State must strengthen domestic violence laws

State must strengthen domestic violence laws | Gender and Crime | Scoop.it
In 2014, there were 91,147 domestic violence victims in our state. Of those, more than 26,000 victims were located in Wayne County. There's no doubt that Michigan has a domestic violence epidemic on its hands.

To make matters worse, our laws and sentencing guidelines haven’t been updated in years. Once considered a leader in domestic violence protections, our state has now fallen significantly behind the rest of the country. Michigan has lagged behind long enough.

Japan's Treatment of Women: We’re busy. Get an abortion | Gender and Crime | Scoop.it
The worst examples involve bosses urging pregnant women to have abortions. One woman who now works for Matahara Net landed a prized “career-track” job at a big bank alongside her boyfriend, who worked in another department. After she became pregnant, a manager told her he would “crush” both her own career and that of her boyfriend if she went ahead and had the baby. In 2011 she took the hint and had an abortion.

  • This report from the Resolution Foundation covers who gains - it includes coverage of the gender gap.
  • The NLW is expected to boost the wages of three-in-ten (29 per cent) female employees by 2020, compared with 18 per cent of men.
  • We estimate that this will have a modest impact on the mean gender pay gap, speeding up the pace at which it narrows by up to one-fifth.
  • Yet, despite more women being affected, on average they will receive smaller cash gains in 2020 (£690 annually) than men (£860 annually). This is because more women than men work part time, leaving them with smaller annual gains.

This is actually something I discussed a while back with a friend of mine who is from Russia, how there is such a huge lack of marriageable men that women there consider being a mail order bride a good alternative to spinsterhood.

My evil dad: Life as a serial killer’s daughter - BBC News

My evil dad: Life as a serial killer’s daughter - BBC News | Gender and Crime | Scoop.it
Keith Jesperson is notorious in the US as the Happy Face Killer, who raped and murdered eight women in the 1990s. Here his daughter, Melissa Moore, describes how she learned the truth as a teenager - and eventually found a way to live with it.
Let me tell you about the last time I saw my dad before he was sent to prison. I was 15 years old when he showed up randomly at our home in Spokane, Washington State. He and my mother were divorced, and we just saw him occasionally, when he fitted us in with his job as a long-distance truck-driver.
On this particular day, in autumn 1994, he asked me and my younger brother and sister if we wanted to go out for breakfast with him. We all hopped into his big truck, which had a sleeper cab attached to it. My sister and I sat in the sleeper cab on top of the mattress and my brother sat in the passenger seat.
After we set off, my brother opened the glove compartment and found a pack of cigarettes. He was really shocked because smoking was a big no-no for my dad - that had always been something he wanted to instil in us. And he said, "Oh those are for my friends, for women that I pick up." My brother pulled a face like he didn't really believe him, as if to say: "Dad, are you hiding something from us? Maybe you're a closet smoker
