Where workers live can have a considerable effect on their interest in changing careers. Working adults in San Francisco are much less likely than workers across the nation to want to change careers, with 60 percent saying they are not at all interested in changing careers, compared to the national average of 45 percent. New Yorkers are more interested in change than most Americans, with 33 percent of working adults in New York City reporting they are very or extremely interested in career change, compared to the national average of 24 percent. Overall, 62 percent of New York City workers are at least somewhat interested in career change. Sixty-seven percent of workers in Atlanta and 60 percent of those in Los Angeles are interested in career change, followed by Chicago (55 percent) and Dallas-Ft. Worth (52 percent).

The Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge targets students in the years when research indicates their interest in science begins to wane and encourages them to explore scientific concepts and creatively communicate their findings. In January, students nationwide were asked to create a short video describing a new innovation or solution that could solve or impact an everyday problem related to how we live, work or play. In addition to the 10 finalists, 34 students were selected as state merit winners in this year's competition and will each receive a 3M Innovation Prize Package that includes a Kindle Fire HD with a branded case and 3M Natural View Anti-Glare Screen Protector.

The survey showed that while over four in five (82%) of all respondents were familiar with the concept of online courses, only 23% of all survey respondents are familiar with MOOCs. Those most familiar with MOOCs were employers (33%) and students (30%) the least familiar were parents (23%).

“I used to say I didn’t want individual faculty members making individual accommodations for their students. Now I need 5,000 content creators to be creating accessible content,” said Lissner, who is president of the national Association on Higher Education and Disability and the American Disabilities Act coordinator at Ohio State University. “I don’t expect a faculty member to convert a textbook, but it is not unreasonable of them to convert a 20-page article on a webpage into an accessible format.”

Sponsored by Braille Institute of America(R), the competition serves to encourage blind children of all ages to fine-tune their braille skills, which are essential to their success in the sighted world. The 13(th) Annual National Braille Challenge(R) will take place on Saturday, June 22, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Braille Institute's headquarters in Los Angeles, located at 741 North Vermont Avenue. The participants, ages 6 to 19, will compete in challenging categories requiring them to transcribe, type and read braille at a furious pace using a device called a Perkins Brailler.

One postdoc asks: is the joy of working in a research field you love worth the pressure and uncertainty of an academic career

 

Academic grant and job applications can be long-winded affairs; a grant I recently applied for came with a nonsensically long 55 page guide for candidates, and took weeks to complete (with a success rate of 15%). On the other hand changing career direction is no easy matter for a specialist (my own field is history), especially since speculative applications are not an effective strategy in the current climate.
