place to picture or a video.  “Where did this happen?”  Place seems like an obvious, well, place to start.  But sometimes it is hard to explain why that is.

Today, though, I have a really good example of how geolocation can yield a cultural or psychological insight.  By geolocating  the precise location of North Korea’s ICBM test in November, we also get a glimpse into how Kim Jong Un and other leaders in North Korea think about nuclear weapons.

Fibonacci and the Golden Ratio: Divine Geometry?

Fibonacci and the Golden Ratio: Divine Geometry? | Geo & OS Intelligence | Scoop.it
Phi (Φ,φ) –the golden number or Fibonacci’s number– is a very familiar concept, and one that has been studied by mathematicians of all ages. Nor is it unknown to lovers of art, biology, architecture, music, botany and finance, for example. You’re very likely to have come across it in any of these disciplines. Does this mean it’s possible to find a numerical translation for everything we see, hear or build around us? Perhaps the closest answer to this question is the phrase by Plato that opens this article.

Worried about Strava? It’s not the only app mapping our every move | Keza MacDonald | Opinion | The Guardian | Geo & OS Intelligence | Scoop.it
It was a great PR move: in November fitness tracking company Strava launched an updated global heatmap that visualised all the location data that its users had been collectively broadcasting, revealing popular running spots around the world. It is a fascinating visual, but it accidentally pinpointed the location and layout of secret military bases where fitness-conscious soldiers had been running around with their fitness trackers or phones. Whoops.
