Management science researcher specialised in digital agriculture for the support of the agroecological transition (M/F) - CIRAD | Deadline 31 May 2018 | MAIB FTN Community Press Review 2011-2018 | Scoop.it
31/05/2018
Ciheam Bari FTN Press-Review's insight:
The rise of digital technology (ICT, big data, IA, etc.) is transforming construction, mediation and knowledge-sharing processes between stakeholders for the co-design of innovation in agriculture and is also modifying the organisation of advisory and support services. The situation of southern countries reveals specificities related to the types of innovation, particularly with frugal innovations. However, at both the production level and value chain level, digital agriculture is not free of tensions. The position involves understanding how digital technology can contribute to the agroecological transition through the construction of new knowledge and the facilitation of learning. More specifically, it involves the following: 1) questioning the effects of these new organizational arrangements and digital tools on the evolution of production systems and value chains with regard to the agroecological transition; 2) questioning the design of these digital tools with stakeholders and the use of these tools by farmers, value chains players and advisers; 3) thinking about the insertion of these digital tools in organisational arrangements. The position will involve combining comparative analyses of support-advisory services, surveys on learning and the transformation of farmers' and advisors' practices, as well as action-research with digital and consulting stakeholders, in order to develop generic methods of digital tool co-design. Place France – Montpellier (12 to 24 months) and then Africa (West Africa) – probably - Note: Assignment to southern countries is a preferred form of research at CIRAD. After an initial assignment to Montpellier, other assignments in France or abroad will be considered.
Profil

Knowledge of farming systems and digital agriculture
Experience in setting up and managing projects appreciated

Three OPEN PhD vacancies within the framework of MYTOX-SOUTH – Mytox-South

Three OPEN PhD vacancies within the framework of MYTOX-SOUTH – Mytox-South | MAIB FTN Community Press Review 2011-2018 | Scoop.it
Ciheam Bari FTN Press-Review's insight:
The LEAP-Agri research project MycoSafe-South, the “European–African partnership for safe and efficient use of mycotoxin-mitigation strategies in sub-Saharan Africa”, intends to harness the expertise and infrastructure available in Europe by strengthening the capacity of the Southern partners to tackle the mycotoxin problem and the associated food safety issues.
This project will identify safe and efficient mitigation strategies to reduce aflatoxins (AFs) and fumonisins (FBs) exposure in Africa, with special focus on children. Food security remains a major challenge in developing countries, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, with the highest prevalence of undernourishment. Worldwide, cereal-based crops are spoiled by toxigenic moulds and their mycotoxins. Food spoilage by moulds and mycotoxins not only reduces the amount of the available food, and can have deleterious effects for animal & human health, it also adversely affects the ability of Africa to trade with the rest of the world. Acute high-level exposure to AFs leads to human death, which has repeatedly occurred in Sub-Saharan Africa, while chronic exposure to AFs or FBs may cause liver or oesophageal cancer, respectively. AFs and FBs are defined as important causal factors of stunting in African children. AFs are critical for young children since exposure occurs in utero through transplacental passage, and through breastfeeding. Also, weaning foods are cereal- and tuber-based, both of which are susceptible to AFs and FBs. Furthermore, the immunosuppressive effects of mycotoxins enhance the susceptibility of humans and animals to infectious diseases, and worsen the current HIV pandemic. Moreover, mouldy food & feed is frequently fed to food-producing animals, impairing food safety by carry-over to animal products such as milk, meat and eggs. Therefore, there is an urgent research priority for the development of safe, efficient and sustainable post-harvest intervention strategies to reduce animal & human exposure to AFs and FBs, and applicable to both rural small-scale subsistence and commercial farming in Sub-Saharan Africa. The consortium creates opportunities for young PhD researchers to conduct this research at both European and African institutes.

Gunther Antonissen (Gunther.Antonissen@UGent.be) How to apply Letters of application, including a motivation letter, extensive curriculum vitae, a copy of diplomas and a grading list can be sent by email to Dr. Gunther Antonissen (Gunther.Antonissen@UGent.be) before June 15th, 2018. [Training Opportunity ] Evidence for policy summer school – science, policy and demography - European Commission | EU SCIENCE HUB | Deadline: 17 May 2018

BCFN YES! 2018 is the latest edition of the international contest organised by the BCFN Foundation on the theme of food sustainability. The winning projects will be announced at the Milan Forum 2018.

A maximum of three research grants of € 20,000 will be awarded in favor of innovative research proposals in one or more of the following areas: Sustainable and healthy dietary patterns; Sustainable agriculture; Food security.

• The Foundation analyzes the major issues related to food and nutrition, health and sustainability, producing high scientific content to enable people to make informed decisions about the food they eat.
 • The BCFN considers young researchers an essential resource to address these issues with concrete solutions and impact. For this reason, it has launched the seventh edition of BCFN YES! Young Earth Solutions, an international competition for PhD students and postdoctoral researchers under 35, from all over the world and from any educational background. The research proposals can be submitted by individual researchers and multidisciplinary teams, until June 14th, 2018.
More information to apply is available on the competition’s website: www.bcfnyes.com

The authors of the ten best research projects will be invited to the International Forum on Food and Nutrition in Milan, on November 27 and 28, 2018.
All travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by BCFN. Finalists will have the opportunity to present their projects in front of a panel of experts and the public of the Forum, and in this occasion, the three winning projects will be selected. You can have a look at the 2017 highlights here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3juttHdbeaM

The BCFN YES!
Research Grant Competition is an ideal opportunity to create a new generation of sustainability experts. All finalists become part of BCFN Alumni, global network that brings together finalists of all the previous editions. The Alumni share resources and experiences, participate in workshops and events, and are in constant dialogue with other institutions to promote food sustainability and the active role of future generations within society. I hope that young researchers in the food sustainability sector will seize this great opportunity of visibility, funding and contacts.
