Toxic herbicide found in many Texans' drinking water | GMOs & FOOD, WATER & SOIL MATTERS | Scoop.it
Nearly 500 water utilities across the state tested positive for atrazine — a weed killer — which can lead to harmful health effects, according to a new report. The Environmental Working Group also found that utilities are testing water during times when the herbicide isn’t being used as much — and that they may be lowballing the results. More than 10 million Texans have consumed drinking water with some level of atrazine – a toxic …

Giant Pac-Man: Ocean Cleanup's final design to eat away at the Great Pacific Garbage Patch | Nick Lavars | NewAtlas.com

The Ocean Cleanup's trash-collecting barriers have been through a number of iterations since their conception around five years ago. The latest, and final version that will be towed out to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch later in the year, cleverly harnesses the power of wind and surface waves to autonomously sweep through the area, gathering up plastic waste as it goes.

Some serious research and development has gone into perfecting the team's approach to the monumental problem of plastic waste in the ocean.

Gold mining is devastating the rainforests of Peru | James Holloway | NewAtlas.com

More than 170,000 acres of primary rainforest in the Peruvian Amazon have been destroyed in the past 5 years due to small-scale gold mining. This is 30 percent more than has been previously reported, according to new research carried out by scientists at Wake Forest University's Center for Amazonian Scientific Innovation (CINCIA).

The team, based in the Madre de Dios region of Peru, initially came up with a new method to identify those areas specifically affected by small-scale mining. They then combined existing CLASlite forest monitoring technology and Global Forest Change data sets on forest loss to produce a deforestation detection tool that is 20-25 percent more accurate than methods previously used.

"The scale of the deforestation is really shocking," says Luis Fernandez, executive director of CINCIA and research associate professor in the department of biology.

The air quality in India is unacceptably bad. Here's why. | Mark Kaufman | Mashable.com

The air quality in India is unacceptably bad. Here's why. | Mark Kaufman | Mashable.com | GMOs & FOOD, WATER & SOIL MATTERS | Scoop.it

Apocalyptically horrendous air has descended upon India's sprawling capital territory, Delhi.

According to November 4 measurements taken by the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, the Air Quality Index (AQI) hit 534. For perspective, the scale only goes up to 500, wherein levels are described as "Hazardous."

"534 is higher than your highest value — which is insane," Anthony Wexler, the director of the Air Quality Research Center at the University of California, said in an interview.

But, come early November, terrible air quality becomes the norm in northern India. This time of year, farmers burn off bounties of crop waste to clear fields.

Combined with other pollutants emitted from the over 18 million people living in the Delhi area, this means the air becomes laden with microscopic bits of pollution smaller than the width of a human hair, known as Particulate Matter 2.5, or PM 2.5.

EPA signs off on rule exempting farmers from reporting emissions | Miranda Green | TheHill.com

EPA signs off on rule exempting farmers from reporting emissions | Miranda Green | TheHill.com | GMOs & FOOD, WATER & SOIL MATTERS | Scoop.it

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced Tuesday that it is implementing recently passed legislation that exempts farmers from having to report emissions derived from animal waste and other pollutants.

The final rule, signed by EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler on Monday, codifies the most recent version of the FARM Act, which exempted many farmers from reporting air releases of hazardous substances from animal waste.

Signed into law in March, the act made changes to Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) that the bill supporters said regulated emissions from farms much like it regulated Superfund sites, which they call a far too lofty request.

Lawmakers added the provision to the FARM ACT after a Supreme Court decision in 2008 that struck down an Bush-era EPA rule that tried to exempt farmers from the same reporting requirements.
