New ‘Monsanto Protection Act’ Gives Biotechnology Industry and GMOs Immunity From Federal Law, Minimum Regulation and Oversight

Proponents of genetically modified agriculture have just won a major victory in Congress... http://maplight.org/content/73204

==RIDER SLIPPED IN ANONYMOUSLY  - SO MUCH FOR DEMOCRACY===

FOOD DEMOCRACY NOW: With the Senate passage of the Monsanto Protection Act, biotech lobbyists are one step closer to making sure that their new GMO crops can evade any serious scientific or regulatory review.

This dangerous provision, which we're calling the Monsanto Protection Act, strips judges of their constitutional mandate to protect consumer and farmer rights and the environment, while opening up the floodgates for the planting of new untested genetically engineered crops, endangering farmers, citizens and the environment.

Monsanto and other companies that support genetically modified agriculture have just won a major victory in Congress. A rider (Sec. 735) included in the 2013 continuing resolution (H.R. 933), a bill that must be passed by Congress to prevent a government shutdown, stripped federal courts of their power to restrict the use of genetically modified crops that they find have not undergone a complete environmental impact assessment from the USDA. The rider essentially eliminated the only legal tool environmental advocates had for slowing down or stopping the use of new genetically modified crops. The bill passed the Senate yesterday by a vote of 73-26 and the House today by a vote of 318-109.

Sec. 735 was inserted in the bill when it was in the Senate Appropriations Committee, although so far no member of the Committee has publicly acknowledged putting it in. An amendment to remove the provision was proposed by Senator Jon Tester, but the amendment was not allowed a vote.

Data: According to a MapLight analysis of campaign contributions to members of the 113th Congress from the political action committees of several organizations supporting the use of genetically modified crops, since January 1, 2009 (data source: FEC):  DETAILS..... http://maplight.org/content/73204

US says EU rules on biotech crops 'unnecessary' - AFP (2013)

US says EU rules on biotech crops 'unnecessary' - AFP (2013) | Food and Safety standards | Scoop.it

The United States has criticized "unnecessary" European Union rules against genetically modified US crop imports as it prepares to enter free-trade talks with the EU. EU restrictions notably have resulted in delays in the approval of new GM traits "despite positive assessments by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)," the US Trade Representative's office said...

The USTR also criticized the EU for imposing "commercially infeasible requirements" on GE content in food products under EU Traceability and Labeling regulations. "Foreign governments continue to impose discriminatory or otherwise unwarranted measures on US agricultural exports," ... the acting USTR said... "These barriers not only harm US ranchers and farmers... but they also deprive consumers around the world an access to safe, high-quality US food and agricultural goods"...

The US and the EU are planning to launch negotiations aimed at creating the world's biggest free-trade area that will cover the politically sensitive question of genetically modified crops. Allowed in the US, they are strictly regulated in the EU where only two GM crops have been authorized [for cultivation]...

The USTR pointed to the EU's "unnecessary and burdensome coexistence requirements to planting of GE crops alongside non-GE crops by certain EU member states." A French official... said that France did not want the upcoming trade negotiations to cover genetically modified crops.

Bute again. This time in Portugal. And they FINALLY said, "cannot be reduced only to a labelling problem." Ya think?

Have to wonder how much further this is going to spread while our legislators in DC sit on their duffs and do NOTHING while state legislators cram horse slaughter down their constituent's throats like they did in Oklahoma.

Disgusting.

Question to EFSA: How can Aspartame be considered safe?

Question to EFSA: How can Aspartame be considered safe? | Food and Safety standards | Scoop.it

Does the European Food Safety Authority have 'an inbred conflict of interest' in the matter of the artificial sweetener Aspartame?

Betty Martini of Mission Possible International definitely seems to think so. She asks "How can aspartame be considered safe when independent scientific peer reviewed research consistently shows it is deadly?"

And she reminds EFSA of studies that show Aspartame to be a danger to health, while the agency has apparently decided to look the other way.

Aspartame, the controversial artificial sweetener, was Monsanto's baby - until they spun off Searle who then sold the hot potato to the Japanese Ajinomoto.

It was Donald Rumsfeld, CEO of Searle at the time, who "called in his chips" with the US government to get Aspartame approved - against all scientific evidence that proved the stuff causes cancer, seizures and worse.

Fox News Ignores Food Poisoning In Segment Attacking Food Safety Regulations

Fox News Ignores Food Poisoning In Segment Attacking Food Safety Regulations | Food and Safety standards | Scoop.it

Fox News fearmongered about the costs of proposed federal food safety regulations without informing viewers that foodborne illnesses sicken millions of Americans annually and lead to the deaths of 3,000 people per year.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the Food and Drug Administration has proposed two food safety regulations -- not yet finalized and still subject to public input -- which, among other safeguards, would require "science- and risk-based standards at fruit and vegetable farms and packing facilities."

We all cherry pick our data, depending on our beliefs and experiences, but ignoring the high cost of lapses in food safety is irresponsible for a major media outlet.
