Education in the information age: is technology making us stupid? | Formation professionnelle et numérique | Scoop.it

A recent study suggests that our modern lifestyles are making us “less intelligent” than our ancestors, at least at a genetic level. This research echoes concerns Einstein had when he supposedly said,

The future belongs to those who take charge of their own learning | Learning in the Social Workplace | Formation professionnelle et numérique | Scoop.it
Once upon a time (as all good fairy tales start) employees had a job for life. Having left school or college you could start work for an organization and remain there for your whole professional life. The company would provide you with all the training you needed, give you all the promotions you deserved and then at your retirement, reward your long service with the gift of a clock or a gold watch.

Don't Know Much about History (of Education)

Don't Know Much about History (of Education) | Formation professionnelle et numérique | Scoop.it

And to jump from 1892 to 2000 — from the “Committee of Ten” to Khan Academy — ignores the vocal opposition to that so-called factory model and the construction of alternatives by educators themselves. It ignores the entire progressive education movement. It ignores the work of John Dewey and Maria Montessori. Conveniently.

To jump from 1892 to 2000 — from the “Committee of Ten” to Khan Academy — ignores the work done by numerous educators and technologists to think about how computers and networks will reshape how we teach and learn. It overlooks the work of Seymour Papert and all his students. It ignores the decades of research on cognitive tutoring and the notion that a computer should be able to respond on an individualized level to each student — something that Khan’s history of education credits to Khan himself.

ECAR Study of Undergraduate Students and Information Technology, 2012 | EDUCAUSE.edu | Formation professionnelle et numérique | Scoop.it

ECAR has surveyed undergraduate students annually since 2004 about technology in higher education. In 2012, ECAR collaborated with 195 institutions to collect responses from more than 100,000 students about their technology experiences. The findings are distilled into the broad thematic message for institutions and educators to balance strategic innovation with solid delivery of basic institutional services and pedagogical practices and to know students well enough to understand which innovations they value the most.
