Creative Commons Licenses and Attribution: How To Embed Them Inside Your Digital Content

Creative Commons Licenses and Attribution: How To Embed Them Inside Your Digital Content | OER Resources: open ebooks & OER resources for open educations & research | Scoop.it

Robin Good: JISC provides a very well documented guide to the use of Creative Commons licences (also referred to as CC licences) which can greatly facilitate the copying, reuse, distribution, and in some cases, the modification of the original owner’s creative work without needing to get permission each time from the original rights holder.

In addition to this the correct use and embedding of CC license may greatly help in the effort to make original sources more transparent to the final reader, in many context, including news and content curation efforts of many kinds.

Creative Commons licences can be embedded into a variety of resources, such as PowerPoint, images, Word docs, elearning resources, podcasts and other audio visual resources.

While specifically prepared for UK public sector organizations this document can be quite useful for anyone interested in the use of CC licenses to distribute digital content online.

Key Benefits of embedding CC licences for content curation and attribution:

It can help the user see that the resource is an 'open' resource and licensed under a specific CC licence terms
It can help reduce the future 'orphan works' (works for which the rights holders are unknown or cannot be traced), and assist in creation of appropriate attribution, citation and potential negotiation for further permissions. By embedding the selected CC licence to the licence details even if the resource gets detached from its metadata. This is particularly the case if the resource is found via a search engine instead of the original website platform which might host specific copyright restrictions.

The Bibliothek used to be a labyrinth ...

... the very old books used to be chaned with a metal catena and the former books could not be described as "portable" :-)

... since the invention of paperbacks is is usable to carry books around, read in a train ...

... but the actual revolution in publishing, sharing and producing books and other documents in the social web ... brings a complete new handling with books, words, literature, culture ...

.. and is is important to experiment with new form of production, distribution and receptions of books.

I want to share and explore new forms of reading, writing, speaking, commenting, linking, sharing and distributing of "texts", which also means interactive and "living" hypermedia files ...

.. a lot of  projects files and books will be in english, but i will also have o look on german resources ... so my language will be english and german, sorry for my ugly english ...

Coughlan, T. and Perryman, L.-A. - Beyond the ivory tower: a model for nurturing informal learning and development communities through open educational practices | OER Resources: open ebooks & OER resources for open educations & research | Scoop.it

Open Educational Resources (OER) and Open Educational Practices (OEP) are making an evergrowing impact on the field of adult learning, offering free high-quality education to increasing numbers of people. However, the top-down distribution of weighty university courses that typifies current provision is not necessarily suitable for contexts such as Continued Professional Development (CPD). This article proposes that a change of focus from a supplier-driven to a needs-led approach, grounded in theories of informal learning, could increase the positive impact of OER and OEP beyond the ivory towers of higher education.

The extremely rapid expansion of open educational resource (OER) initiatives and the millions of learners they attract can be understood as an indicator of an emerging revolution in education and learning. This article describes recent developments in this area and develops conceptual foundations for studies and policies on OER. We describe four different types of OER, locate these in a field of learning theories, and discuss how the wide adoption of OER may constrain and accelerate the transformation of learning and education in the knowledge society.

Planned CourseSites Upgrade Includes Blackboard xpLor and SP12/13

Open Educational Resources at Your Fingertips!

We are excited to announce that along with the planned upgrade to SP13 this evening from 10:00 p.m. ET through 5:00 a.m. ET on Friday, June 21st, we are adding a new solution to CourseSites -- Blackboard xpLor. Blackboard xpLor is a global learning object repository that enables educators to easily author, copyright, share, and discover rich educational materials.  With the addition of the basic Blackboard xpLor, CourseSites will be connected to a universe of educational content, including Khan Academy lessons, shared as open educational resources. As CourseSites Instructors, you will be able to leverage and contribute to this repository directly from within your course environments.

Since Blackboard xpLor is a cloud-based repository, to accommodate common teaching and learning practices, Blackboard xpLor comes with guidelines. As such, we have revised our Terms of Use and will release a new version on Friday, June 21st.  There is no need to re accept the Terms of Use. Your continued usage implies consent.

The MOOC Guide: to offer an online history of the development of #MOOC by Stephen Downes | OER Resources: open ebooks & OER resources for open educations & research | Scoop.it
The purpose of this document is two-fold:
- to offer an online history of the development of the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC)
- to use that history to describe major elements of a MOOC
Each chapter of this guide looks at one of the first MOOCs and some early influences. It contains these parts:
- a description of the MOOC, what it did, and what was learned
- a description of the element of MOOC theory learned in the offering of the course
- practical tools that can be used to develop that aspect of a MOOC
- practical tips on how to be successful
Contribute to this Book
You are invited to contribute. If you participated in a MOOC, add a paragraph describing your experience (you can sign your name to it, so we know it's a personal story). If you know of resources or can add information about an element of MOOC theory, add to or edit the text that already exists. If you know of tools, provide a link to the tool, a short description, and your assessment of the tool.
If you have a tip, add the tip.

Ten Years Later: Why Open Educational Resources Have Not Noticeably Affected Higher Education, and Why We Should Care (EDUCAUSE Review) | EDUCAUSE.edu | OER Resources: open ebooks & OER resources for open educations & research | Scoop.it
EDUCAUSE Review Online

..

Key Takeaways
  • Open educational resources made a dramatic appearance with the 2002 debut of MIT's Open Courseware initiative.
  • In the roughly 10 years since, OERs have not noticeably disrupted the traditional business model of higher education or affected daily teaching approaches at most institutions.
  • Four major hurdles seem the likeliest hindrances to adoption of OERs: discoverability, quality control, bridging the last mile, and acquisition.
  • OERs could unify and advance the essentially disconnected developments in digital textbooks and MOOCs by establishing a global enterprise learning content management system.

This is an important and interesting article. On the other hand, way back when before the networks, I recall an EDUCOM Educational Uses of IT (EUIT) program was giving awards to professors and developers of academic software for microcomputers. What made a strong impression on me was that they said, even then, that it took at least seven, yes 7, years from concept to adoption of the software in higher education. Some cultures, like academia do not change very fast.

BTW Thanks to Heiko Idensen and markusmind for their pre-scooping this article.
