Barcelona will open the Museum of World Cultures in June 2014

Barcelona will open the Museum of World Cultures in June 2014 | Free time fillers | Scoop.it

Barcelona (ACN).- Barcelona is widening its range of museums and the latest offer is the Museum of World Cultures, which will open in June 2014 in two gothic palaces in front of the Picasso Museum: Palau Nadal and Palau Marquès de Lió.

The two buildings were respectively hosting the Barbier-Mueller Museum of Pre-Columbian Art – which has closed its doors since the collection left Barcelona – and the Design Hub (DHUB) – which will move to a brand new building in Glòries Square. Visitors of the Museum of World Cultures will discover the world through about 700 pieces of art from Asia, Africa, America and Oceania. Most of the pieces come from the non-western collections of the Ethnological Museum of Barcelona and private collections, such as Folch’s collection. The Museum of World Cultures will cost €5 million and will occupy an area of 2,100 square meters.

Visitors guide to Catalonia holidays.Best locations, culture, climate and travel info, selected villas and holiday highlights for Catalonia.

The northern province of Girona is the most varied. Its long “rugged coast”, or Costa Brava, lends the land a Mediterranean climate and is the destination for sandy beaches and the Dali castle museum in Figueres.

The mild, green Girona region is an excellent choice for those who want to have a genuine experience of rural Spain with beautiful mountain scenery and still be within reach of sunny seaside resorts (such as Cadaques, Saint Feliu de Guixols or Tossa de Mar) and the Catalonian capital of Barcelona...

Human castles - a metaphor for the Catalan spirit

Human castles - a metaphor for the Catalan spirit | Free time fillers | Scoop.it

Even after the transition to democracy in the late 1970s Catalans still found their values at odds with the rest of Spain. In 2010 Catalonia banned bullfighting, a practice that purportedly represents the epitome of Spanish culture; sending a clear signal that Catalonia’s sensibilities were very different to those of the rest of Spain and more aligned with the rest of Western Europe.

Catalonia also punches above its weight when it comes to global cultural influence which gives it a real sense of regional pride. Its famous sons include the genius architect Antoni Gaudí and artist Salvador Dalí; the region is seat of the legendary Barça football club; was the home of Ferran Adrià’s El Bulli, regarded as the best restaurant in the world before it closed in 2011and whose influence revolutionised global cuisine; and despite Franco’s attempt to crush the Catalan language, its usage has enjoyed a renaissance and is spoken as the lingua franca in much of the region...

Roses (ACN).- The wine cellar of what it once was the best restaurant in the world is up for auction, in a sale that will delight wine lovers and gastronomic sybarites alike.

In April, Sotheby’s is going to sell up to 8,807 wine bottles that Catalan chef Ferran Adrià and his partner Juli Soler collected over the 27 years in which the renowned elBulli was up and running. The restaurant in the coastal town of Roses, in the Costa Brava, was considered by many to be the best in the world. Adrià surprised the world by announcing his intention to close the three-Michelin-star restaurant to create the ‘BulliFoundation’, a creativity centre that will open its doors in 2014. Proceeds from the sale of the wine cellar will go straight to the foundation...
