Are MOOCs a Waste of Time? | Management - Innovation -Technology and beyond | Scoop.it
The MOOC, or massive open online course, has taken the spotlight in recent educational debate. Growing popularity and high enrollment rates are forcing many universities to take a second look at their non-involvement. Let’s explore just what these courses are and if they’re a worthwhile addition to the span of higher education.
Fouad Bendris's insight:

MOOCs offer the opportunity to explore models of pedagogy with fresh eyes !

Your Assumptions About Reading Are Wrong !

Your Assumptions About Reading Are Wrong ! | Management - Innovation -Technology and beyond | Scoop.it
We all know that no one reads books any more, right? It’s because of the internet, and twitter, and Justin Bieber, I think. The argument for this was summed up by Nicholas Carr in his article Is Google Making Us Stupid? You can see it in these stats too – this is data from Gallup showing how many people answer “yes” to the question “Are you currently reading any books or novels at present?”
Fouad Bendris's insight:

“It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so.”

Avoiding false assumptions provides a big innovation opportunity. What do you know for sure that just ain’t so !

The Big Data ‘Opportunity Area’ for Innovation

The Big Data ‘Opportunity Area’ for Innovation | Management - Innovation -Technology and beyond | Scoop.it

Recently, at the excellent 2014 MBA Innovation Summit put on by Columbia, Yale and Wharton, I listened to Ron Gonen, NYC's Deputy Commissioner of Sanitation, talk about how his organization is using big data to address big problems faced by the city. By collecting tons of analytical data, the city is now able to identify everything from the illegal subdivisions (where landlords have divided apartments into too many rooms for fire capacity) that are most at risk for deadly fires to areas most attractive to entrepreneurs.  NYC is using that data to identify trends and to figure out the best ways to allocate their scarce resources in order to save lives !

Fouad Bendris's insight:

Great transition from well-known " the Cathedral meets the Bazaar" from OSS GTM ... Big data is full of temptation because it feels like – if you just get more information – you’ll be able to find the hidden answer.  That’s what’s drawing so many executives in.  But where big data really offers the opportunity to bring value is in uncovering unknown insights into how consumers really act. Smart executives will then use the insights that they’ve uncovered as “Opportunity Areas” that they’ll focus their innovation efforts within.

Innovation Excellence | Social consumerism or capitalism? You decide.

Innovation Excellence | Social consumerism or capitalism? You decide. | Management - Innovation -Technology and beyond | Scoop.it

Today, there is a lot of talk about “social consumerism.”  But, at what point is social consumerism really capitalism in disguise?

This weekend, while on a walk with my family, we stopped at a coffee shop for a quick snack.  My wife and kids went in, while I stayed outside with the dog. Five minutes later, my daughter came out with a “pupcake.”  She told me that this tiny cupcake (literally smaller than a munchkin with a little peanut butter on top) was $1.25, and that $0.50 went to the local animal shelter.  She was very proud of her purchase – and I was proud of her, too. But, I had a different perspective of the coffee shop ...

Fouad Bendris's insight:

Actually - Doing good will surely have a positive impact on your business.   But you have to do it for the right reasons.  The moment you do it for the wrong reasons, the opposite can happen !

Two more European airlines clear smartphones for take-off - just leave the laptop off for now !

Two more European airlines clear smartphones for take-off - just leave the laptop off for now ! | Management - Innovation -Technology and beyond | Scoop.it

Spanish airlines Vueling and Iberia have given the go-ahead for passengers to use their smart devices during take-off.

The two airlines announced changes to the rules governing the use of electronic equipment on Monday, approving the use of smaller portable devices during all phases of the flight as long as they're in airplane mode. Laptops, however, are not permitted during taxiing, take-off, and landing. "Starting today the use of electronic devices during all phases of flight will be possible onboard of all Vueling aircraft," Vueling said in a statement. Both airlines, which are part of the International Airlines Group (IAG), said in statements yesterday that they had received approval from Europe's Aviation Safety Agency (EASA)

Fouad Bendris's insight:

Europe's policy shift followed a similar move by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which began allowing consumers to use electronic devices at all points during a flight, subject to individual airline rules. Similarly, any device that transfers data still needs to be in 'airplane mode' — transmissions over cellular networks, regulated by the FCC, are still prohibited while in flight !

The Best Way to Defuse Your Stress !

The Best Way to Defuse Your Stress ! | Management - Innovation -Technology and beyond | Scoop.it
Let the monster out.

Reason and stress speak different languages. Reason is intellectual; stress is physical. Reason favors words; stress prefers action. Our minds can advise us all they want, but our bodies have the upper hand. In fact, the more our minds try to curtail our stress, the more volatile it becomes. If you pause to feel your stress, you will recognize it, quite literally, as energy flowing in your body. We live with that energy all the time, and, typically, it’s useful — it keeps us fresh, on our toes, and ready for action. Think of stress as a monster, who lives in your body and feeds on uncertainty. The monster’s most satisfying meal starts with the sentence: “What will happen if . . . . ?”

