Rogers and CIBC make joint deal for NFC mobile payments in Canada, let you check out with your BlackBerry

Rogers and CIBC make joint deal for NFC mobile payments in Canada, let you check out with your BlackBerry | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

Canadians sometimes can't catch a break: while NFC payments have been relatively common for Americans, Europeans and certainly the Japanese, Canucks have had to largely make do paying with ye olde credit carde. Rogers and national bank CIBC want to put an end to these antediluvian ways: starting later this year, CIBC card holders will just need to swipe an NFC-equipped BlackBerry like the Bold 9900 (Bold 9930 for CDMA-loving Americans) at a matching terminal to pay at a given store. The only special requirement is a secure SIM card that gives customers the freedom to change phones, even if it does create problems switching banks or carriers down the line. We're just hoping that Android and other platforms get the same treatment and let more of our Canadian friends pay for poutine that much faster.

Virgin Mobile gets a Google Wallet phone: LG Optimus Elite

Virgin Mobile gets a Google Wallet phone: LG Optimus Elite | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

Virgin Mobile is a Sprint-owned pre-paid brand and the new handset is the first on Virgin Mobile to include a near-field communications (NFC) chip that can use Google’s Wallet for mobile purchases. The Android 2.3 handset is priced at $149.99 with pre-paid plans starting at $35 per month.

NFC may be the biggest new feature here, however. Google is struggling to gain customers for its Google Wallet service as another carrier-backed group consisting of AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless are preparing an alternative mobile payment system dubbed Isis.

Mobile users, “culture of real-time information seekers and problem solvers.” | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

Half of all US smartphone users, according to Pew’s data, had used their device in the 30 days prior to the survey to coordinate a gathering. And nearly half had used it to decide whether or not to visit a business like a restaurant. Non-smartphone owners are following this trend to a much lesser degree—only 10% had used their mobile phone during the 30-day period to decide whether or not to visit a business. Other popular smartphone information quests included solving an unexpected problem, looking something up to settle an argument and looking up a sports score. #fp

Facebook buys photo-app maker Lightbox

Facebook buys photo-app maker Lightbox | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

If you thought Facebook was good on mobile photo sharing after it bought Instagram for $1 billion, you’re wrong. Facebook has just acquired Lightbox and it’s another company which specializes in making mobile photo-sharing apps.

Back in the dark old days, there was no Instagram for Android but we were very intrigued by Lightbox because not only did it have photo filters, it provided a visually-pleasing way to store all of your photos for Android devices. It also intelligently tied into your social streams to share and view other people’s photos and the team was also pretty good with HTML5.

Twitter now has 140 million users globally, a rather neat match to go with the 140 character service based on sms message character limits. In the UK, 80 per cent of users are active on mobile which is not surprising. The service emerged mobile first when many other services were struggling to make the leap to phones and portable devices and it’s proven to be a great way to establish a business.

Thailand signs the world’s largest educational tablet distribution deal

Thailand signs the world’s largest educational tablet distribution deal | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

You can argue that tablets can never replace the form and functionality of a real, full-sized laptop, but you can’t argue that tablets are certainly cheaper to distribute if you’re planning to put one in the hands of hundreds of thousands of students in the country. That’s why Thailand has officially inked a deal that would bring an estimated one million tablets to its students ages 6 to 8 nationwide.
The $32.8 million One Tablet PC Per Child campaign (1.02 billion Thai Baht) is the world’s largest education tablet distribution deal to date, and finally became official after members of the Pheu Thai party announced the initiative last summer during election season. In partnership with the Chinese firm, Shenzhen Scope, 400,000 tablet units are expected to ship within the next 90 days with an additional 530,000 units on the way. The latter part of the deal is currently not finalized, but the country’s government hopes to continue working toward one million tablets for its students. If Thailand successfully pens the deal for the second shipment, the venture budget will come to a whopping $75.7 million sum for the entire program

Ringmark, rng.io

Ringmark, rng.io | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

Ringmark is a web-based test suite that measures how well a mobile browser supports the capabilities that modern mobile web apps require. Ringmark is an opinionated test suite and the tests are based upon the specifications identified and prioritized by its authors as being important for modern mobile applications. The specifications are arranged into groups of features called 'rings', and the higher the ring, the more challenging the tests within it.

How do people use Ringmark?
Ringmark functions as a standard benchmark test, measuring a mobile browser’s performance in each category to identify within which rings the browser’s features fall. By providing a broadly-accepted, standards-based measurement of mobile web app performance, Ringmark encourages improvements in mobile web browsers so they can support the mobile web app experiences that modern developers want to build.

By reducing fragmentation in mobile browsers, operators can identify and choose phones that offer a consistent, rich mobile web experience across their portfolio. And by providing insight into what functionality each phone and mobile browser offers, developers can easily understand what reach their apps will have based on the features the apps depend upon.

Online Marketing Campaigns Must Consider The Growing Tablet And Smartphone Market | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

Forrester Research recently reported Mobile Commerce sales to be $10 billion in 2012 and predicted $31 billion by 2016, by which time Forrester says it will account for 7% of Ecommerce sales.Twigg says “Goldman Sachs recently predicted ecommerce sales will hit $1 trillion by next year. The snowball effect of this non desktop growth is going to have some big casualties as there are some very sophisticated platforms built only for non hand helds that require substantial reworking to be hand held friendly. Equally there are some businesses who's monetization strategy does not transfer easily onto mobile devices for example.”

Tablets Take Flight

Tablets Take Flight | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

The data shows that travelers are increasingly abandoning simple, audio-oriented activities in favor of devices with LCD screens that allow for surfing the web, watching movies, listening to music and reading books. Over the past two years, audio usage fell from 9.1% of passengers on commercial flights to 5.2%.

Tablets, in particular, account for a growing share of the multi-use devices travelers are adopting. The survey noted that 8.4% of airline passengers were observed using a tablet at some point during their flight, compared to 5.9% of Amtrak passengers and 3.7% of travelers on curbside bus companies like BoltBus and MegaBus.

Coming soon: Chrome for iPhone & iPad | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

Google’s Chrome browser is assumed to be coming for Apple’s iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices by at least one analyst group. On Tuesday, Macquarie (USA) Equities Research released a lengthy note explaining what this would mean for both companies, suggesting it could reduce the amount of money Google pays to Apple for the use of Google searches in the native iOS Safari browser. Given the growth of iOS devices sales and usage, the reduction in such payments could be meaningful says Macquarie, if users transition from Safari to Chrome on iOS.

Apple Drops 4G Branding From New iPad

Apple Drops 4G Branding From New iPad | Floqr Mobile News | Scoop.it

Apple is changing the way it's marketing the iPad + 4G, dropping the 4G altogether and replacing it with the world "cellular."

The move comes after complaints from an Australian competition regulator. While Apple was marketing the tablet as “4G” in the country, it currently cannot connect to Australia’s 4G network or the 4G networks in other countries outside of North America. Due to that fact, regulators felt Apple was misleading Australian customers about the device’s possible data speeds.
