Quick Aputure DEC LensRegain vs Metabones Speedbooster S Version Test 4K GH4 XEEN Cinema Prime

Via ChesseyCam

"Both of these adapters offer a wider field of view when used with smaller sensor cameras (i.e. Micro Four-Thirds cameras or Sony E-Mount). Since they concentrate more light to your sensor, all of your lenses will end up having faster apertures as well. For instance my Canon EF 100mm F/2.8L Macro shows as an F/2.0 when using the DEC LensRegain. The test was using a GH4 and an 85mm XEEN Cinema Prime shot in 4K. As you can see the Metabones Speedbooster 'S' Version achieves a wider field of view over the DEC LensRegain. But the adapter is about $650 US Dollars (here). I'm not exactly sure, but the Aputure DEC LensRegain may list for around $500.

metabones_mb_spef_m43_bt4_canon_ef_micro_4_3_t_1438014030000_1158844 Metabones Speedbooster S Version EF - M43 Lens Adapter Besides the slight difference in field of view, the Aputure DEC LensRegain in my opinion performed very well. Lines look straight, image seemed sharp from middle to corners. There's a good number of cheap focal reducers on the market that can't seem to get the optics right. I can't say it's any better than the Metabones Speedbooster S Version, but I can say that the DEC LensRegain performed far better than some cheap adapters i've tried.

Film Cyfrowy take first look at the Nebula 4200 brushless gimbal with spring arms

Film Cyfrowy take first look at the Nebula 4200 brushless gimbal with spring arms | GearJones - Digital Filmmaking Gear & Tips | Scoop.it
We first saw the Filmpower Nebula 4200 brushless gimbal at the BIRTV show in Beijing earlier this year. Designed for DSLRs, mirrorless and small video cameras, it has a unique mechanical spring arm suspension system that tries to eliminate small unwanted vertical movements when you walk with the device. The grip of the 4200 is interchangeable and you can also fit a single handgrip that makes it look more like a larger version of the original Nebula 4000. When we saw it in China it was a non-working prototype. Ever since we have been eager to see just how well it actually works.

We still haven’t had a chance to test it ourselves, but Tomasz Wolski of Film Cyfrowy has been lucky enough to get one of the first production models. He gave us his thoughts after several days of testing:

RedShark News - RED's big surprise: the new 5K SCARLET-W

RedShark News - RED's big surprise: the new 5K SCARLET-W | GearJones - Digital Filmmaking Gear & Tips | Scoop.it
The new RED SCARLET-W captures 5K at 60 frames per second, 4K at 150 fps and 2K at 300 fps with REDCODE RAW. ProRes recording is limited to 2K. The "BRAIN" is $9,950 and a complete package is around $14,500. (The RED RAVEN, for comparison starts at $5,950 for the BRAIN, and $9,750 for full packages.

So it seems that the new camera sits in between the WEAPON and the RAVEN, with the WEAPON offering even higher resolutions - effectively the top-end camera, and the RAVEN with it's recently-upgraded-to-4.5K sensor being pitched and use with drones and motorised, stabilised gimbals (although not exclusively so).
Derek Allen's insight:

RED Press Release:

RED DIGITAL CINEMA ANNOUNCES THE INDUSTRY-CHANGING 5K SCARLET-W CAMERA SCARLET-W, THE NEWEST ADDITION TO THE RED DRAGON® FAMILY, DEMONSTRATES RED’S ONGOING COMMITMENT TO MAKING SUPERIOR IMAGE QUALITY ACCESSIBLE TO PROFESSIONALS EVERYWHERE

IRVINE, CA – December 10, 2015. Today, RED Digital Cinema unveiled the latest addition to its line of professional cameras, the SCARLET-W. Joining the RED RAVEN and WEAPON® in the latest generation of RED cameras, the SCARLET-W is a versatile, feature-rich, and intuitive option for professional shooters.

