Watch Ian McKellen, Derek Jacobi, and the Cast of Vicious Talk About the Series Finale

Watch Ian McKellen, Derek Jacobi, and the Cast of Vicious Talk About the Series Finale | Gay News | Scoop.it

Vicious, the British-to-PBS sitcom starring Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Derek Jacobi as a hilariously bitchy older gay couple, finished up its two-season run in June with a series finale special. The hourlong episode was organized around the four seasons, with each of the characters—the main couple, Violet (Frances de la Tour), Ash (Iwan Rheon), Penelope (Marcia Warren), and Mason (Philip Voss)—receiving a satisfying resolution of one sort or another. As my colleague June Thomas noted in her review, the finale “focused on the love and kindness that Freddie and Stuart … had previously kept hidden under layers and layers of arch putdowns and distinctively gay snark.”

Backlash over potential Grindr HIV profile filter

Backlash over potential Grindr HIV profile filter | Gay News | Scoop.it

THE minds behind gay networking app Grindr are reportedly considering adding a feature so users can filter potential matches based on their HIV status.

Academic David Myles from the University of Montreal shares Grindr screenshots with a group of researchers looking into dating apps, which revealed Grindr was surveying users about whether they would like to filter men based on their HIV status.

The questions in the survey included asking if someone was HIV positive, negative, on PrEP, or undetectable. Another survey question asked how users felt about being allowed to filter people on their HIV status.

Pete's insight:

This is appalling.

Marriage Equality plebiscite totally worth it says gay MP

Marriage Equality plebiscite totally worth it says gay MP | Gay News | Scoop.it

Newly elected out gay Liberal MP for the seat of Brisbane, Trevor Evans, has told the ABC that a plebiscite on marriage equality would be “totally worth it”.

"My take on it obviously is I'm an openly-gay now member of the parliament, in fact possibly the first one ever elected in Queensland, and so this is a deeply personal and very important issue for me," said Evans.

"I think a plebiscite offers us a great future, like it did in Ireland, of comprehensively putting this issue to bed in a way where the community completely owns the result and politicians just have to toe the line."

Pete's insight:

I remain very disappointed that my new local federal Member of Parliament, Trevor Evans, remains deeply committed to a plebiscite. This is not just party loyalty; he has told me that a plebiscite is in fact "the best way" to bring about marriage equality in Australia.

However, on the positive side, he has promised to work with Australian Marriage Equality and supporters of marriage equality to ensure that the mechanics of the plebiscite are fair.  He has also committed to campaign for marriage equality once the plebiscite has been called.

I look forward to not just campaigning with Trevor for marriage equality, but also working with him on a wide range of LGBTIQA+ initiatives over the life of this Parliament.

George Takei Is Right: Sulu Shouldn’t Be Gay in Star Trek Beyond

George Takei Is Right: Sulu Shouldn’t Be Gay in Star Trek Beyond | Gay News | Scoop.it

While many have interpreted Takei’s surprising resistance to having a gay Sulu in the new movie as an overzealous commitment to preserving the canon (something not unheard of among Trekkies), reading his reasoning and the subsequent response from writer Simon Pegg, it’s clear that there are far more substantial issues in question than a nerdy investment in fictional coherence—issues that get to the heart of what being “gay” means today and what queerness may or may not look like in centuries to come.

The end of AIDS?

The end of AIDS? | Gay News | Scoop.it

My concern about this messaging is that it depends on policy-makers understanding that AIDS is not a journalistic synonym for HIV.

If they don’t, this message will look like a green light to ‘mainstream HIV’ — ditching peer based services and funding hospitals, nurses, social workers and MPH grads to ‘mop up’.  That would be moreexpensive than community-based services, but it would restore what the health system views as the natural way of doing things — top down, expert-led.

When Everyone Can Be ‘Queer,’ Is Anyone?

When Everyone Can Be ‘Queer,’ Is Anyone? | Gay News | Scoop.it

Earlier this year, Vice published an essay that posed the question “Can Straight People Be Queer?” The article includes an image from Jaden Smith’s Facebook page of the musician looking petulant in a skirt, alongside the caption “My mood when they try to hate.” It also makes reference to the model Lily Rose Depp, who once compared sexuality to dietary habits: “You could think peanut butter is your favorite food for, 5,000 years and then be like, ‘I actually like burgers better,’ you know?” Vice, unsurprisingly, never settled on an answer, but a reader captured the article’s sentiment in a succinct and sarcastic comment, writing, “Queer is SO HOT right now.”

