Rich nations 'give up' on new climate treaty until 2020

Rich nations 'give up' on new climate treaty until 2020 | G-Corporations | Scoop.it

Governments of the world's richest countries have given up on forging a new treaty on climate change to take effect this decade, with potentially disastrous consequences for the environment through global warming.

Ahead of critical talks starting next week, most of the world's leading economies now privately admit that no new global climate agreement will be reached before 2016 at the earliest, and that even if it were negotiated by then, they would stipulate it could not come into force until 2020.

The eight-year delay is the worst contemplated by world governments during 20 years of tortuous negotiations on greenhouse gas emissions, and comes despite intensifying warnings from scientists and economists about the rapidly increasing dangers of putting off prompt action.

Report says hybrids are safer for occupants than traditional cars

Report says hybrids are safer for occupants than traditional cars | G-Corporations | Scoop.it

People who invest in hybrid cars are significantly less likely to be injured in an accident because their heavy batteries make the vehicles safer than traditional cars, according to an insurance industry report released Thursday.

The average hybrid is 10 percent heavier than a traditional car of the same size, and the extra heft reduces the odds of being hurt in a crash by 25 percent, the report says.

“Saving at the pump no longer means you have to skimp on crash protection,” said Matt Moore, vice president of the Highway Loss Data Institute and author of the report.

The first generations of hybrids generally were smaller, lighter vehicles than those produced more recently. With manufacturers increasingly converting a portion of some traditionally powered car models to hybrids, the hybrid versions are heavier.

Indianapolis Airport Gets Electric Car Chargers | PC Mag

Indianapolis Airport Gets Electric Car Chargers | PC Mag | G-Corporations | Scoop.it

Electric vehicles owners in the Indianapolis area are in luck, as the Indianpolis International Airport will soon be home to three new EV chargers.

The wall-mounted GE WattStation chargers will be available as of today, and will be used as part of the airport's valet service, which will allow the airport to rotate charging vehicles as needed. The installation is part of a partnership between GE and Purdue University, in nearby West Lafayette, Indiana. The university will be gathering data from the chargers to be used in ongoing EV research.

"EV charging services provide more options for our travelers while also supporting our broader commitment to being a good neighbor responsive to the needs of our community," airport CEO John D. Clark III said. "Engaging in sustainability practices that add value to our customers, our community and our business model is a great way to make good on that commitment."

The airport has also previously announced plans to build a rooftop solar installation expected to generate 15 million kilowatt hours of power...
