Microfinancing Opens Entreprenuism To African Women | Gender Inequality | Scoop.it
Namono Lakeri, a widow and mother of five in Uganda, used a $125 Women's Microfinance Initiative loan to expand her second-hand clothing business. The business generated enough money to send her children to school and allowed her to buy things that she had considered luxuries before, like milk for tea.

A global goal on gender equality, women's rights and empowerment

A global goal on gender equality, women's rights and empowerment | Gender Inequality | Scoop.it
Even though women have made real gains, we are constantly reminded how far we have to go to realise equality between men and women
Leysha Clark's insight:

I chose this article because it talks about promoting more of gender inequality  and women's empowerment. Mainly in Bangladesh and Cambodia, women and girls are not treated fairly. In garment factory work places, mostly women died.

I chose this article because it talks about how we can resolve the problem of female infanticide. I feel it relates to half the sky because its gives us ways we can help women out and stop killing baby girls just because they are girls.

Stop Funding Sweatshops with Taxpayer Money

Stop Funding Sweatshops with Taxpayer Money | Gender Inequality | Scoop.it
The U.S. government continues to source many of its uniforms from sweatshops with abusive working conditions overseas. The U.S. must end its financial support for child labor and sweatshops.
Leysha Clark's insight:

I chose this article because it talks about the poor conditions of sweatshops and ow the U.S. government is actually funding these sweatshops, which is keeping them in business. The U.S government paying funding these sweatshops for the making of their uniforms is like they are supporting the poor conditions of child labor. I agree with this article that the funding should stop

Easy prey: The sexual exploitation of Syria's female refugees

Easy prey: The sexual exploitation of Syria's female refugees | Gender Inequality | Scoop.it
Nawar is a shy 17-year-old with very pale skin, just like her sister Souza, who is 16. Four months ago, both were married off to much older Saudi Arabian men. But after 20 days, the men disappeared.
Leysha Clark's insight:

This article is related to Half the Sky because in HTS , it talks about how females are exploited in many ways, esp sexually. Two teenage girls were married off, not just to men a few years older than them, but a man who was about to be middle aged. This is sexual exploitation. These men take advantage of the poor and use their children to their own use. When they were married off, a few days later the men just disappeared. They promised the girls a better life, but instead they left the girls wondering where their husband's have gone. It seems as if the girls' parents had a good reason behind giving them to older men. They thought it would give them a better life than what they had in Syria. They had very little and were promised money, which is something that they didn't have. Their parents thought that their girls would be offered protection, financially and physically. What they didn't know was that they had been taken advantage of and their girls would soon be left alone.
