It's time to reclaim Islam from the fanatics. Here's how | freeorder | Scoop.it

"I am not a moderate Muslim, I am a reformist. Rooting out corrupt practices can never be an act of mere moderation. Restoring integrity, or wholeness, is always a radical act." —Irshad Manji

Leif Smith's insight:

Irshad Manji received a Cobden-Bright Award from Explorers Foundation in 2007 — one of our best investments, repaid in moral courage, many times over. Thank you, Irshad.

Please listen to Irshad's short talk, delivered at her reception of an honorary doctorate from Bishop's University, Quebec. She asks, "What does it mean to live with integrity?" and tells her story of a personal lack of moral courage that led to a passage from identity to integrity. It is a remarkable speech: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwEr4E_WVSM&list=UUTDYMvK8FW_pg2dTmhoOo8Q

Leif Smith's insight:
Creator of Wikipedia, one of the great inventions of the 20th century.

"Wales cites Austrian School economist Friedrich Hayek's essay, "The Use of Knowledge in Society", which he read as an undergraduate,[27] as "central" to his thinking about "how to manage the Wikipedia project".[17] Hayek argued that information is decentralized—that each individual only knows a small fraction of what is known collectively—and that as a result, decisions are best made by those with local knowledge, rather than by a central authority." -Wikipedia

DaVinci Institute | freeorder | Scoop.it

"We find ourselves on an incredible journey into the future. Hollywood, science fiction, and popular culture often tell stories that paint the future in a dystopian light. These stories serve as eye opening warnings, but at DaVinci Institute we believe the future will be bright, fun, and exciting! Sure we’ll have challenges, and any number of setbacks, but every problem creates an opportunity. With the right education, the benefits of future technology far outweigh the risks."

Leif Smith's insight:
A good place to find good ideas. Here's an article by Thomas Frey, founder of DaVinci: "Twelve Critical Skills for the Future" - a remarkable compression of useful insights into a short space.

Why Brazilians Are Demanding "Menos Marx, Mais Mises" — Adriano Gianturco

Why Brazilians Are Demanding "Menos Marx, Mais Mises" — Adriano Gianturco | freeorder | Scoop.it

"Libertarians in Brazil have built a burgeoning movement. Unlike Olavo de Carvalho’s conservative movement, the libertarians lacked a central ideological leader and have achieved very impressive results in a relatively short period of time. Today, libertarianism is growing faster in Brazil than in any other country.

Leif Smith's insight:
The economics of Ludwig von Mises describes what happens when the results of all labor remain in the control of the producer until that person destroys them, exchanges them, or gives them away. It's the economics of total non-exploitation of any person by any other person. Marx could not get it right because he used only a labor theory of value and did not understand time preference. Think of oxygen as open space characterized by an absence of barriers that prevent people from offering their best to others on any terms mutually acceptable. A message to all politicians: The world's people need to breathe. The existence of oxygen can no longer be hidden. They need it, they are learning that they can get it, and they will have it. At the very least, please attempt to find a personally beneficial way to get out of the way. Engagement with, and clearing the way for blockchain based apps such as the ones being incubated by ConsenSys may be an opportunity to join the open space makers.

Richard Cobden: Creator of the Free Market - John Chodes

"The first half of the nineteenth century in England was much like contemporary America: It was a country strangled by bureaucratic regulations. Many people were always hungry, not because of poverty level wages, but because the price of grain for bread was kept artificially high by laws which simultaneously prevented the importation of foreign grain and subsidized domestic producers. Food riots,
