GeekDad gets set for E3: what are the family gaming highlights? (Wired UK)

GeekDad gets set for E3: what are the family gaming highlights? (Wired UK) | TeknoMund! | Scoop.it
With the E3 express train steaming down the tracks it's easy to get caught in the searing glare of the bright lights and AAA titles. I'll return again to LA this year with the aim of picking through the headlines to find the games that matter to families.

The ideal solution to this would be to take the kids with me, although I suspect they wouldn't be allowed in because of the rating of some of the content on display. Nevertheless I'm sure they would be much better than me at sniffing out some hidden gems.

Last year I managed to overt my eyes long enough from the spine tingling Uncharted 3 trailer and other goodies to stumble upon titles like Leedmees on Kinect, Pilotwings Resort on 3DS and Wipeout 2048 on Vita. Each of these were surprise hits in our house when they were released.

This year it will be Halo 4, Resident Evil 6, Tomb Raider, Assassin's Creed III, God Of War Ascension amongst others, staring me in the face. These will undoubtedly be exciting, but I've already a few games lurking under the radar that families will find a bit more exciting.

First of all with my Dad hat on, I'm intrigued to see what Fable: The Journey has to add to the Kinect experience. Last year I was roundly impressed (a lot more than other journalists) with the way the game connected cultural gestures and meanings.

It extended controls beyond mimicking the real world motion and took it into the realm of symbols. This opened the door to a whole world of new ways to control the game that I found very intuitive.

I'm also quite interested in The Last of Us. Having followed the Uncharted series closely it will be good to see what Naughty Dog achieve with different play mechanics and a fresh cast.

Hopefully there will be more to this than the recent heavy handed and slightly derivative (in the no-surprises kind of way) trailer suggested.

Moving into more traditional family gaming territory, Little Big Planet Karting, Rock Band Blitz and the Elite Beat Agents-style Theatrhythm Final Fantasy all sound like they will have something a little different to offer.

Of course the Wii U will get its proper run out and we'll get a fuller picture of what it has to offer families. The sounds of Pikmin 3 and Super Mario Wii U are all quite exciting, but it is the smaller games that I'm more excited about. There is still quite a lot of work to do to convince me that this justifies a whole new console though, rather than just a new controller -- like Microsoft did with Kinect.

Other than that little lot I have my fingers crossed and eyes peeled for other surprising I may come across on the show floor.

Official Google Blog: Introducing the Knowledge Graph: things, not strings

Official Google Blog: Introducing the Knowledge Graph: things, not strings | TeknoMund! | Scoop.it

May 16, 2012 at 7:00 PM

Cross-posted on the Inside Search Blog
Search is a lot about discovery—the basic human need to learn and broaden your horizons. But searching still requires a lot of hard work by you, the user. So today I’m really excited to launch the Knowledge Graph, which will help you discover new information quickly and easily.

Take a query like [taj mahal]. For more than four decades, search has essentially been about matching keywords to queries. To a search engine the words [taj mahal] have been just that—two words.

But we all know that [taj mahal] has a much richer meaning. You might think of one of the world’s most beautiful monuments, or a Grammy Award-winning musician, or possibly even a casino in Atlantic City, NJ. Or, depending on when you last ate, the nearest Indian restaurant. It’s why we’ve been working on an intelligent model—in geek-speak, a “graph”—that understands real-world entities and their relationships to one another: things, not strings.

The Knowledge Graph enables you to search for things, people or places that Google knows about—landmarks, celebrities, cities, sports teams, buildings, geographical features, movies, celestial objects, works of art and more—and instantly get information that’s relevant to your query. This is a critical first step towards building the next

generation of search, which taps into the collective intelligence of the web and understands the world a bit more like people do.

Google’s Knowledge Graph isn’t just rooted in public sources such as Freebase, Wikipedia and the CIA World Factbook. It’s also augmented at a much larger scale—because we’re focused on comprehensive breadth and depth.

It currently contains more than 500 million objects, as well as more than 3.5 billion facts about and relationships between these different objects. And it’s tuned based on what people search for, and what we find out on the web. The Knowledge Graph enhances Google Search in three main ways to start:

PlayStation Vita sells 1.8 million units

PlayStation Vita sells 1.8 million units | TeknoMund! | Scoop.it
Sony says initial sales a good start, projecting to sell another 10 million systems in current fiscal year; game division posts loss for the year.

