The Fall of the Republic

The Fall of the Republic | Freelancelot | Scoop.it
Rome wasn’t destroyed in a day; a combination of empire-building, power-grabbing, and a population that only wanted to be bought off slowly eroded the liberties and wealth the Republic had bestowed. Americans should take note.
Brant David McLaughlin's insight:

Armageddon cometh.

Use This Amazing Resource to Track How Humans Are Making Progress around the World

Use This Amazing Resource to Track How Humans Are Making Progress around the World | Freelancelot | Scoop.it
Over the long term and in most places, human quality of life has been increasingly steadily on every measure, from poverty to literacy to longevity to leisure time. And in the places in which the opposite appears to be happening, we often have clear evidence that oppressive and economically illiterate government policies are to blame.

The Parkland Kids Are Like Pentecostal Child Preachers

The Parkland Kids Are Like Pentecostal Child Preachers | Freelancelot | Scoop.it

“In case you haven’t noticed, progressivism has become more of a religion than a political philosophy. Like Lutherans or Muslims, when gathering together, progressives gleefully sing their liturgical chants. Like Catholics, they have their own version of heresy trials whereupon those declared guilty of false doctrine are deemed unwelcome to teach in their presence.

And like devotees of all faiths, progressives fawn over their pious youth. “These teenage survivors of the Parkland school shooting are inspiring,” progressives tell us. “Look how they’re tirelessly serving the progressive god of gun control. Look at their courageous devotion as they rebuke powerful NRA puppets like Marco Rubio.”

Some Pundits Say There's No Campus Free Speech 'Crisis.' Here's Why They're Wrong

Also at The Washington Post, Jeffrey Sachs makes a statement no less strong than Yglesias's and Hartman's: "The campus free speech 'crisis' is a myth. Here are the facts."

Sachs teaches at Acadia University, where an associate professor of psychology, Rick Mehta, is under investigation for voicing conservative opinions in his classroom. His department head complained that some of his students refuse to come to class because the experience of listening to him talk about why the gender wage gap is exaggerated produces too much anxiety. A professor of social work told the Toronto Star why she came down on the offended students' side, saying Mehta's opinion "does border on hate speech."

The Revolt Against the Elites

The election of 2016 was terrible because it wasn’t an election, it was a rebellion. America is having a civil war, or, to be more accurate, a War of Incivility.

The war is not between Republicans and Democrats or between conservatives and progressives. The war is between the frightened and what they fear. It is being fought by the people who perceive themselves as controlling nothing. They are besieging the people they perceive as controlling everything. We are in the midst of a Perception Insurrection, or, depending on how you perceive it, a Loser Mutiny.

The revolt against the elites targets all manner of preeminence—political elites, business elites, media elites, institutional elites, and, kind reader, you. You're reading an article in a serious magazine, and the article is about a serious subject (however flippantly treated). This marks you as an elite.

Don't Let President Trump Distract You with Stormy Daniels

Trump has taken all of these lessons to the next level. He may not be playing 10-dimensional chess, but he doesn't have to. He's dealing with a press corps and political opponents who simply aren't at his level. This is the guy who managed to squeak out a win against Hillary Clinton, perhaps the only living politician who might have been able to take it to Trump.

Make Progress Exciting Again

French Guiana:

Arianespace is the French company that fires off huge rocket ships blasting great big things so far up into the sky that they don’t come down again. Or, to put it in bland corporate language, Arianespace is the world’s leading commercial satellite launch provider.

And the corporation provided me with an excellent satellite launch. I was invited by my friend Aaron Lewis, Arianespace’s director of media and government relations and former staffer for congressman Dana Rohrabacher, longtime chair of the House space and aeronautics subcommittee.

Aaron and I—and about 70 engineers, scientists, and executives involved with the rocket and its payload—flew to the Centre Spatial Guyanais, the European spaceport in French Guiana.

At 10 p.m. we went to an elevated viewing platform five kilometers from the launchpad, deep in a cinematically perfect jungle complete with strange bird calls and thick hanging vines. Of course this is French jungle. “Me Tarzan. Toi joli femme de serveuse avec le plat de hors d’oeuvres de foie gras et caviar.”
