Why Game-Based Learning Works for This Math Teacher - The Journal

When Giulia Bini started using a video game in her high school calculus class, she saw a 100 percent pass rate on testing about limits compared to 80 percent in the previous year; plus, grades rose by 10 percent.

The game she used, Variant: Limits by Triseum, places players on an imaginary planet. To rescue the planet from "imminent doom," they help "Equa," the main character, solve a series of increasingly tough calculus problems.

I, Teacher - Manitoba Teachers Society  | GBL | Scoop.it
Over the past five years students in some parts of the world have been greeted in their classrooms by teachers who appear to have come off the set of a George Lucas movie.

Robots have been teaching classes in Japan, South Korea and Abu Dhabi.

Throughout the world humans in various jobs are being replaced by robots at an ever-accelerating pace. The question for many people is whether their work will disappear with the rise of the machines.

Most think not.

7 Strategies for Getting Your Learners to Start Thinking Independently

7 Strategies for Getting Your Learners to Start Thinking Independently | GBL | Scoop.it

"Many people believe getting our learners to begin thinking independently is the main goal of education. “Teach students so that they don’t need the teacher.” But what if that wasn’t the case? What if there were something higher than independence? After all, Stephen Covey reminds us: independent thinking alone is not suited to interdependent reality.

Thinking independently comes as a part of working together collaboratively. In order to get there, these are the stages that we want to lead our students through: dependence to independence to interdependence. If we can get them from dependence to independence, we’re almost there. Interdependence comes with applying their hard-earned skills toward relationship building.
How are we going to help our students to start thinking independently so that they may eventually use those skills in practicing interdependence?"

Keep Gaming Forever to Save Your Brain, Scientists Say - Inverse  | GBL | Scoop.it

"Video games are part of the long, long list of supposedly lowbrow pop culture items that people are convinced will rot your brain. It’s got plenty of company alongside the likes of television, comic books, and pop music — if you go back far enough, you can probably find some ancient Sumerian claiming this whole writing business will do nothing but make people dumber — but a new study suggests a steady diet of gaming well into old age could actually help keep people’s brains healthy."