How well is the PlayStation Vita performing? Sony today announced that the new system has sold 1.8 million units in its lifetime. On top of that, the company is projecting to sell another 10 million units during the current fiscal year.

PS Vita sales are off to a "good start," says Hirai.
The news came during a postearnings investor call attended by Gamasutra for Sony's 2011 fiscal year earnings report. During the presentation, newly appointed Sony president Kaz Hirai noted initial PS Vita sales were hitting the mark.

"The last year, 1.8 million units for US, Japan, Asia, and Europe [were sold]," he said. "And as a starting phase, I think it was a good start."

In February, Sony announced that the PS Vita had sold 1.2 million units worldwide, indicating the system has moved an additional 600,000 systems during March.

Later in the call, Hirai explained that strong, alluring software will spur the PS Vita as a platform.

"For a game platform, like Vita, the software is the key to success--how good the software is, that is the key to business success. We have to reinforce the software area in order to improve the business, that is the basic line."

Sony also today updated sales figures for its game systems. The company said during the 2011 fiscal year, it sold 13.9 million PlayStation 3 consoles, compared to 14.3 million the year prior. Additionally, the PlayStation 2 moved 4.1 million units, a dip from the 6.4 million sold a year ago prior. Lastly, the PSP sold 6.8 million units in fiscal 2011, down from 8.0 million last year.

As for software, Sony said it sold 156.6 million PS3 titles worldwide, an increase for 147.9 million during the previous year. The PS2 moved 7.9 million games, a drop from the 16.4 million from a year prior, and the PSP sold 32.2 million games during the last fiscal year, down from 46.6 million year-on-year. PS Vita software sales were not announced.

As for Sony's actual earnings, for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2012, revenues for the firm's Consumer Products and Services division (which houses its game business) dipped 18.5 percent year-over-year to ¥3.14 trillion ($39.4 billion). Net losses for the period came in at ¥229.8 billion ($2.88 billion), compared to profits of ¥10.8 billion ($135.5 million) from a year prior.

Sony's overall business was also down. Revenues hit ¥6.5 trillion ($81.6 billion) during the year, marking a decrease of 9.6 percent compared to the previous fiscal year. The company took an operating loss of ¥67.3 billion ($844.5 million) for the year.

Looking ahead, Sony said it anticipates a return to profits in the current fiscal year. The company is presently expecting revenues to surge 14 percent to ¥7.4 trillion ($93 billion), and net income of ¥30 billion ($380 million).

E-mail revela como Zuckerberg afastou Saverin do Facebook - INFO

E-mail revela como Zuckerberg afastou Saverin do Facebook - INFO | TeknoMund! | Scoop.it

O caso é retratado no filme “A Rede Social”.

Angry Birds hits 1 billion downloads

Angry Birds hits 1 billion downloads | TeknoMund! | Scoop.it
Rovio's bird-flinging portable super-game franchise reaches new download milestone following March launch of Angry Birds Space.

The Angry Birds series has catapulted into a new stratosphere. Finnish developer Rovio Mobile today announced that games in the bird-flinging, pig-destroying portable strategy game franchise have been downloaded more than 1 billion times.

Angry Birds have now flocked to over a billion devices.

The milestone comes after the March release of the game's first true sequel, Angry Birds Space, which blasted off to 10 million downloads in just three days. That game includes a new low-gravity location, as well as additional bird types.

Angry Birds originally launched in 2009 and is now available on a range of platforms, including iOS and Android devices, the PlayStation 3, and Web browsers like Google Chrome.

Some gamers may shrug off Angry Birds as a simple way to pass time, but Legend of Zelda and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto praised the game last month, saying he admired its simple yet deep control scheme.

Despite the widespread success of Angry Birds, Rovio said in January that it is in no rush to follow the likes of LinkedIn and Zynga in filing for an initial public offering (IPO).

"This year is way too early for an IPO; there are too many open things, and we are in a very early stage of the Angry Birds life cycle," said Rovio marketing chief Peter Vesterbacka.

| Scoop.it

O Hangouts On Air exige associação do perfil do Google+ ao do YouTube.
