Last week, I shared Dr. Klaus Oberauer’s research into how working memory operates and how multitasking is more fiction than reality. One of the key findings in Dr. Oberauer’s work is that there are three functional components of working memory: the active center of attention that is being processed by the brain, the active data [...]

What I like about this idea is the centrality of learning as opposed to the centrality of the device. We've discovered that sharing a device have far-reaching and positive possibilities for networking, interaction, teamwork and collaboration in the formal learning environment. OLPC is an example of a notion that goes the other way - individualism, not to mention, the complexities when trying to enable young learners to focus.

An End to the "Close Your Door and Do Your Own Thing" Era | 21st Century Learning- What is relevant for Learners today? | Scoop.it
It seems like everywhere you turn, you can find a study that says that the teacher is the number one factor impacting student achievement. No kidding, right? I think many of us in the field have known this for a long time.

More than ever before, we need to work together to better ourselves and our profession. In this age of high stakes testing, the need to prepare students to be college and career ready, and with a changing teacher evaluation system we need to support one another.

Google Forms is getting more traction particularly since the introduction of some useful features to its functionality. Now users can very easily insert YouTube videos into forms ; they can also integrate images and create awesome forms with a variety of sophisticated backgrounds. As a teacher, you will find these features handy as you can now create a quiz around a video and get students to exercise their writing, listening, and comprehension skills in ways that were not available before.

The Future of Education: BYOD in the Classroom | Innovation Insights | Wired.com

The Future of Education: BYOD in the Classroom | Innovation Insights | Wired.com | 21st Century Learning- What is relevant for Learners today? | Scoop.it

"As children across the nation return to school, many are going armed with their own computational tools. From laptops to tablets and smartphones, schools and universities across the globe are testing out a more dynamic learning environment, where students bring and use their choice of technologically assistive devices in the classroom. Despite the obvious benefits, the influx of mobile technology in educational systems has also provoked backlash from parents and teachers alike, similar to the BYOD backlash witnessed within enterprise IT departments in the past few years.

Educational institutions are ultimately presented two options: adopt a BYOD program, embracing the technology trend, encouraging student participation, and expanding curriculum to include BYOD-driven topics, or to impose of a BYOD policy, setting rules to govern the presence and practice of these potentially disruptive devices."

Aunty Alice's curator insight, October 24, 2013 5:44 PM

Interesting that some Silicon Valley inventors of Apple I-pad  choose to send their children to Waldorf Schools that do not embrace computers. Why? The outcomes of hours spent in front of computer screens for developing brains has not been identified clearly in terms of long term effects. I believe that a good teacher who empowers her students to learn can do so without technology, I am speaking here of elementary schools where most students are gaining literacy that can be applied in any medium a little later. Let's restrict their use in kindergartens and primary schools to be on the safe side.
