How Does the Brain Learn Best? Smart Studying Strategies | #Research

How Does the Brain Learn Best? Smart Studying Strategies | #Research | Gameification | Scoop.it

— Breaking up and spacing out study time over days or weeks can substantially boost how much of the material students retain, and for longer, compared to lumping everything into a single, nose-to-the-grindstone session.

— Varying the studying environment — by hitting the books in, say, a cafe or garden rather than only hunkering down in the library, or even by listening to different background music — can help reinforce and sharpen the memory of what you learn.

— A 15-minute break to go for a walk or trawl on social media isn’t necessarily wasteful procrastination. Distractions and interruptions can allow for mental “incubation” and flashes of insight — but only if you’ve been working at a problem for a while and get stuck, according to a 2009 research meta-analysis.

— Quizzing oneself on new material, such as by reciting it aloud from memory or trying to tell a friend about it, is a far more powerful way to master information than just re-reading it, according to work by researchers including Henry Roediger III and Jeffrey Karpicke. (Roediger has co-authored his own book, “Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning.”)

Having only recently for the first time taken up Blogging for an assessment item, I have become aware of its benefits in the classroom.  This diagram shows more ways in which it can be useful than I originally had realised and as such, I have now decided that adding a reflective Blog into my teaching will be of benefit to the students.  The ability to be in connection with others worldwide, will open students up to new possibilities.  I hope also then, that my Blogs and my students Blogs will benefit the wider community also.  I am reminded though that I need to ensure that the online environment that my students are involved in is a safe environment.

Energy and Calm: Brain Breaks and Focused-Attention Practices | Gameification | Scoop.it
When presented with new material, standards, and complicated topics, we need to be focused and calm as we approach our assignments. We can use brain breaks and focused-attention practices to positively impact our emotional states and learning. They refocus our neural circuitry with either stimulating or quieting practices that generate increased activity in the prefrontal cortex, where problem solving and emotional regulation occur.

The Kinds Of Skills That Transcend Content

The Kinds Of Skills That Transcend Content | Gameification | Scoop.it

Learning is evolving–and not simply by the tools that actuate it. The process of adopting new learning domains and materials–many digital–has exposed the need for new skills. It is debatable whether or not such skills need to be expressly taught, or if they’re simply the residue of intense, well-designed learning experiences.

Are You Prepared For The Future Of Social Learning?

Are You Prepared For The Future Of Social Learning? | Gameification | Scoop.it

"

Are You Prepared For The Future Of Social Learning?

by Krish Kupathil, Mobiliya

R = e –t/s where R is retention, T is time and S is strength. A formula detailing a chemical reaction, or the new math behind a social media outreach strategy? Actually, an expression of the ability to remember, discovered by the German psychologist Herman Ebbinghaus. Known as the famous Forgetting Curve, it hypothesized the decline of memory retention over time. In fact we now know that 50 percent of formal learning is forgotten within the first hour.

With this statistic in mind, it is surprising that our formal education system –our schools, colleges and universities— has primarily relied on conventional learning methods to deliver information. Until even a few decades ago, schools, colleges and even professional organizations saw learning happening through structured modules, courses and programs delivered by the ‘head’ of the class, typically a teacher or trainer, to a group of passive listeners.

With the Internet exploding with information resources and tools for learning, teachers can be facilitators of information with a greater emphasis on explanation and critical thinking as opposed to the dissemination source. Formal learning systems have in some cases been slower to adopt this model, rightfully concerned with accuracy of material and consistency; yet with ever increasing numbers of individuals accessing information in learning environments, the necessity of these formal systems to adopt technological change is very clear."

The Most Important Teaching Skill for the Modern Educator to Master | #SynthesizingMind #LEARNing2LEARN

The Most Important Teaching Skill for the Modern Educator to Master | #SynthesizingMind #LEARNing2LEARN  | Gameification | Scoop.it

Throughout my 10+ year career, I’ve worked on this skill. I continue to work on it in my life outside of teaching. This skill will serve you (and your students) in many aspects of life. It’s certainly indispensable in the field of teaching, where stress abounds. So I’m about to tell you what I feel is the one teaching skill that all teachers need.
That skill is: the ability to turn things around.
That problem student? You need to be able to reach him. That bad day? You’ll need to recover from it and carry on the next. Unit plans not effective? You’ll need to change direction. It begins with your mindset. You start by knowing that failure is an opportunity to turn things around.

The Art of Turning It Around
Failure is not a label, nor a destiny. It is, however, a ‘not yet’ of a particular skill. ‘Not yet’ means you are capable and will get it eventually.

rodrick rajive lal's curator insight, November 13, 2015 3:43 AM

That psychology and marketing go hand in hand cannot be denied! What is it that makes you go to a restaurant that is ifull even if it means having to wait for some time? Why do you opt for a more expensive branded mobile phone than a cheaper mobile phone that has more features but is a new entry into the market?  Psychologists will talk about conditioning, triggers, cues, but I would term them as Propaganda Techniques, and emotional blackmail. Fact of the matter is that psychological research on. brand endorsements, herd mentality, conformism jumping  on to the bandwagon and fomo will determine how well the product will sell!
