Dan Savage is an American columnist, author, media pundit and theater director. His syndicated sex-advice column, Savage Love (bit.ly/DSsavlove), appears in several dozen newspapers. Dan and his husband Terry started the It Gets Better Project (bit.ly/IGBproj) in 2010 in an effort to prevent suicide among LGBT youth by having gay adults convey the message that these teens' lives will improve. Dan also writes the SLOG blog (bit.ly/DSslog), produces the Savage Lovecast podcast (savagelovecast.com/), and has a new book, American Savage: Insights, Slights, and Fights on Faith, Sex, Love, and Politics (amzn.to/18JAe6q). He lives in Seattle with his husband and son.

If Australia tells the Parliament it wants same-sex marriage to be legalised, it will be back to the politicians to sort things out, with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull pushing for a vote before Christmas.

The ABC has asked all MPs how they will vote if that happens.

The numbers are in: on the ABC's reckoning, both houses of Parliament would pass a bill to change the marriage law.
