Investigators are looking into whether or not the illnesses are connected to consuming burgers or any other food items sold at the stadium.
Dave Summers's insight:

Burgers sound the main item of interest.  Beef, since the early 1980's contain the deadly variant of E-coli, (0157).

Always cook them to over 75 degrees C to ensure bacterial destruction.  Never, ever cook like steaks, ie, medium or rare, that would be asking for trouble..

Burger van given five-star hygiene rating

Burger van given five-star hygiene rating | food safety | Scoop.it
A burger van is one of four food businesses in Aylesbury to receive a hygiene rating of ‘very good’ in latest district council inspections.
Dave Summers's insight:

Always check out the following before you eat from a burger van:

Does the van look clean?

Do the staff wear clean protective clothing including head covering?

Do they have hand washing facilities and wash their hands after handling raw meat and eggs and after breaks?

Do they check the cooked temperature of their food with a digital temperature probe?

Do they have refrigeration equipment?

Are their food hygiene certificates on display and in date?

If any of the above are lacking....walk away or you will get food poisoning...

Spices a Potent Source of Food Poisoning
LA Weekly (blog)
Food safety experts have been keeping a lid on a surprising source of food poisoning -- your spice cabinet, according to the New York Times.
Dave Summers's insight:

Unfortunately spices and dried herbs can contain a dormant form of food poisoning bacteria called spores.  As soon as these come into contact with moisture, like a seed, they sprout into bacteria, start to grow and cause food poisoning. Spices and herbs can also contain chemical contaminants which can cause poisoning.

What about a ban from running a takeaway, perhaps for 6 months/1 year?  The UK law does not go far enough in preventing these ignorant, dirty owners from preventing disease and death from food poisoning.

Federico's E.coli Outbreak Investigation Continues, 74 Sick
Food Poisoning Bulletin
The Federico's E. coli outbreak investigation continues as officials try to discover the specific source that has made 74 people sick and hospitalized 23 of them.
Dave Summers's insight:

In my view the outbreak has probably come from 1 of 2 places:

1. Infecter raw produce coming into contact with ready to eat cold food (E coli will not survive normal cooking)

or most commonly

2. Somebody with poor personal hygiene has not washed their hands after going to the toilet and transferring the bacteria ready to eat food.

Inspectors: Check the ingredients and staff.

Joey Davis's curator insight, April 14, 2014 6:34 AM

If in doubt , throw it out .There are several things that people can do to prevent getting Listeria  such as:  washing raw produce, keeping raw meats separate from other foods and chopping boards, keeping surface areas clean, cooking meat thoroughly and keeping it at the right temperature as well as storing foods properly  .

Consumers also need to know that Listeria is resistant to cold temperatures, so refrigeration alone is not enough to kill this microorganism. If food has been left out for more than 2 hours or more don't eat it.

It is also important to have work procedures in place to monitor temperature gages , used by dates and personal hygiene to avoid the ramifications that occur if the correct measures are not implemented.

Newport takeaway operators in fined for food hygiene offences
South Wales Argus
TWO takeaway managers in Newport have been fined after being convicted of a string of food hygiene offences.
Dave Summers's insight:

These owners think it is easy to make money in food without taking the necessary precautions. Food safety is paramount, it takes money to train staff, to keep premises clean and to ensure food is maintained at the correct temperature. UK law is not strong enough, more prison sentences are needed for breaches in food safety legislation not just paltry fines.

Kroger Recalling Cookie Dough for Undeclared Peanuts
Food Poisoning Bulletin
ConAgra is recalling Kroger's Break 'n Bake Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough because Peanut Butter Cup Cookie Dough was mistakenly packaged into the wrong containers.
Dave Summers's insight:

It always amazes me that products are continually recalled due to mis-labelling or a labelling error. Is it regarded as rocket science to proof read these lablels?  It is also well overdue for manufacturers to state if their products actually contain nuts, not might contain.  This is and always has been a cop-out for manufacturers as it saves them money from employing experts to decide on the peanut contents.

Texas Listeria Case Linked to Wisconsin Cheese Outbreak Strain - Food Safety News http://t.co/aahA1QGbWr
Dave Summers's insight:

Listeria monocytogenes can be found in unpasteurised milk. The best tasting cheese, in my view, is made from unpasteurised milk.  Cheese manufacturers who make cheese this way must test their milk more vigorously to ensure an outbreak like this does not occur.
