Matthew Connealy's curator insight, March 24, 2015 7:36 AM

The one child policy was implemented in 1979, and has decreased the birthrates from 4.77 in the 70's to 1.64 in 2011. The death of these children has a cultural impact on the parents because when they grow old, they need to rely on them for financial support. If they disobey this rule, they are heavily fined and often lose their job and everything they have. This article highlights a Chinese family that goes through the struggles and pain of losing their son at 23, and an interview is conducted about how their life is looking today.

This policy sure certainly works, but it might be working too good. I feel the policy is harsh and a bit unnecessary due to the imposing restrictions on families in China. The government says they are thinking about making the policy more lenient, but we'll have to wait and see what happens as over 1 million parents have already lost their children in China. This topic covers the national population policies on the syllabus.
