New electric car charger is more efficient, 10 times smaller than current tech

New electric car charger is more efficient, 10 times smaller than current tech | Future of Electric Cars, Autonomous Vehicles & Energy | Scoop.it
Researchers at North Carolina State University have built an electric vehicle fast charger that is at least 10 times smaller than existing systems and wastes 60 percent less power during the charging process, without sacrificing the charging time. The team is now building a version that is capable of charging vehicles more quickly, while also charging multiple vehicles at the same time.

Jaguar has announced that it’s putting an electric version of that Jaguar E-Type, its classic 1960s sports car with a long hood and chrome bumpers, into production, with the first deliveries expected to start in the summer of 2020.  The news follows Jaguar debuting the EV sports car as a concept back in September, at the Jaguar Land Rover Tech Fest. An EV conversion service for existing E-type owners will also be offered, according to today’s announcement.  “We’ve been overwhelmed by the positive reaction to the Jaguar E-type Zero concept,” Jaguar Land Rover Classic Director Tim Hanning said in a released statement, adding that this represents a major stepping stone for Jaguar Classic. “E-type Zero showcases the incredible heritage of the E-type, and the expertise and craftsmanship at Classic Works, while demonstrating Jaguar Land Rover’s dedication to creating zero emission vehicles across every part of the business, including Jaguar Classic.”  Among the details of the all-electric E-Type:  Jaguar Classic is targeting a range in excess of 170 miles. It will be powered by a 40kWh battery, which can be recharged in six to seven hours, depending on the power source. It will also sport a state-of-the-art powertrain, LED headlights and a touchscreen to allow for a variety of “infotainment.”  Jaguar goes on to say an electric powertrain with single-speed reduction gear has been specially designed for the E-type, using many Jaguar I-PACE components. The E-Type’s lithium-ion battery pack has the same dimensions and a similar weight to the standard E-type’s six-cylinder XK engine and is also in the same location.

The electric motor, meanwhile, sits behind the battery pack, in place of the E-type’s gearbox. “A new propshaft sends power to a carry-over differential and final drive,” Jaguar explains. “Using an electric powertrain with similar weight and dimensions to the outgoing petrol engine and transmission means the car’s structure, including suspension and brakes, has not changed, simplifying the conversion and keeping the driving experience in line with the original vehicle. It drives, handles, rides and brakes like an original E-type with front-rear weight distribution unchanged.”

Richard Platt's curator insight, August 22, 12:20 PM

Waymo, the Alphabet self-driving car company that was spun out of Google, is picking up speed.  The company’s autonomous vehicles just drove 8 million miles on public roads. What’s more, it took the company just one month to go from 7 million miles to 8 million miles driven.  “We’re driving now at the rate of 25,000 miles every day on public roads,” CEO John Krafcik said Friday while addressing the National Governors Association.  Waymo’s acceleration in logging miles with self-driving cars has picked up in the last year. In November 2017, it crossed 4 million miles. Less than a year later it’s doubled that figure.  Most of the miles are being driven in the Phoenix area where the company has been developing and testing an autonomous ride-share service using modified Chrysler Pacifica hybrid minivans. The company plans to launch that ride-share service to the public later this year in Arizona.  Krafcik’s vision for the company is to partner with automakers, cargo operators and public transportation companies so they incorporate Waymo’s technology. Unlike automakers such as General Motors that are developing their own self-driving systems, Waymo has no plans to build its own vehicles.

Instead, Waymo is looking to build “drivers,” systems that can safely steer vehicles without requiring a human to sit behind the steering wheel.  “As we scale our business and have hundreds and thousands of Waymo drivers on the road, each one of those drivers is going to be exactly the same,” said Krafcik. “It’s going to be the world’s most experienced driver.”

A curious eight-story car tower just opened in southern China.

Customers interested in a Ford, be it a Mustang, Mondeo, Explorer or any of the 130 vehicles on tap, roll up to the unmanned structure. They are scanned by facial recognition software and then check out with the vehicle of their choice for a three-day test drive.  More than 1,200 people have tried it since last month; some have even ended up buying.   "It's a neat, novel, fun way to engage consumers, but it's had a much wider reach," says Dean Stoneley, Ford's Asia Pacific vice president for marketing. "There's a lot of learnings from it."  The car "vending machine" in Guangzhou — a joint project between Ford and the country's e-commerce colossus Alibaba Group, the Amazon of China — is but one brainchild in an explosion of ingenuity radiating from China these days on how to develop, engineer and market cars. Long derided as a fast follower, China has suddenly blossomed as the innovation nation.

Renault is rolling out the service at the Paris-Villiers Ikea store but hopes to make car sharing available at all French Ikea stores by September. The service is an expansion of Renault Mobility, which already has 180 self-service, 24/7 rental locations in France. Customers can rent a vehicle starting at €7 ($8.53 at current exchange rates) per hour. Vehicles must be returned to Ikea or Renault Mobility stations at the end of the rental.

Ikea customers will be able to rent Renault Trafic, Kangoo, and electric Kangoo ZE vans. Renault will also offer the tiny Zoe electric hatchback, although that doesn't seem like the ideal car for an Ikea trip. Renault plans to have 300 vehicles available to Ikea customers by September. While the fleet will start with a mix of internal-combustion and electric vehicles, Renault wants to go all electric by 2020.  Renault isn't the only automaker interested in car sharing. General Motors operates car-sharing services under its Maven brand in North America, and BMW and Daimler are prioritizing car sharing as part of a major joint mobility-service push. These initiatives serve as contingency plans against competition from services like Zipcar, and the possibility that autonomous cars will erode new-car sales.
