Gamification - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gamification refers to service design aiming to provide game-like experiences, generally based around incentivize users in a non-traditional manner.[1] In practice gamification commonly applies to non-game applications and processes.[2] Gamification's proponents argue that it works by making technology more engaging,[3] by encouraging users to engage in desired behaviors,[4] by showing a path to mastery and autonomy, by helping to solve problems and being more engaging, and by taking advantage of humans' psychological predisposition to engage in gaming.[5]

Available data from gamified websites, applications, and processes indicate potential improvements in areas such as user engagement, ROI, data quality, timeliness, and learning.[6]

Early examples of gamification are based on giving reward points to people who share experiences on location-based platforms such as Facebook's "Place" feature, Foursquare, and Gowalla.[7] Some of the techniques include:
