Lauren Cook's curator insight, December 13, 2013 12:32 PM

As a kindergarten teacher, you can teach AM, PM, and/or full day kindergarten. When I was younger I just took AM kindergarten, which was useful because I got used to waking up for school. The thing was I would leave after a few hours, this article showed the benefits of full day kindergarten. I dont think this would be a bad thing, because you are in school for full days the rest of the time in high school anyways. By being in school for longer that doesnt mean they just need to learn more math, science, and writing skills. But they can learn better how to work with other students, and social skills, just by being in the classroom environment for longer.

"Could it be that the best way to learn happens in kindergarten?..."We are inspired by the way kindergarten students learn through a spiraling process in which they imagine what they want to do, create a project based on their ideas, play with their creations, share their ideas and creations with others, and reflect on their experiences – all of which leads them to imagine new ideas and new projects. This iterative learning process is ideal preparation for today’s fast-changing society in which people must continually come up with innovative solutions to unexpected situations in their lives."Mitch Resnick

Personal Journey to Personalize Learning in Kindergarten | Barbara Bray

Personal Journey to Personalize Learning in Kindergarten | Barbara Bray | Full-Day Early Learning – Kindergarten Program | Scoop.it

Lisa Welch and Wanda Richardson are Kindergarten Teachers in Wisconsin who are personalizing learning for their students. They share their story in how they they needed to rethink personalize learning for their students.  Here are they questions they reflected on as they created new learning paths for their students.

> "How can you personalize learning for students who are not yet able to read?

> How can you help student’s become independent learners at this young age?

> How can the 4 c’s of 21st Century Learning make their way into everything we do?

> How can we impart that core knowledge that is vital at this age?

We don’t have all the answers by any means, but we are certainly finding that we are on an exciting path at this time! Currently, every child in our classroom has a PERSONALIZED Learning Plan. These plans are created according to the child’s interests in learning styles as well as in subject areas. For example, one child is studying the subway and is interested in creating on the computer, math and music/dancing."

Thank you Lisa and Wanda for sharing this story!
