Should The Elder Scrolls Online go Free-to-Play? - IGN

Should The Elder Scrolls Online go Free-to-Play? - IGN | Gaming Updates | Scoop.it

There have been myriad calls for The Elder Scrolls Online to ditch its subscription fee, but one editor examines if that's really the answer.

Sharon's insight:

It is understandable that people would prefer the Elder Scrolls Online to be a Free to Play (F2P) game rather than a subscription based game, because of its obvious benefits. However, similar to the editor's thoughts on the game, there are risks involved when a game becomes F2P. The main worry would be whether or not they would be able to generate enough revenue. A balance can be struck between the 2 however, instead of turning the game from pay to play model to free to play, a viable alternative would be to free the game up on certain days of the year for a few days, just to get players to try out a demo version of the game before eventually deciding to purchase it with friends.

Sims 4 Trailer Hints At New 'Premium' Version

Sims 4 Trailer Hints At New 'Premium' Version | Gaming Updates | Scoop.it
Electronic Arts recently released a lengthy trailer for The Sims 4, the upcoming installment in its popular series of life-simulation games. The new video contained a surprising hint that EA might be planning a "Premium" version of the new game.
Sharon's insight:

The Sims series have always been known to add in extra costs for expansion packs and exclusive content apart from the base game in itself. The trailer, which was released recently introducing the Sims 4 game coming out late this year, featured game play from its producers with a somewhat added easter egg, they showed an early preview of the game as well as a hint that there might be a premium version of the game. The story was framed in a way that claim the hint might have been put in the trailer on purpose, which i disagree to. The 'hint' lasted for only about half to one second, and they were introducing a new feature to the Sims 4 game, never implemented in its predecessors. Unfortunately, the very first interface that pops up highlights the premium version, which caused the gaming critiques to be alarmed.

People Sure Are Mad That Kim Kardashian's Game Wasn't Working

People Sure Are Mad That Kim Kardashian's Game Wasn't Working | Gaming Updates | Scoop.it
Sometime during the weekend, Kim Kardashian: Hollywood stopped working for some players. Given the game's popularity--it's currently the number one free game on iTunes--it's probably not surprising that some fans got miffed that their game time was interrupted. Even so, getting death threats over something like this is kind of ridiculous.
Sharon's insight:

Kardashian's game, which is currently one of the top free games on iTunes, have brought about a surprising twist when the game went down. Even though the game was based on Kim Kardashian herself, she was not involved in the game production in any way, but people are bashing her on her Instagram account, demanding her to fix the game when it went down. The author of the article gave samples of Instagram posts with crude nature, but emphasized that comments on her posts mostly sounded crude even before this game emerged. So in a way the author avoided framing the nasty sounding posts on her wall as a result from the game's release.

League of Legends is testing new disciplinary measures for 'extreme toxicity'

League of Legends is testing new disciplinary measures for 'extreme toxicity' | Gaming Updates | Scoop.it
The League of Legends community has an unfortunate reputation, but Riot Games is eager to change it. Lead Designer of Social Systems Jeffrey Lin has tweeted that the studio will test new disciplinary measures today (July 21), with a view to introducing them permanently should they prove effective. Punishable offences include "intentional feeding, racism, death threats (and) homophobia."
Sharon's insight:

Having a lot of toxic comments online by other players especially in competitive games can drive away a part of the player fan base. This is an interesting take on trying to remove overly toxic players in their League of Legends game, because most game developers do not give two hoots about how bad the community is, so long it rakes in sufficient income. By doing so, it can encourage old players to rejoin the game when the community is better, and hopefully to build up its existing fan base.

Minecraft's Main Character Is Kind of A Jerk

When you think about it, Minecraft can be a bit of a jerk simulator.
Sharon's insight:

This video was a hilarious twist on the popular game, Minecraft, and summarized what the game was like in 20 seconds. Even though this is a rather complex game when one delves into it, the video game accurately depicts what a newbie normally does when they enter the game for the first time - which is randomly breaking blocks, killing animals, and basically destroying stuff.

Facebook's Acquisition of Oculus VR Now Complete - IGN

Facebook's Acquisition of Oculus VR Now Complete - IGN | Gaming Updates | Scoop.it
Oculus VR, makers of the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, is now officially part of Facebook.
Sharon's insight:

Oculus Virtual Reality headset had officially been acquired by Facebook as of yesterday for $2 billion, but details regarding the purpose is still yet not known. Even though the headset seemingly built for gaming could probably be used for communication purposes now, i still think that it is a beneficial acquisition for the gaming industry who is looking into creating and improving virtual reality gaming, which has been already an idea for decades yet it could not be fully implemented. With the required financial backing that Facebook can provide now, chances are the industry will be able to move forward at a faster pace to develop and improve its tools.

The Chinese Military Has One Kickass Gaming Bus

The Chinese Military Has One Kickass Gaming Bus | Gaming Updates | Scoop.it
The Chinese Military has some pretty interesting toys. Some of them are pretty crappy, some of them are knockoffs, others are just impressive, but none are like their latest coach bus.
Sharon's insight:

A photograph was recently released a picture of their latest coach bus, which featured a room decked with tables and chair and fitted with multiple laptops for gaming. Even though it is not known what the bus will be used for, it seems that military personnel have been allowed to use the computers to play games similar to counter strike. Perhaps the purpose of such a bus is to encourage people to sign on in the Chinese military, and with so many people becoming addicted to the internet as well as technology nowadays, it is not surprising that the military is finally making changes to accommodate their soldiers.

Up Close With Valve's First, Unfinished Game

Up Close With Valve's First, Unfinished Game | Gaming Updates | Scoop.it
The inner workings of Valve are shrouded in mystery, particularly when it comes to game development. Consider the unfinished game that Valve was working on at the same time as the original Half-Life: Prospero.
Sharon's insight:

More than a decade after this unfinished game called Valvetime was given up as a project, it is interesting how they decided to let its makings be known to the gaming community. Possibly, this was made to show the world its legacy in creating games, and how series can be dropped unexpectedly (like how so many players are waiting for games like Half Life 3 and Left 4 Dead 3 to appear yet they might actually be given up projects).

Sony Is Selling the PS Vita with a Dick Joke

As part of a PS Vita summer campaign, Sony has released a new Japanese ad on YouTube that can be described as ballsy. That, or a cheap sight gag.
Sharon's insight:

This campaign by Sony for a Playstation Vita console was an attention grabbing advertisement which captured the attention of many viewers. Even though it does seem rather crude to be displayed on television, it has definitely made up a significant audience online.

Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire Get New Mega Evolution - IGN

Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire Get New Mega Evolution - IGN | Gaming Updates | Scoop.it

Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are set to feature a new Mega Evolution, along with revamped gym leaders and the return of Pokemon Amie.

Sharon's insight:

With mega evolutions getting all the hype in recently released Pokemon versions, it seems that Pokemon has decided to release even more mega evolutions with the upcoming Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire game, being released on 21st November 2014. These extra evolutions started off with the Pokemon X and Y 3DS series, and gained immense popularity from there. My guess is that the game company is increasing the number of Pokemon able to undergo mega evolution in order to accommodate players' desires.
