5 Steps to Create a Safety Culture

5 Steps to Create a Safety Culture | Freight Shipping | Scoop.it
Communication
Good communication across all operations going on in your workplace is essential to creating a safety-centered culture.  The ability to communicate workplace hazards to all workers and supervisors in a quick and efficient manner will allow you to minimize the damages suffered due to the hazard.  This could end up being the difference between a minor accident and major disaster.

Praise Safety
When supervisors and managers recognize safe behavior with positive reinforcement, this creates an environment throughout the entire workplace that encourages future safety.  Employees at all levels of your organization should feel safe to speak out about the safety conditions they experience at work.  Managers can help create a safety-centric culture in their workplace by commenting on safety conditions often, these comments should emphasize positives and minimize hostility.

Organizational Structure
You would be surprised at how often employee mistakes and incidents were caused by shortcomings in organizational structure.  You need to comb through your operations and find areas where there is room for improvement regarding safety.  Once these are fixed, you will enjoy a more seamless workforce with minimal incidents.

Foster Trust
Always learn from your mistakes.  Do not view mistakes and accidents as wholly negative, look for a silver lining.  When an employee feels that management will take a rational and calm approach towards a mistake that they made, that employee will feel more comfortable at work and will therefore be more efficient.  It is very important to stay away from creating a workplace where safety hinders worker performance and instead try and build a feeling of mutual trust between your work-force.

Build Safety into Daily Behavior
Many organizations make the mistake of creating an environment where workplace safety is considered separate and unimportant compared to daily operations.  Instead, you should integrate safety training into your employee’s day to day work-life.  Constantly checking to make sure that all the work being done by your employees is carried out safely and correctly is an essential part of implementing a safety conscience culture.  Your employees will get into the habit of carefully monitoring their own safety every single day, instead of just thinking about it on “safety training day”.