Fouad Bendris's insight:

Stress is, ultimately, about trying to control that which you can’t. So trying to control your stress is one more thing that increases your stress. Physically releasing the stress on your terms helps. The point is to create an intentional and safe doorway for the stress to escape before it explodes ///

Why Startups Should Steal Ideas and Hire Weirdos | Wired Opinion !

Why Startups Should Steal Ideas and Hire Weirdos | Wired Opinion ! | Management - Innovation -Technology and beyond | Scoop.it

One disturbing implication of these findings is that our hyper-connected world may be moving toward a state in which there is too much idea flow. In a world of echo chambers, fads and panics are the norm -- and so it is much harder to make good decisions. The most consistently creative and insightful people are explorers. They spend an enormous amount of time seeking out new people and different ideas, without necessarily trying very hard to find the “best” people or “best” ideas !

Fouad Bendris's insight:

“Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty, because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That’s because they were able to connect experiences they’ve had and synthesize new things.” — Steve Jobs

Giant Predatory Ants !

Giant Predatory Ants ! | Management - Innovation -Technology and beyond | Scoop.it
Big fierce animals are rare...unless they are GIANT ANTS.

Giant Tropical Ants (Dinoponera australis) live in South America and are….well, giant. In addition to being one of the largest ants in the world (28 mm long or; about 1.1 inches), they are also incredibly abundant in tropical forest habitats. How do these ants break the “big predators are rare” rule?

Fouad Bendris's insight:

Ruthlessly efficient foraging.  Most ants used the same route every time they left the nest.  By becoming familiar with a route, an individual ant could recognize landmarks and prey cues more quickly.  The distribution of different routes among nest-mates would create a sort of foraging grid, more effectively covering the area surrounding the nest !

Algorithms Can Save Networking from Being Business Card Roulette

Algorithms Can Save Networking from Being Business Card Roulette | Management - Innovation -Technology and beyond | Scoop.it
Networking can be something of a crapshoot. Though there may be someone in the room you really should meet — someone whose acquaintance might help you out professionally — it’s often impossible to determine who precisely that is. And so we go to industry conferences and share business cards like shotgun spray, hoping that with a little luck we’ll make a useful connection. In large organizations, the same thing goes for networking at company functions; surely there’s someone in another department it would be useful to know, but when scanning the room at the holiday party it’s not always clear who that is. New research shows how computational speed-dating can help.
Fouad Bendris's insight:

No doubt some people will react negatively to the idea of algorithms deciding whom we should meet and collaborate with — not least the business development professionals whose networking acumen would potentially be less valuable ...

Perfect memory, enhanced vision, an expert golf swing: The future of brain implants

Perfect memory, enhanced vision, an expert golf swing: The future of brain implants | Management - Innovation -Technology and beyond | Scoop.it

How soon can we expect to see brain implants for perfect memory, enhanced vision, hypernormal focus or an expert golf swing? We're closer than you might think. Science fiction? Perhaps not for very much longer. Brain implants today are where laser eye surgery was several decades ago. They are not risk-free and make sense only for a narrowly defined set of patients—but they are a sign of things to come !

Fouad Bendris's insight:

Will these devices make our society as a whole happier, more peaceful and more productive? What kind of world might they create? It's impossible to predict. But, then again, it is not the business of the future to be predictable or sugarcoated. As President Ronald Reagan once put it, "The future doesn't belong to the fainthearted; it belongs to the brave."

The Science of Cheese Is Far Weirder Than You Think ! | Management - Innovation -Technology and beyond | Scoop.it

Cheese is not just food, it’s a variety show. It has fascinated humanity for a long time, inspiring people to refer to it as 'milk’s leap toward immortality' . But the strangest question I have ever been asked is whether you can make cheese from breast milk. And it’s been asked several times. The science behind the transformation from plants to milk to cheese is amazing. In fact, cheese has much in common with wine and beer: They result from fermentation by microorganisms; they are “value-added” products where processing greatly increases the value; and they reflect local climate and terrain. Cheese has fascinated humanity for a long time, inspiring people to refer to it as everything from “the wine of foods” (Vivenne Marquis and Patricia Haskell) to “milk’s leap toward immortality” (Clifton Fadiman)…

Why So Many Brainstorming Sessions Fail ?

Why So Many Brainstorming Sessions Fail ? | Management - Innovation -Technology and beyond | Scoop.it

I finally figured out why so many brainstorming sessions fail. It's the exact same reason why so many marriages fail. The couple shouldn't have gotten married in the first place. Many brainstorm sessions that are called never should have happened. And while some kind of meeting may have been appropriate for the invitees to attend, the form of a brainstorm session was the wrong form !

Fouad Bendris's insight:

Sometimes the only reason for a team to get together is to make decisions. Who’s doing what? Why? By when? If your team has no agreement or process in place about how it makes decisions, these kinds of meetings won’t go very well — unless, of course, it’s already been established that the “boss” or “team leader” is the one with the power to make decisions on behalf of the team ...