SCARLET-W offers a RED DRAGON sensor, interchangeable lens mounts, simultaneous recording in REDCODE® RAW and Apple ProRes formats, an intelligent OLPF system, and in-camera 3D-LUT outputs. At just $9,950 for the camera BRAIN® and $14,500 for the complete Base I/O V-Lock Package, SCARLET-W delivers unparalleled flexibility, accessibility and performance.

SCARLET-W captures 5K at 60 frames per second (fps), 4K at 150 fps, or 2K at 300 fps with REDCODE RAW; and its wide dynamic range produces cinema-quality images rich with natural color. SCARLET-W also offers an upgrade path to WEAPON and uses the DSMC2TM line of accessories— compatible with both RED RAVEN and WEAPON cameras—giving shooters the option to move between camera systems without having to purchase all new gear.

“When we began shipping the 4K RED ONE in 2007, it did nothing short of disrupting the camera industry with an unheard of blend of performance and price,” says Jarred Land, President of Red Digital Cinema. “And we are doing it again—meet the 5K SCARLET-W. It is a perfect storm of image quality, intuitive design, and accessibility."

SCARLET-W comes on the heels of the recent 4.5K RED RAVEN announcement, and is the latest example of RED’s ongoing commitment to the belief that cinema-quality creative tools should not be in the hands of a few—they should be available to a wide spectrum of content creators. RED RAVEN is RED’s most compact and lightweight camera priced at $5,950 for the BRAIN only, with full packages starting at $9,750. Customers that have placed RED RAVEN pre-orders can easily change to a SCARLET-W pre-order.

SCARLET-W is estimated to begin shipping in February 2016, and deposits will be accepted beginning today. Customers will be given a choice of purchasing the BRAIN only to build a kit that best fits their needs or choosing the SCARLET-W Base I/O V-Lock Package, which offers everything content creators need to start taking their productions to the next level.

Hands-On Video Review: Shape Extension Handle for the Sony FS7

by Nino Leitner (website) | 14th April 2016 The Sony FS7 is a very popular camera which comes in a shoulder-mount shape and form, straight out of the box, which often isn’t the case with cameras that didn’t get the third party rigging treatment.

However, the built-in shoulder pad and handle aren’t perfect. The shoulder pad can’t be moved much to adjust for different balance points depending on the type of lens you use – a movable baseplate with built-in shoulder rig is required. Many manufacturers, including Shape, have come up with great solutions. My current baseplate of choice is the Zacuto Recoil baseplate for the FS7.

The handle is another story – while the shape of the grip is actually perfect for larger hands like mine, the handle itself has always felt like something that was built before the design was perfected. The two big issues: a thumbscrew to attach the angle of the handle is cumbersome to operate while you have the camera on your shoulder, and having to use a screwdriver for the adjustment of the length of the handle is a downright usability nightmare.

Canadian camera accessory maker Shape discovered this problem early on (and yes, this product has already been on the market for a while, but I just found it too good not to cover!). They made a replacement part for the upper part of the handle that gives you a push-button adjustment of the handle angle plus a thumbscrew for the length adjustment. And just like that, it becomes something you don’t want to miss from your FS7 ever again.

For the rest of the story, visit https://www.cinema5d.com/hands-on-video-review-shape-fs7-extension-handle/

2016 is the Year of the Super 8 Revival

2016 is the Year of the Super 8 Revival | GearJones - Digital Filmmaking Gear & Tips | Scoop.it
Derek Allen's insight:
At CES in Las Vegas, Kodak has kicked off its Super 8 Revival Initiative with a display of an early prototype of a new Kodak Super 8 camera that combines the classic features of a Super 8 with digital functionality. If your looking for 4K resolution then this isn’t the camera for you. The resolution limits for Super 8 are really determined by the lens and aperture used, as well as the the size and distribution of the silver particles or dye clouds. New filmstocks from Kodak for Super 8 have a very fine grain, which results in less noise than older stocks.
