Geography Education

As a Social Science teacher and Librarian I urge you to support Geography in our school curriculum.

Interesting to see the huge difference in funding for arts vs. geography. I applaud Prof. Dixon for advocating and fighting for what he is passionate about. Hopefully this gains popularity and he can get support from these political officials.

This is sad.

This is a good read for anyone who is going to be a social studies teacher. 

I am not sure that I would recommend this in my classroom but all teachers can benefit from this. 

He introduces geography as a way to connect with the world. Learning geography adds perspective and insight into the rest of the world. In geography we can pose thought provoking questions to students that gets them to start thinking differently than they do now. 

This image communicates the importance of agriculture and marketplace relativity. in an area where transportation is minimal and people happen to be more more poorer then need to supply needed resources in a timely manner is very important. Farmers and resource providers need to be close enough geographically. This image shows an outside clothing and food market were people get to shop around and choose in a convientent ways there most needed items. The umbrella suggests rain as the child and other shoppers are being covered. This outdoor market doesnt necessarily suggest poverty but a wide range of population given a convenient location to buy goods quikcly and efficiently. The market may be located in a urban downtown area or also a village central area. Regardless the location, and goods provided shows the valuable commodities need to be provided in a manner, freshest possible for delivery.

It is said that locally grown food can have more nutritional value than organic if the latter comes from thousands of miles away. If you had to choose, which would you rather have, locally grown or organic? 

Summery: This article shares the importance and relevance of the Von Thunen model, even in modern agriculture. It also touches on urban population demands and how it effects the size of the Von Thunen model, bring the last level much closer to the city center. 

Insight: I think that with urban demands of fresh foods, it is absolutely correct to have to shift the Von Thunen model. Of course, in its time the model was correct, but with the growing agribusiness, it's no longer 100% accurate. 

students need to be very careful in the type of sources that they used to glean information. People can manipulate photos and suggest things as fact when they are completetly made up. It is understandable that Wikipedia can not be used as an entireyl reliable source because people have access to add whatever they want to the content matter. Photoshop and other online tools can be used to trick people into beleiving certain things. This photo claiming to be from ireland is really from Thailand is a small island but the castle itself on the top os photoshoped and the image was retweeded like crazy within the first hor. wee must check our sources and make sure that we are getting good primary or at least good secondary services from legit websites.

This just shows that you can't believe everything you see on the internet. In this picture it is said to be of an island in Ireland but in reality it is in Thailand. People believe what they want to believe.

Before reading this article, I assumed that I was capable of telling fictional from factual information apart. But now, after having my eyes opened, I realize that the internet can truly play you like a puppet. From this article, I've now learned that there are more ways than one to judge the authenticity of a site. one such way is to search for an "original" copy of whatever it may be that you're researching. If none pop up, you have the true article.

Alex Trebek explains the importnace of geography. Its not all about memorizing where things are, its understanding how and why location has such an impact on history, economy and politics.

This is what ive been saying forever! Schools are leaving Geography out! Lets bring out some fun exciting Geography lessons (e.g. Geocaching, Find the box, geography posters, water testing, daily weather checks, even as simple as what to wear today for K-2nd.) Geography is coming back in Mrs. Jessica's Class ASAP!

Great site - showing locational context is important for not just Geography but every subject. How can we understand the complexities of topics like conflict or urban economies or agricultural histories.... without understanding locations and maps?

It was nice to see where everything was happening. I hope it gets updated to more current events. I wish we had something like this when we were looking at the invasion of Kuwait.

Seth Dixon uses ArgGIS to juxtapose maps with the location a video is associated with. 

This idea has crossed my mind before. Now, a video can be contemplated with the spatial accuracy needed. This connects events to a place, and can help students more fully grasp the geospatial distribution of events. 

A geography night brings a subject to an interesting focus for students and parents, having interactive playful resources to teach kids about the world around them. They can play parents can ask teachers questions and it overall encourages interest in a subject that may seem complex and difficult to understand at times.With all the dicsiplines of geography that exist it is important to glean a foundational awareness of the world around you, to use as a springboard for the other aspects. These after school events and the fun involved will defintley help the student have a more open mind to learning, information that is practical but somewhat difficult to understand.

Geospatial awarness and application is important GIS Day allows people to learn about and plug in to present technology that helps make geopraphy more palpable and easier to understand. There are more and more resources and advancements that have been made available to teach us and simply things in the world around us. understanding relatability and awareness helps us to answer questions about geography that we might not know because of distance and allows those who are preparing to be social studies or history majors to communicate to their students a better understanding of the world around them, and as time passes more helpful resources will be teaching aides in the classroom

This is a great video and sa reminder of how we should be approaching our teaching of the Australian Curriculum. 

In this video, Seth Dixon demonstrates a profound knowledge of geographical concepts . More importantly, it's his delivery and approach to teaching those concepts.
