Darwin, Race and Religion in Australia

Darwin, Race and Religion in Australia | Geography | Scoop.it

The concept of race has received unusual public attention recently, as Andrew Bolt defended himself against charges of racial vilification.Ron Merkel, for the prosecution, accused Bolt of harking back to the racial attitudes of the 1930s, which fuelled the eugenics movement and ultimately the Holocaust. What was learned from those horrors, Merkel argued, was that "race is a loose concept and it overlaps with nationality and ethnic identity." Merkel is right that the early twentieth-century saw an evil flowering of "scientific" racism in the form of eugenics movements. But this form of racism has a much longer history. In Australia, as elsewhere, the story of race has much to do with both religion and the theory of evolution.

I’M NOT A RACIST, BUT…

I’M NOT A RACIST, BUT… | Geography | Scoop.it
Racism is one of Australia’s worst-kept secrets. If you scratch a little deeper beneath our white sand and easy-going attitude you can find ugly, hateful feelings of resentment from otherwise seemingly ordinary people.

Give Racism The Finger (Australia)

Give Racism The Finger (Australia) | Geography | Scoop.it

This is a new campaign launched in May in Australia. Give Racism The Finger is the first national campaign to erase racism in Australia. The campaign was devised by All Together Now, a new not-for-profit organisation, after its founder discovered 2 recent studies. One that revealed 1 in 5 Australians had been a victim of racial abuse at some time in their life and another that indicated that 1 in 7 Australians was a victim of racial abuse in 2010. From 16 May, The Body Shop customers in Australia were asked to Give Racism The Finger by dipping their finger in ink and making their mark on a canvas in the store. By doing so, they will be making a commitment to speak up when they witness racism. They will receive a postcard which explains the benefits of bystander action. The campaign ran until 12 June. Priscilla Brice-Weller, Founder and Managing Director, All Together Now: “Every person in Australia has a responsibility to prevent racism by speaking up when they witness racism. When you speak up, you feel better knowing that you’ve taken a stand, and the person on the receiving end will feel less disturbed by the abuse. It will also demonstrate to those participating in racist acts that their behaviour will not be tolerated.”
The question I have is what happens once these campaigns have 'ended'? There needs to be a more sustainable approach, within schools, government institutions and communities. It would help if our politicians understood the anti-racism framework and listened to experts involved in sociology and critical race analysis. There is much work to be done if Australians do not wish to go down the path of many Europeans countries. (Comment by CSullivan)