The speed with which modern society has adapted to accommodate the world’s vast spectrum of gender and sexual identities may be the most important cultural metamorphosis of our time. Facebook, which can be seen as a kind of social census, now offers nearly 60 different gender options, including “questioning” and “bigender” — or no gender at all. In a new commercial for Calvin Klein, Young Thug, a slender rapper prone to wearing dresses, states that he feels “there’s no such thing as gender.” The Oxford English Dictionary recently added Mx, a neutral replacement for titles like Mr. and Mrs. The video game “The Sims” has even begun allowing players to create same-sex relationships and lifted gender restrictions on characters’ clothing and hairstyles. Plainly, we are in the midst of a profoundly exhilarating revolution. And “queer” has come to serve as a linguistic catchall for this broadening spectrum of identities, so much so that people who consider themselves straight, but reject heteronormativity, might even call themselves queer. But when everyone can be queer, is anyone?

Don't fall into the Pauline Hanson trap

Don't fall into the Pauline Hanson trap | Gay News | Scoop.it

The big mistake that many people in the LGBTI community and its allies make in responding to these diversions, is that too often we allow ourselves to be pulled from our discussion ground onto the playing field of our opponents.

Suddenly we find we are discussing marriage equality on their terms and not on ours. As a community we need to get smarter about this. When our enemies set traps, we mustn’t walk right into them.

For too long, when anti-equality campaigners claimed that same-sex couples are not good parents or that children in LGBTI families are deprived, our response is to rush out all the arguments, data and evidence to show they are wrong.

In doing so we have entered the trap. A debate about equal marriage suddenly becomes one about gay parenting and our enemies have scuttled the discussion and avoided scrutiny of their weak arguments. This has to stop.

'We've won; that's the mandate': Malcolm Turnbull presses ahead with election promises

'We've won; that's the mandate': Malcolm Turnbull presses ahead with election promises | Gay News | Scoop.it

Now that it has won at least 76 seats, with the possibility of 77, Mr Turnbull has claimed a "solid" majority and mandate to go ahead with the policies it took to the election.

That includes the plebiscite on same-sex marriage and the revival of the Australian Building and Construction Commission. That bill would still be put to a special joint sitting of both houses if it fails to pass the new Senate, Mr Turnbull indicated.

"That was the reason you all endured an eight-week campaign," he told reporters. "That's what the double dissolution was all about and the same applies of course to the plebiscite."

Marriage Equality Would Now Pass Easily (If Politicians Would Just Vote On It)

Marriage Equality Would Now Pass Easily (If Politicians Would Just Vote On It) | Gay News | Scoop.it

The future of prime minister Malcolm Turnbull’s proposed national vote on marriage has been thrown into jeopardy after the Coalition scraped into government with a razor-thin margin at Australia’s federal election earlier this month.

A free vote in the parliament is the preferred course of Labor, the Greens and various crossbenchers — and advocates hope the legislation for the national plebiscite will be stymied in the senate, forcing a free vote on the issue.

Peak advocacy group Australian Marriage Equality say this election has ushered more supporters of marriage equality than ever into the parliament.

BuzzFeed News confirmed at least 15 seats where an MP who opposed marriage equality or was undeclared on the issue has been replaced with an MP who definitely supports marriage reform.

In the last parliament, support for same-sex marriage was on a knife edge. With the shift of at least 15 seats, and potentially more, it appears a change to the Marriage Act would now easily pass the House of Representatives, but only if both major parties allowed their MPs a free vote.

Beating AIDS in Australia is just the first step: we need a gold bullet for HIV

Beating AIDS in Australia is just the first step: we need a gold bullet for HIV | Gay News | Scoop.it

Almost exactly 20 years ago, a multi-drug treatment for HIV was confirmed as the way forward.

Today the millions of people worldwide who can access combination therapy (which is about half of those who need it) are leading productive, symptom-free lives, living with HIV and not dying of the infection which leads to AIDS.

But while we may have tamed AIDS at home, we have not yet developed the golden bullets to prevent or cure HIV infection and millions more remain at risk.

AIDS no longer a public health issue in Australia, scientists declare

AIDS no longer a public health issue in Australia, scientists declare | Gay News | Scoop.it

The nation's top scientists have declared "the end of AIDS" as a public health issue, as Australia joins the ranks of a select few countries which have successfully beaten the epidemic.

The number of Australians being diagnosed with AIDS each year is now so small, researchers from the Kirby and Peter Doherty institutes and the Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations have announced the age of the fatal syndrome over.

AIDS cases in Australia have plummeted since the advent of anti-retroviral medication in the mid-1990s, which stops HIV from progressing to AIDS - where the immune system is so badly damaged it cannot fight off infection.
