Global Aquaculture Market is Expected to Reach USD 195.13 billion in 2019

24 October 2013, PRNewswire for Transparence Market Research -- According to a new report published by Transparency Market Research "Aquaculture (Marine Water, Freshwater and Brackish Water) Market for Carp, Molluscs, Crustaceans, Salmon, Trout and Other Fishes - Global Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends and Forecast, 2013 - 2019," the global market for aquaculture was valued at USD 135.10 billion in 2012 and is expected to reach USD 195.13 billion in 2019, growing at a CAGR of 5.1% from 2013 to 2019. In terms of volume, global production was 66.5 million tons in 2012 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.3% from 2013 to 2019. Volume of captured fish is fast depleting and is expected to be one of the primary factors driving global aquaculture production over the next few years. In addition, increasing consumer awareness regarding health benefits associated with consumption of fish and fish products is expected to boost aquaculture production within the forecast period. Aquaculture is expected to surpass captured fish industry as the major source for human consumption by the end of 2015. However, parameters such as adverse environmental conditions and lack of technology are expected to hamper the growth of the market. Increasing practice of rice and fish farming, which aims at increasing yields of rice grains as well as fishes is expected to open new opportunities for the growth of the market within the near future. ..."

Research funding and skills key to food for post-2015

Research funding and skills key to food for post-2015 | Food Security & Sustainable Agricultural Development | Scoop.it
19 October 2013, SciDev.Net -- "Agriculture needs public research funds and more trained experts to meet post-2015 goals, says a UN-backed report. Public spending on agricultural research must double in the next decade if the world is to successfully move to sustainable methods of food production, says a UN-backed report. This funding must be coupled with long-term investment in the training of agricultural professionals to fill the skill gaps in many developing countries, concludes the report published yesterday by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network's (SDSN) group on agriculture and food systems. The SDSN was launched by the UN last year to identify and demonstrate new approaches to sustainable development, and produced its first report in June. The new, agriculture, report was released together with six other reports by the network's thematic groups on issues including health, natural resource management, and ecosystem services and biodiversity. The reports represent a major input by scientists towards a new set of global development goals to replace the Millennium Development Goals in 2015. ..." Photo credit: CIMMYT

Report: Meat Producers Ignore Pleas For Health, Environmental Reform

Report: Meat Producers Ignore Pleas For Health, Environmental Reform | Food Security & Sustainable Agricultural Development | Scoop.it
24 October 2013, NPR, Eliza Barclay -- "A commission evaluating the impacts of animal agriculture says the industry has resisted change. Five years ago, a landmark report excoriated the animal agriculture industry's practices and laid out a road map for how it could do better. But in the years since, the problems are just as bad — and maybe even worse. That's the conclusion of the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future. This week, the center scolded the industry again with a review of how it has fared in the years since the Pew Commission on Industrial Farm Animal Production released its original report. From a regulatory, or legislative, standpoint, we have actually regressed on many of these issues in the last five years," says Bob Martin, who served as executive director of the original Pew commission, which included policymakers and scientists. Martin is now a program director at the Center for a Livable Future. ..." Photo: Chickens in a mechanized hatchery in Monroe County, Ala. Buyenlarge/Getty Images
